Two hundred and ninety three (293) stool samples from school children were examined in selected schools across the Local Government Area. 22 of 293 children were infected with parasites which include: Ascaris lumbricoides, Entamoeba histolytica, Hookworm, Strongyloides stercularis and Taenia spp. Hookworm had the highest prevalence rate of 9(3.1%), Entamoeba histolytica 7(2.3%), Taenia spp had 3(1.0%), Strongyloide stercolaris had 2(0.7%) while Ascaris lumbricoides recorded the least prevalence rate of 1(0.3%). -

3 The Future of the Nation-State Project in Africa: The Case of Nigeria Nduba Echezona As the Cold War cycle played itself out, some of the multinational nation-states which had been taken for granted such as the former Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia suddenly dissolved. Their splitting pointed towards a direction which had hitherto been a trend in world politics, namely that the nation’s territory had to be synonymous with the territory of the state, the nation being made up of people with shared cultures and myths of blood ties. This direction in Europe might have set a worldwide pace. Africa has shown very little sign of complying with it. Africa entered the post-Cold War era with seemingly high prospects of terri- torial disintegration. This was exemplified by many civil wars in recent years, some with genocidal features. But, except for Eritrea and, to a lesser extent Somaliland, the political map of Africa’s states and borders has remained remarkably unchanged. Wars in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo have not caused these states to split. Nonetheless, wars have led to spatial recompositions, to emerging spaces of sovereignty within state territories and to renewed challenges to the official geography from above — the latter being defined by: the various corporations that have or have had the political or technocratic vocation of establishing, defending or modifying foreign or internal (administrative) borders of established states and organizing their geographical space (regular armies, diplomatic corps, colonial or contemporary administrators) (Ben Arrous 1996:17). 3.Chap.3_2.pmd 79 10/06/2009, 11:10 80 African Studies in Geography from Below In Nigeria, the colonial and postcolonial efforts to construct a nation-state from above rather than from below produced an ‘uncertain’ Nigerian; somebody with equivocal national feelings and many other allegiances. -

It also poses potential threat to the physical infrastructure. The objectives of this study were to, map out gully sites in Katsina-Ala Town using GIS techniques, assess the relationship between gully parameters and their effects on infrastructure in Katsina- Ala Town, evaluate the effects of gully erosion on infrastructure in Katsina-Ala town and suggest appropriate recommendations for measures of control. Data were collected using primary and secondary sources, analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics, Findings from the study revealed that: a strong correlation exists between gully width and damages on physical infrastructure, weak correlation between depth of gullies and damages to infrastructure and moderate correlation between gully length and physical infrastructure damage in the study area; gully erosion has affected or has potential effects on 67 buildings, 10 pipelines, 25 electric poles 47 streets and 21 culverts. The study recommends preventive measures to avert the adverse effects of gully erosion on infrastructural facilities in Katsina-Ala town. 1. Operation Rainbow was created by Plateau State Government which includes civilians to address the perceived harassment by the Federal Government Joint Security Task Force in Plateau State to coil the lingering crises that engulfed the State most especially Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas. The result shows that resource rivalry, power politics are factors that promote conflict in Plateau state as people struggle for power; there is collaboration between the Operation Rainbow and other security agencies to tackle the crises which leads to significant Peace-building. This study concludes that the lack of sincere conflict resolution efforts in Jos resulted in the transformation of a once-localized confrontation between political elites of different ethnic groups into a protracted communal conflict with a strong religious dimension. The study recommended that there is need to address Constitutional Reforms to political structure in the country. 1. The Involvement of Tiv Diaspora in Peacebuilding in Nigeria
E-journal promoted by the Campus for Peace, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya http://journal-of-conflictology.uoc.edu ARTICLE Looking Beyond Conflict: The Involvement of Tiv Diaspora in Peacebuilding in Nigeria Terhemba Ambe-Uva Submitted: December 2010 Accepted: March 2011 Published: May 2011 Abstract Examining the role of transnational migrant groups in peace processes is a particular area of field research within the broad area of studies on migration. This article examines the contribution of diaspora of the Tiv ethnic group in the USA to peacebuilding in Nigeria and argues that, contrary to recent findings in the literature that African diaspora had a negative impact on peace processes, the Tiv diaspora actively engaged all the conflicting parties in an attempt to ensure sustained peace and wider democratisation of power. They were mobilised as a result of the military massacre of two hundred unarmed Tiv civilians in their homeland. The initially weak ties of the Tiv diaspora with their home country have been strengthened, with the propensity to actively participate there. Despite their track record in peace processes, a weak social, economic and political position, as well as capacity constraints, may frustrate their efforts towards an enduring and sustainable peace. Security Threat Assessment for South West Executive Summary Political Context The merger between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and other smaller parties, has provided an opportunity for opposition parties to align and challenge the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This however will also provide the backdrop for a keenly contested election in 2015. The zoning arrangement for the presidency is also a key issue that will define the face of the 2015 elections and possible security consequences. Across the six geopolitical zones, other factors will define the elections. These include the persisting state of insecurity from the insurgency and activities of militants and vigilante groups, the high stakes of election as a result of the availability of derivation revenues, the ethnic heterogeneity that makes elite consensus more difficult to attain, as well as the difficult environmental terrain that makes policing of elections a herculean task. Preparations for the Elections The political temperature across the country is heating up in preparation for the 2015 elections. While some state governors are up for re-election, most others are serving out their second terms. The implication is that most of the states are open for grab by either of the major parties and will therefore make the electoral contest fiercer in 2015 both within the political parties and in the general election. -

Solidarity match to commemorate World Refugee Day 2021 by UNHCR, refugees, government officials and host communities in Ogoja, Cross River State. © UNHCR /Lucy Agiende. www.unhcr.org 1 CAMEROON REFUGEE OPERATIONAL UPDATE JUNE 2021 Operational Highlights ■ On 20 June, UNHCR, government authorities, refugees, host communities and partners came together to commemorate the World Refugee Day (WRD) and celebrate the courage/resilience of refugees in Nigeria. A week-long commemoration was undertaken with several activities including solidarity walk, cultural displays, musical performances, friendly soccer games by adults and children, fashion parade, livelihood exhibitions, COVID-19 vaccination, essay/debate competitions and exhibitions of handcraft/technological inventions in Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River and Taraba States. PROTECTION Protection Monitoring ■ UNHCR collaborated with twelve government agencies, national and international partners to systematically identify protection incidents, analyse the protection risk and refer cases to partners providing protection and multisectoral assistance, including legal assistance, registration/documentation, advocacy, capacity building, awareness sessions, services related to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and material assistance. ■ In Benue, Cross River and Taraba (BCT) States, UNHCR and partners undertook at least 30 Joint border monitoring visits, to assess the presence and needs of new arrivals, advocate for the protection of refugees and ensure that refugees have access to territory. -

The Significance of the Immunity Clause for Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies: AJCJS, Vol.6, #s1 &2 November 2012 ISSN 1554-3897 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE IMMUNITY CLAUSE FOR DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION IN NIGERIA Olaoye, Ebenezer Olugbenga (Ph.D.), Department of Political Science, Ekiti State University, Nigeria Abstract This paper interrogates the relevance of the constitutional provisions on immunity for certain categories of elected political-office holders to the quest for democratic consolidation in Nigeria. It traces the history of immunity for political office-holders to the 1963 Republican Constitution and examines the rationale or justification for its inclusion in Nigerian constitutions. On the strength of evidences from case studies from Nigeria’s Second (1979 to 1983) and Fourth Republic (1999 till present), the paper notes that, while the original intention for its inclusion in the Nigerian constitution was good, politicians have used the clause to the detriment of democracy. For this reason, the constitutional provisions on immunity have become a threat to the consolidation of Nigeria’s nascent democracy. Rather than throw away the baby with the birth-water, the paper recommends a review of the provisions to take cognizance of the need for transparency, accountability and good governance while ensuring that political chief executives are not unduly constrained in the performance of their constitutional duties. In this way, the paper concludes, the excesses of elected political chief executives can be curbed while Nigerians can reasonably expect to reap more dividends of democracy now and in the future. Introduction: The Concept of Immunity The concept of ‘immunity’ originated from a Latin word ‘immunitas’ which the ancient Romans used in describing the exemption of an individual from service or duty to the State (Silverstein, 1999:19).
