Blankinship, Advisory Chair, Department of Religion Prof. Vasiliki Limberis, Department of Religion Prof. Terry Rey, Department of Religion Prof. Zameer Hasan, External Member, TU Department of Physics © Copyright 2013 by Fatih Harpci All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Much has been written about Qur’ānic references to Jesus (‘Īsā in Arabic), yet no work has been done on the structure or formal analysis of the numerous references to ‘Īsā in the Hadīth, that is, the collection of writings that report the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. In effect, non-Muslims and Muslim scholars neglect the full range of Prophet Muhammad’s statements about Jesus that are in the Hadīth. The dissertation’s main thesis is that an examination of the Hadīths’ reports of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward ‘Īsā will lead to fuller understandings about Jesus-‘Īsā among Muslims and propose to non-Muslims new insights into Christian tradition about Jesus. In the latter process, non-Muslims will be encouraged to re-examine past hostile views concerning Muhammad and his words about Jesus. A minor thesis is that Western readers in particular, whether or not they are Christians, will be aided to understand Islamic beliefs about ‘Īsā, prophethood, and eschatology more fully. In the course of the dissertation, Hadīth studies will be enhanced by a full presentation of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward Jesus-‘Īsā. -
Mary in Early Christianity and Islam
Religious Inquiries Volume 6, Number 11, June 2017, pp. 37-49 Mary in Early Christianity and Islam Morteza Rezazadeh 1 Received: 09-01-2017 / Accepted: 29-06-2017 This article explores the life and importance of Mary in Islam and Christianity, aiming at clarifying the criteria for which Mary has been revered in each tradition. It will be shown that Mary in Christianity is almost merely important because she was the mother of Jesus, while the Muslim reverence for her is based on her own noble characteristics. From the Muslim perspective, even if Mary had not been Jesus’ mother, she would have been a prominent figure and a great example for believers. Keywords: Mary, Jesus, Christian-Muslim dialogue. Introduction As a highly respected figure in both Islamic and Christian traditions, Mary can be a source for reconciliation and can open doors for a more accurate knowledge about her as the mother of Jesus Christ, as well as understanding the position of women in the two traditions. She is also the Founder and instructor of Nourish Your Soul, a platform for Islamic education. 3 | Repentance in Islam: The Interdependence of Spirituality & Practice Abstract While the general notion of repentance may be familiar to most, the Islamic concept of repentance is far less familiar and is often the subject of misconceptions and doubt. Repentance plays a central role in Islam and is comprehensive in nature. Deeply rooted within the belief system, it manifests in multiple dimensions—as the core of Islamic theology (aqeedah), as a subject of jurisprudence or rulings (fiqh), and ultimately in practice as an act of worship (‘ibadah). Equally important are the spiritual and self-purification (tazkiyah) aspects of repentance which reside in the heart. This paper specifically addresses how to repent, with a focus on two key dimensions of repentance (tawba)—the spiritual and the practical. It describes the necessary steps to tawba, its many benefits, and a number of commonly faced obstacles. The paper discusses the symbiotic relationship between the spiritual and practical components. It further emphasizes the holistic nature and distinct features of tawba as a source of optimism for every sinner and believer alike, and as a way of life, necessary for success in this world and in the Hereafter. Introduction In order to appreciate the central role of tawba (repentance in Islam) and its powerful impact on society as a whole, we need look no further than the who personified Islam ﷺ methodology and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad was guided ﷺ to a level of excellence we strive to emulate. -

Gabriel Said Reynolds Notre Dame University [email protected] Abstract According to most classical Muslim commentators the Quran teaches that Jesus did not die. On the day of the crucifixion another person – whether his disciple or his betrayer – was miraculously transformed and assumed the appearance of Jesus. He was taken away, crucified, and killed, while Jesus was assumed body and soul into heaven. Most critical scholars accept that this is indeed the Quran’s teaching, even if the Quran states explicitly only that the Jews did not kill Jesus. In the present paper I con- tend that the Quran rather accepts that Jesus died, and indeed alludes to his role as a witness against his murderers in the apocalypse. The paper begins with an analysis of the Quran’s references to the death of Jesus, continues with a description of classical Muslim exegesis of those references, and concludes with a presentation of the Quran’s conversation with Jewish and Christian tradition on the matter of Jesus’ death. In Richard Burton’s account of his covert pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, he describes visiting the devotional area outside the chamber (hujra, by tradition ˙ the room of Muhammad’s beloved wife ʿĀ’isha) of the Prophet’s mosque. ˙ The chamber itself, Burton discovered, was kept out of view by an ornate cur- tain. Still he reports that on the other side of the curtain were arranged the tombs of Muhammad, Abū Bakr, and ʿUmar. -

A prefatory comment: Too often, in my experience, Muslim-Christian dialogue, motivated by a praiseworthy and entirely understandable desire to minimize violence and destructive prejudice, tends to emphasize whatever the two religions share in common. Interfaith gatherings motivated by such concerns sometimes neglect points of substantive difference between the faiths, especially with regard to Islamic and Christian understandings of Jesus. This is regrettable, and certainly not the approach I propose to attempt as you and I undertake this course. Instead, while acknowledging certain similarities between Islam and Christianity, and giving attention to the highly important commonalities they share with Judaism (all three faiths, it should be noted, are given a special shared status in Islamic theology as al-adyan al- samawiyah, “the heavenly religions”), I nonetheless will emphasize the radical differences between Islam and Christianity in their understandings of Jesus. I do this for a specific reason. I believe that highlighting only the similarities between these traditions does a disservice to both, whereas a critical yet sympathetic comparison of Islamic and Christian Christologies allows us to appreciate the distinctive spiritual treasures available in each religion. -

December 27 2012 Televised Symposiums – Jordon – Notions – (01) – The Fiqh (Jurisprudence) of Crises Praise be to Allah, the Lord of Creations, and Peace and blessings be upon our prophet Muhammad, the faithful and the honest. Oh, Allah, we know nothing but what You teach us. You are the All- Knower, the Wise. Oh Allah, teach us what is good for us, and benefit us from what You taught us, and increase our knowledge. Show us the righteous things as righteous and help us to do them, and show us the bad things as bad and help us to keep away from them. O Allah our Lord, lead us out from the depths of darkness and illusion, unto the lights of erudition and knowledge, and from the muddy shallows of lusts unto the heavens of Your Vicinity. What should we do amidst this distressful hardship in Syria? Praise be to Allah, The Lord (The One and Only) of the Worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Master, Prophet Muhammad, upon his Family and his Companions. Many people ask about what we should do amidst this distressful hardship in our country (Syria.) There is a special kind of Fiqh which deals with crises. All Muslims should be aware of this Fiqh especially during times of hardship. As long as crisis is a law amongst the Divine laws in the universe, it entails a special Fiqh in the Quran and Sunnah. Thus, it should be followed and applied. 1- We should be solid and strong in crises: Allah the Almighty says: 1 The Fiqh (Jurisprudence) of Crises Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; And niggardly when good touches him;- Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) [Al-Ma’arij, 19-22] The only way to keep yourself solid in crises and protected from having a break down and from forsaking your religion, is to keep offering your prayers in the wide sense of the word; to keep in touch with Allah the Almighty which will ease you and grant you tranquility and happiness. -

THE ISLAMIC WAY OF LIFE To all those who find comfort in Islam Preface This booklet grew out of years of volunteer work by this author in a local prison helping with the Islamic program. It is meant for new Muslims who are yearning to be introduced to their faith without too much scholarly endeavors. It does not intend to be precise nor complete and thorough. Instead, it tries to be light-hearted and inspiring and presents a middle-of-the-road moderate view of Islam that empowers and helps many during difficult times in their lives. Muslims are demanding on themselves and lenient with others. They do not settle for mediocrity. They generate their own inspiration and have reserves to reach deep down into when needed. It is heartwarming to see brothers and sisters change for the better and grow in their lives and in their faith, yearning for self-control and empowerment. Their first steps are wobbly, their pronunciation of the Arabic words are less than perfect, but they just keep on going like deep sea diving. The deeper they reach, the more precious the results are. It’s amazing! The program described here is based on the Qur’an and the tradition of Prophet Muhammad, the Sunna. It is strongly based on the positives that help personal growth. The goal is to shed what we do not like in ourselves and strive to acquire good habits and moral qualities: shedding anger and gaining patience, shedding arrogance and gaining humility, shedding carelessness and gaining compassion for others is a lofty goal; may be ambitious, but worthwhile.
