Haas belongs to a rather exclusive club. Its members are those entrepreneurs in motor racing who can claim to actually making a living at doing something they love. Many aspire to "business" careers in motor racing. Still more love what they are doing. But relatively few make a living at it. Carl Haas is a leader among them. Haas is a 20-year veteran of successful race team management -- a businessman who knows what it takes to "win" in a most demanding business specialty and who does it year after year . at a profit, A German by birth, Carl Haas was an auto enthusiast at an early age. He began racing himself, as an amateur, in 1953. His cars visited race circuits from Nassau to California, and he did well. In 1966 he hung up his goggles and turned full attention to the race car importing business he had founded two years earlier as a part-time enterprise that quickly became a full-time occupation. His business acumen was evident early, in his choices of the right equipment to bring into North America for a growing competitor market, and in the proper method of making that equipment available to his customers. -more- CARL A. HAAS / — 2 He decided in 1961, for instance, that a new competition gearbox developed by a friend, Michael Hewland of England, would have wide application in the competition market here.

3 -,.3-73 ASU Formula Lightning Race Vehicle Report Prepared for Ohio Aerospace Institute by Murray D. Sirkis With assistance from John B. Happ, III and Nicholas Gilbert Abs_a_ This report describes the drive system in the Arizona State University Formula Lightning electric race car when it participated in the 1994 Cleveland Electric Formula Classic on 9 July 1994. In addition, the telemetry system used to monitor the car's performance and plans for improving the car's performance are described. Introduction Calculated performance data obtained from a computer model of the Formula Lightning electric race car with various drive systems played an important role in the selection of the drive system used in the ASU Formula Lightning at the 1994 Cleveland Electric Formula Classic on 9 July 1994. The fundamental design decision was to use a relatively low power, highly efficient, motor-controller system and to compensate for the consequent reduction in top speed and acceleration by significantly increased range at speed through the use of nickel-cadmium batteries. The drive system in the Arizona State University Formula Lightning electric race car when it participated in the 1994 Cleveland Electric Formula Classic on 9 July 1994 comprised twenty- four, series-connected, nominally six volt, nickel-cadmium batteries manufactured by SAFT NIFE Inc., four brushless permanent magnet motors, four controllers, and a single speed gearbox-differential manufactured by Solectria Corporation. Power was transferred from the motors to the gearbox-differential by means of two Gates Poly Chain GTtoothed belts. Student- designed axle shafts were used between the gearbox-differential and the rear wheels.
