Titled Firebrand, and staunchly and openly advocating anarchist communism and free love, the pa- per was instrumental in the development of American anarchism. The paper sys- tematically brought working-class anarchism and social revolution to an English speaking audience for the first time, influencing the direction of anarchism inthe United States for the next twenty years. Understanding the pivotal position of Fire- brand in what is often considered a dormant period in American anarchist history, is necessary to comprehending the evolution of anarchism in the United States. The American anarchist movement thrived in the last part of the 1890s. Firebrand fos- tered the growth of an anarchist movement that incorporated the economic change fought for by the Haymarket anarchists, along with social issues like free love and individual freedom long advocated by individualist anarchists. Published between 1895 and 1897, Firebrand helped reinvigorate the anarchist movement, and intro- duced an important development that remained part of the anarchist movement throughout the twentieth century. By combining the economic and political argu- ments of anarchist communism with the social and cultural ideas of free love, Fire- brand and its contributors consciously developed an anarchism that appealed to both immigrant and native-born Americans. The anarchism discussed and worked out in the pages of Firebrand influenced and perhaps even formed the American an- archism appearing after the turn of the century, which gained popular expression throughout the Progressive Era. -

Each of the three chapters of this dissertation examines one anarchist paper and its coverage of a specific issue. The first chapter focuses on Prison Blossoms, which was started by Alexander Berkman, Carl Nold, and Henry Bauer and written and circulated in the Western Penitentiary of Pennsylvania, and its engagement with Alexander Berkman's attempt to assassinate Henry Clay Frick. The second chapter examines Free Society, a weekly edited primarily by Abraham Isaak, and its contributors' writings on the assassination of President William McKinley by self- described anarchist Leon Czolgosz. Finally, the third chapter focuses on The Demonstrator, specifically its first volume which was edited by James F. Morton Jr. from the intentional community of Home, Washington, and the paper's work in supporting John Turner, the first anarchist targeted for deportation under the Immigration Act of 1903. Drawing upon critical discourse analysis, this dissertation incorporates examination of the context in which these papers were written (particularly the immediate concerns to which the papers' authors responded), the form and generic conventions of the anarchist press, including the approaches of the papers' respective editors, and the arguments advanced by their authors. -

“Anarchy at the Antipodes:” Australian Anarchists and their American Connections Tom Goyens1 Salisbury University, Maryland Australian-US Comparative and Transnational Labour History Conference January 8-9, 2015 The University of Sydney, Australia In the autumn of 1885, an American immigrant from Rhode Island, Frederic Upham, delivered a lecture called “What is Anarchy?” to a gathering of Melbourne freethinkers.2 Also at that time, Melbourne-born David Alfred Andrade subscribes to Liberty, the Boston-based anarchist journal, and becomes a regular correspondent.3 These events would directly lead to the founding of Australia’s first anarchist group in 1886. This club also included the immigrant John William Fleming who in 1907 invited Emma Goldman to Australia, and John Arthur Andrews, born in Bendigo, who broke with the club to become the spokesperson for communist-anarchism. The focus of this paper is the connections between these Australian anarchists and the United States.4 I must, at the outset, briefly state two premises that will serve as my framework. First, while anarchists formed a small contingent within Australian radicalism, they were part of the conversation, just like the now-forgotten single-taxers or Knights of Labor. As the historian Bruce Scates has observed: “studying the losers is a way of opening up a wider field of possibilities, of escaping a view of the past that is often narrow and teleological.”5 Second, anarchists during the 1880s and 1890s rarely operated within a single ideological camp. They cherished principles, but their ideas were often in flux, and they easily engaged in a variety of campaigns and alliances. -

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF SPOONS A Dramatic Poem and THE FUGITIVE ARCHIVE The Creative Writer in the Archive Tracy Elisabeth Gillman This thesis is submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of Newcastle University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics 8th February 2019 ii 2 ABSTRACT This thesis consists of The Disappearance of Spoons, a collection of linked dramatic poems, and The Fugitive Archive, a critical analysis of how a creative writer encounters and investigates significant silences in the local archive. The Disappearance of Spoons explores the experiences of four characters stranded during a national rail strike at Newcastle Central Station in January 1919. The disappearance of a canteen of spoons is at the heart of the work, its title being taken from an observation made at the time by Arthur Ransome in his Russian journals. The characters encounter each other’s differences, attempting, but failing to negotiate the others’ conflicting objectives. Their interactions and intertwining stories concern sacrifice and surrender, the possibilities of revolution, and the liberation of war. The central character Molly and her unspoken heretical dissent forms the hinge of the action. With a mixture of idiomatic and formal expression the characters’ inner worlds and the selves they present to themselves and each other begin to unravel. Although historical research forms some of the creative content, I found that an alternate and more complex iteration of the contribution of women to the cultural and industrial character of Tyneside is often supressed within local archival expressions. Working-class women’s experiences are not prioritised and often misrepresented in the archive despite previous evidence to the contrary.
