K Assistant Professor Aeronautical Engineering SNS College of Technology 9-Jul-19 16AE409 ROCKETS AND MISSILES Prof. NEHRU K, M.Tech., (Ph.D) 1 Air to Air Missiles Are used to engage aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned air vehicles at short- to medium-range. In aircraft such as the Typhoon FGR4, targets are identified using the onboard radar and this data is fed to the weapon by the aircraft’s weapons system. In aircraft such as the Tornado GR4, where ASRAAM missiles are carried for self-defence, targets are identified visually and targeted using the missile’s infra-red seeker. 9-Jul-19 16AE409 ROCKETS AND MISSILES Prof. NEHRU K, M.Tech., (Ph.D) 2 Air to Air Missiles Air-to-Air Missiles are highly agile and travel at speeds in excess of Mach 4, but they are vulnerable to electronic and expendable countermeasures. In a Beyond Visual Range (BVR) engagement, the AMRAAM is launched from a range of 20nm plus and is guided by its own inertial navigation system, while receiving updates via the data link. The first missile to use a sapphire-domed staring array detector, to detect the whole target aircraft. The missile has a fire-and-forget capability, thus the pilot can engage multiple targets with several missiles simultaneously. Sidewinder was a supersonic, IR-guided, short range, air-to-air missile, which homed on the heat signature of the target, and detonated with a laser-proximity fuse. Designed around an air breathing ramjet to boost the weapon away from the launch aircraft and then remain under power until warhead detonation. This gives it the energy to pursue and destroy the fastest and most agile aircraft at range.     MISSILESMISSILESDr Carlo Kopp in the Asia-Pacific oday, offensive missiles are the primary armament of fighter aircraft, with missile types spanning a wide range of specialised niches in range, speed, guidance technique and intended target. With the Pacific Rim and Indian Ocean regions today the fastest growing area globally in buys of evolved third generation combat aircraft, it is inevitable that this will be reflected in the largest and most diverse inventory of weapons in service. At present the established inventories of weapons are in transition, with a wide variety of Tlegacy types in service, largely acquired during the latter Cold War era, and new technology 4th generation missiles are being widely acquired to supplement or replace existing weapons. The two largest players remain the United States and Russia, although indigenous Israeli, French, German, British and Chinese weapons are well established in specific niches. Air to air missiles, while demanding technologically, are nevertheless affordable to develop and fund from a single national defence budget, and they result in greater diversity than seen previously in larger weapons, or combat aircraft designs. Air-to-air missile types are recognised in three distinct categories: highly agile Within Visual Range (WVR) missiles; less agile but longer ranging Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles; and very long range BVR missiles. While the divisions between the latter two categories are less distinct compared against WVR missiles, the longer ranging weapons are often quite unique and usually much larger, to accommodate the required propellant mass. In technological terms, several important developments have been observed over the last decade.

The Rafales are India's first major acquisition of fighter planes in 23 years after the Sukhoi jets were imported from Russia. All the 36 jets will be delivered to India by the end of 2021. 1/6 Rafales Introduced in 2001, the Rafale is a French twin-engine and multirole fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation being produced for both the French Air Force and for carrier-based operations in the French Navy. India has inked a Rs 59,000-crore deal in 2016 to procure 36 Rafale jets from French aerospace major Dassault Aviation after a nearly seven-year exercise to procure 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) for the Indian Air Force did not fructify. The MMRCA deal was stalled due to disagreements over production in India. In comparison to the earlier deal i.e. MMRCA, Rafale has much technological advancement, lower life cycle cost and specifications according to the warfare needs of India. Specification 2/6 Air Supremacy: Equipped with a wide range of weapons, the Rafale is intended to perform air supremacy, interdiction (act of disrupting), aerial reconnaissance (observation to locate an enemy), ground support, in-depth strike, anti-ship strike and nuclear deterrence missions. Wide Range of Weapons: Meteor missile, Scalp cruise missile and MICA weapons system will be the mainstay of the weapons package of the Rafale jets.

La tecnología determina, en gran medida, la forma de los conflictos armados e influye en la capacidad que tienen unas fuerzas armadas para realizar con éxito sus operaciones. Su papel ha sido preponderante, como se ha podido ver durante la guerra del Golfo Pérsico de 1991, el conflicto de Kosovo, o la reciente invasión de Irak –citando ejemplos bien conocidos–, contribuyendo, de forma signifi- cativa, a lograr una rápida finalización de la fase armada con un desgaste militar mínimo. El presente trabajo pretende investigar sobre esta cuestión, po- niendo de relieve la importante relación que existe entre la tecnología y la defensa, subrayando el papel que ejercen algunas tecnologías en la consecución de ciertas misiones, y analizando cómo su presencia multi- plica la capacidad y la eficacia de una fuerza militar. Beside arms build-up, Greece is working hard to expand its alliance network in the Middle East while increasing its anti-Turkish pressure campaign across Europe and the United States. Although this policy has peaked recently, it is not a new phenomenon in the Greek security mindset. Originating from the so-called “Turkish threat”, this twofold effort has become the foundational element of Greek foreign and security strategies since Turkey’s Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974. Recent Greek military modernization and diplomatic activism is a clear demonstration of its decades-old compellence strategy, rather than a deterrence which its official disco- urse claims. If it were a policy of deterrence, it is consistently failing because Greece also claims that the regional status-quo is always changing, against its national interests, in favor of Turkey. Its strong emphasis on deterrence, in fact, belies its real strategy, one that is designed not to deter Turkey by dissuading it from taking a specific action but rather force it to renounce something that is already in process. In contemporary geopolitics, contrary to Greek demands, Turkey has been conducting seismic research, in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean Seas, under the protection of its navy and air force. Against this backdrop, Greece wants to boost its offensive capabilities, expand the num- ber of its allies, and ensure an international embargo on Turkey to force the latter to back down from its vital interests in the region.

He obtained his BA degree in Communications at Maryland in 1967, and began working in the local public schools as a science teacher. At the time of his death, in October 1992, he was a high school teacher and a freelance writer/lecturer on spaceflight. Desind also was an avid model rocketeer, specializing in using the Estes Cineroc, a model rocket with an 8mm movie camera mounted in the nose. To many members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), he was known as “Mr. Cineroc.” His extensive requests worldwide for information and photographs of rocketry programs even led to a visit from FBI agents who asked him about the nature of his activities. Mr. Desind used the collection to support his writings in NAR publications, and his building scale model rockets for NAR competitions. Desind also used the material in the classroom, and in promoting model rocket clubs to foster an interest in spaceflight among his students. Desind entered the NASA Teacher in Space program in 1985, but it is not clear how far along his submission rose in the selection process. He was not a semi-finalist, although he had a strong application.

Today, therefore, I am announcing six emblematic decisions that multiply the power, functionality and effectiveness of Greek weapons.” The six decisions announced by PM Mitsotakis: 1. The Hellenic Air Force will immediately acquires a squadron of 18 Rafale fighter jets that will replace older Mirage 2000 fighters. As the Greek PM said these are fourth generation superior aircraft that “strengthen Greek deterrent power... in combination with the modernized F-16” 2. The Hellenic Navy is launching the process for the procurement of four new multi-role frigates, while at the same time, it will modernize and upgrade four existing MEKO frigates. Mr Mitsotakis left open, what these ships will be, and several countries are looking at the tender for their own shipyards, or design bureaus. The new ships will also be accompanied by four MH-60R (Romeo) naval helicopters. 3. The arsenal of the three branches is being enriched as a whole.
