Earthquake Situation Report #6, 18 M ay 2008, W HO

1. Background & General situation ñ Nature of the disaster/emergency: A 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked W enchuan County, 159 kilometers northwest of the Sichuan provincial capital city of , at 2:28 p.m., 12 May 2008, Monday. More than 4,432 aftershocks have been recorded (146 aftershocks measuring 4 or higher on the Richter scale) ñ Affected areas: see the below table. ñ Climatic conditions: more rain forecasted. ñ Extent of damage to infrastructure: extensive in Sichuan province

3. Public health situation and needs Priorities identified by the government include: treatment of injured, infectious disease control and response, safe water and food supplies for affected areas.

4. National & international response

1) Government of China ñ Government continues with response (search and rescue, recovery and disposal of bodies) ñ Government officially provides agencies and donors with list of needed items. ñ The central government has allocated 3.41 billion Yuan ($488 million) for relief and recovery

2) M OH China ñ M ay 18th: Announced that MOH has urgently allocated and transferred many medical supplies to Chengdu, such as vaccine, X-ray machine, and 7 categories of medicine worth 500 thousand Yuan. Especially 100 dialysis machines will arrive at Chengdu today. 11 categories of medicine worth 5 million Yuan and 12 kinds of medical equipment will also arrive today. 350 tons of disinfection and sterilization medical equipment is also on the way. ñ M ay 18th: Announced that MOH again sent out 320 experts in hospital infection management, ICU management, and renal dialysis to the disaster areas. ñ M ay 18th: Announced that The MOH and the General Logistics Department are trying to air transport medical teams into the inaccessible major disaster areas. They are planning 2 field hospitals, 400 beds, and 300 medical workers.

4) UNCT / UNDM T China ñ Convened a meeting to prepare an application form for CERF

W HO response in China ñ W HO Country office (in coordination with UNRC/UNDMT) preparing application for CERF funds (to be submitted Monday) with support of W PRO and HQ ñ W HO Country office coordinating with UNFPA and UNICEF to respond to the items in the list of emergency medical & health supplies/equipments developed by MOH (an initial estimated total cost is around USD 2.0-2.5 million). ñ W HO Country office monitoring situation with support of W HO Regional Office for the W estern Pacific and Headquarters. Sitreps posted on W PRO & HQ sites ñ W HO Country office and W PRO reviewing request of government for emergency health supplies/equipment needed in the affected areas. HQ prepared to provide resource mobilization, procurement and logistics support as needed ñ EHA focal point continues to provide technical advice and materials to China CDC. ñ W R-China is coordinating with UNDMT China to plan for a collective humanitarian response.
