Paryushan Program Outline August 22nd through 29th 2014 are characterized by both internal and external celebrations. The internal celebration is through praying and expressing devotion to Jinas, practicing meditation, spiritual studies, and renunciation.

Paryushan and Das Lakshana are an important festival among the Jain festivals. It happens during late August / September commencing on the twelth day of the fortnight of the waning moon cycle and ending in the fourteenth of the fortnight of the waxing moon cycle. This is generally a rainy season in Northern parts of . During this 18 day period, Jain scholars and monks visit temples and explain the . Jains during this period practice external austerities such as fasting, limiting their normal activities, long distance travel etc. At the conclusion of the festivities, a lookback is encouraged, and Pratikraman is done for repentance of faults and is given and asked for from all living beings.

We will be honored to have Jain Scholar Shri Champakbhai Mehta for the Paryushan as our dignitary and Dr. Rameshbhai Parekh for the Daslakshana. Our local scholar Shri Harshadbhai Maniar will conduct English lectures in the evening using Power Point presentations. This year subject is ‘Aagam scriptures - the preaching and doctrines of the Lord ’.

We look forward to having these renowned Jain scholars and learning more about during Paryushan.

Shri Champaklal Pranjivan Mehta Education in Jain Philosophy : Studied for 4.1/2 yrs at Shrimad Yashovijayji Jain Pathshala, Mehsana, , India. A foremost institution, imparting education in Jain Philosophy and Rituals, for last 115 yrs. creating no of scholars who later on opted for monkhood and became . Here is a quick highlight of some of the activities Shri Champak bhai is actively involved in: a) Teaching Jain Philosophy, Scriptures and in many Pathshalas and Sanghs in Mumbai for last 35 yrs. Presently, principal at Jawaharnagar Jain Sangh Pathshala where appx. 700 students are learning jain sutras and philosophy. b) Assisting in Publication of Book on Jainism: 'Shripal Raas' an illustrated book on jain philosophy c) Assisting in reasarch works on Jainism: 'Shrimad Devchand Chovishi' Both the above works are published by Harshadray Pvt. Ltd. Mumbai, India. d) Conducting discourses during Paryushan Mahaparva: For last 35 yrs at various places some of which were at Mumbai, Kolkatta, Cochin, Calicut, Chennai in India and Mombasa - Kenya, Africa. e) Setting of examination papers & checking the papers: For last 35 years ' Shree Jain Dharmik Shikshan Sangh', Shree Jain Education Board & Shree Jain Dharmik Shikshan Society, Mumbai, 'Shrimad Yashovijayji Jain Sanskrit Pathshala, Mehasana, and Shree Jain Tatvagyan Vidyapith, Pune. f) Organising educational shibirs and camps: At 'Shree Vardhman Jain Boarding and Vidyalaya, Katariaji, Shree Cochin Jain Sangh,Cochin, and Shree Gajabhishek Jain Tirth, Saputara.

Participation in Paryusan Bhavna-Bhakti

Paryushan Bhavna Bhakti will be conducted by community local talents. Participants in Bhavna Bhakti are divided in 7 different groups. Each group leader will contact participants for Stavan practice and time schedule.

Dr. Rameshbhai Parekh He is a renowned scholar of Jainism who can speak proficiently in English, Hindi and Gujarati. Dr. Rameshbhai Parekh is an ophthalmologist who practiced for over 30 years in Palanpur and Surat, Gujarat. Ten years ago, he retired so he could completely devote his time to the study of Jainism. He has studied in depth Panch Param Aagam (which includes Shri Samaysar, Pravachansar, Niyamsar, Ashtapahud, and Panchastikay) as well as Yogsar, Parmatmaprakash, Ishtopadesh, Purusharthsiddhiupay and Samadhitantra.

Temple and Puja Etiquette  Please enter the Gabhara in Puja Clothes only.  No food or drinks allowed in temple.  No ladies purse or leather items in temple.  Please refrain from smoking in and around JCSC complex.  Remove your shoes and place shoes in shoe racks only before entering temple.  Do not chew gums, tobacco, mukhvaas etc in temple.  No shorts in temple, no black clothes during major religious events, please wear appropriate clothing.  Please observe silence at all times in the temple area.  All electronic devices should be turned off or put on vibrate mode in temple and during puja, pujan, pratikraman, Swadhyay, lectures or any other group activities.  Please do not offer any plastic flowers for aangi or pusp-puja.  Silver flowers offered to idols are to be collected before Jal-puja and keep in the separate basket which will be taken care of by JCSC-do not trash it.  Refrain yourself for doing any Angpuja, like vakshep-jal-kesar or pushp puja-which is non-ritual, lengthy, and not approved by JCSC.  Please observe temple hours and all other rituals timings.
