The Energy-Pack APU-Replacement for Catenary Free Operation of Overhead Wired Buses Vinzenz V. Haerri, Senior Member IEEE, Manuel Neumaier, Member IEEE, Philippe Schwartz Competence Center IIEE (Integral, Intelligent & Efficient Energy Systems) Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts Technikumstrasse 21, 6048 Horw, Switzerland [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract—The so called Energy-Pack (EP) is a storage based replacement unit for traditional emergency auxiliary power units for overhead wired buses or trolleybuses. Besides the replacement, other important functions such as normal catenary free operation are possible. The design, realization, testing and pilot run in Switzerland are presented in this paper. The previous work of several other projects and investigations are first summarized and consist of concepts for the additional use of supercapacitors, the multifunctional use of the EP and simulations for understanding the significance for the supply quality of the EP’s use for several buses on the same line and at the same time. Secondly, the specification and realization of the EP are commented on. Finally, the results, testing procedure, commissioning and pilot run of a bus operator in Switzerland are described, followed by conclusions of this extensive and for future transport application very important project. • Press Release HESS Receives Electric Bus Order from Winterthur
Press release HESS/06.04.2021/MIB HESS receives electric bus order from Winterthur The Swiss bus constructor HESS wins the international tender and framework agreement to supply a fleet of electric buses to Stadtbus Winterthur (Switzerland). The mandate is for the supply of up to 70 “lighTram®“ vehicles. The 24.7 m long buses from HESS are already in operation in Geneva, Lausanne, Berne, Lucerne, Zurich and St. Gallen and will now be deployed in Winterthur. Lines 5 and 7 in Winterthur are switching from diesel buses to electric buses. The tender has a total value of around CHF 110 million. With their attractive design, spacious standing areas and ergonomic driver’s area, HESS vehicles bring a new dimension to tyre-based passenger transport. The innovative energy management gives the vehicles a lighter construction. As a result, they can transport more passengers than normal electric buses. They also consume less energy than comparable vehicles. During their journeys, the vehicles are charged via the “dynamic charging” principle on specific sections of the line. HESS started in 1940 by constructing the first electrically driven buses and is today one of the world’s leading electric bus companies. Today, hundreds of thousands of passengers are trans- ported in HESS electric buses every day. Comment: Click here to see the corresponding press release from Stadtbus Winterthur. The bid was accepted subject to a 10-day objection period. Image Image caption: visualisation of a double-articulated trolley bus from Stadtbus Winterthur Source: Stadtbus Winterthur HESS: Over 500 motivated and highly-trained employees in the HESS Group, thousands of vehicles in operation on five continents and in every kind of operating environment: the name HESS has be- come synonymous around the world with a passion for vehicle construction, efficient and reliable mobility, development and progress, and innovation and creativity.

  • Vorlage Mit Zirkulation
Press release HESS/18.05.2021/MIB HESS wins contract from Basel for electric buses After winning contracts from Brisbane, Winterthur and Zurich, Swiss bus manufacturer HESS has also won part of the international call for tenders for electric buses for BVB (Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe). The number 50 bus service in Basel, which runs from the main SBB station to the EuroAirport has experienced a constant increase in passenger numbers and in recent years has clearly reached the limit of its capacity. The response to the increase in demand has been to increase the fre- quency of services. However, further increases in service frequency are no longer possible, be- cause otherwise there is a risk that the buses will start to hinder each other. The solution to the problem came from the HESS family of electric buses: lighTram® 25OPP. With a length of 25 me- tres, about six metres longer than the previous diesel buses, they provide more space for passen- gers and luggage as well as generous areas for pushchairs or passengers with reduced mobility. The fleet of eight vehicles ordered for the airport service can still grow later for use on other BVB routes with strong demand. Alex Naef, CEO of Carosserie HESS AG is delighted: “We are happy and proud that HESS, along with its buses and services, have been selected and allowed to contribute to the success of the Ba- sel bus system in 2027. With our experience and geographical proximity, we will be able to opti- mally support BVB over the lifetime of the buses in its further development as an attractive and sustainable public transport undertaking.” With its attractive design, spacious standing areas by all doors and ergonomic driver’s seats, the lighTram® family of electric buses from HESS brings a new dimension to tyre-based passenger transport.
