The Energy-Pack APU-Replacement for Catenary Free Operation of Overhead Wired Buses
The Energy-Pack APU-Replacement for Catenary Free Operation of Overhead Wired Buses Vinzenz V. Haerri, Senior Member IEEE, Manuel Neumaier, Member IEEE, Philippe Schwartz Competence Center IIEE (Integral, Intelligent & Efficient Energy Systems) Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts Technikumstrasse 21, 6048 Horw, Switzerland [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract—The so called Energy-Pack (EP) is a storage based replacement unit for traditional emergency auxiliary power units for overhead wired buses or trolleybuses. Besides the replacement, other important functions such as normal catenary free operation are possible. The design, realization, testing and pilot run in Switzerland are presented in this paper. The previous work of several other projects and investigations are first summarized and consist of concepts for the additional use of supercapacitors, the multifunctional use of the EP and simulations for understanding the significance for the supply quality of the EP’s use for several buses on the same line and at the same time. Secondly, the specification and realization of the EP are commented on. Finally, the results, testing procedure, commissioning and pilot run of a bus operator in Switzerland are described, followed by conclusions of this extensive and for future transport application very important project. Press Release HESS Receives Electric Bus Order from Winterthur
Press release HESS/06.04.2021/MIB HESS receives electric bus order from Winterthur The Swiss bus constructor HESS wins the international tender and framework agreement to supply a fleet of electric buses to Stadtbus Winterthur (Switzerland). The mandate is for the supply of up to 70 “lighTram®“ vehicles. The 24.7 m long buses from HESS are already in operation in Geneva, Lausanne, Berne, Lucerne, Zurich and St. Gallen and will now be deployed in Winterthur. Lines 5 and 7 in Winterthur are switching from diesel buses to electric buses. The tender has a total value of around CHF 110 million. With their attractive design, spacious standing areas and ergonomic driver’s area, HESS vehicles bring a new dimension to tyre-based passenger transport. The innovative energy management gives the vehicles a lighter construction. As a result, they can transport more passengers than normal electric buses. They also consume less energy than comparable vehicles. During their journeys, the vehicles are charged via the “dynamic charging” principle on specific sections of the line. HESS started in 1940 by constructing the first electrically driven buses and is today one of the world’s leading electric bus companies. Today, hundreds of thousands of passengers are trans- ported in HESS electric buses every day. Comment: Click here to see the corresponding press release from Stadtbus Winterthur. The bid was accepted subject to a 10-day objection period. European Train Names: a Historic Outline Christian Weyers
ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively. -

Press release HESS/18.05.2021/MIB HESS wins contract from Basel for electric buses After winning contracts from Brisbane, Winterthur and Zurich, Swiss bus manufacturer HESS has also won part of the international call for tenders for electric buses for BVB (Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe). The number 50 bus service in Basel, which runs from the main SBB station to the EuroAirport has experienced a constant increase in passenger numbers and in recent years has clearly reached the limit of its capacity. The response to the increase in demand has been to increase the fre- quency of services. However, further increases in service frequency are no longer possible, be- cause otherwise there is a risk that the buses will start to hinder each other. The solution to the problem came from the HESS family of electric buses: lighTram® 25OPP. With a length of 25 me- tres, about six metres longer than the previous diesel buses, they provide more space for passen- gers and luggage as well as generous areas for pushchairs or passengers with reduced mobility. The fleet of eight vehicles ordered for the airport service can still grow later for use on other BVB routes with strong demand. Alex Naef, CEO of Carosserie HESS AG is delighted: “We are happy and proud that HESS, along with its buses and services, have been selected and allowed to contribute to the success of the Ba- sel bus system in 2027. With our experience and geographical proximity, we will be able to opti- mally support BVB over the lifetime of the buses in its further development as an attractive and sustainable public transport undertaking.” With its attractive design, spacious standing areas by all doors and ergonomic driver’s seats, the lighTram® family of electric buses from HESS brings a new dimension to tyre-based passenger transport. -

The first five sections are dictionaries of foreign-language terms found in Swiss philately together with their English equivalents – German-English, German-English abbreviations; French-English, Italian-English, and Spanish-English. Thanks go to Christoph Hertsch of Zumstein & Cie for use of excerpts from the German - English - Italian dictionary found in the Zumstein Schweiz Liechtenstein catalog, to the Germany Philatelic Society for use of excerpts from its German / English Philatelic Dictionary, 2005, and to the Philatelic Foundation for use of excerpts from its Philatelic Vocabulary in Five Languages, 1978. The format is alphabetic in the non-English language. The sixth section is a listing of the names of the cantons of Switzerland in each of the four national languages – German, French, Italian, and Romansh. For example, Grisons, Graubünden, Grigioni, and Grischun are all names of the canton in south-east Switzerland. The final section is a listing of Swiss town names that are different in German, French, or Italian. For example, the capital of Canton Valais is Sion in French and Sitten in German. It is hoped the collector with little or no knowledge of a foreign language can, by using these dictionaries, decipher at a minimum the basic catalog listings in the Zumstein catalog. -
Matters of Taste: the Politics of Food and Hunger in Divided Germany 1945-1971
Matters of Taste: The Politics of Food and Hunger in Divided Germany 1945-1971 by Alice Autumn Weinreb A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the University of Michigan 2009 Doctoral Committee: Professor Kathleen M. Canning, Co-Chair Associate Professor Scott D. Spector, Co-Chair Professor Geoff Eley Associate Professor Alaina M. Lemon Acknowledgements The fact that I would become a German historian had never crossed my mind ten years ago – that the past decade has made me one is entirely due to the remarkable number of people who have helped me in ways that even now I cannot fully grasp. Nonetheless, I suppose that these acknowledgements are as good a place as any to start a lifetime's worth of thanking. It all began at Columbia, where Professor Lisa Tiersten suggested that I go abroad, a suggestion that sent me for the first time to Germany. Five years later, when I first considered going to graduate school, she was the person I turned to for advice; her advice, as always, was excellent – and resulted in my becoming a German historian. During my first chaotic and bizarre years in Berlin, Professors Christina von Braun and Renate Brosch went out of their way to help a confused and hapless young American integrate herself into Humboldt University and get a job to pay the admittedly ridiculously low rent of my coal-heated Kreuzberg apartment. Looking back, it still amazes me how their generosity and willingness to help completely transformed my future.
