FOREWORD

This would have been the 25th annual collective auction to be held at Milford farm by Kivells in conjunction with Richard Sandercock. Richard purchased the strategically well placed Milford Farm in 1991 with the intention of opening his steam collection to the public in the first museum buildings and utilising the workshop facilities to relocate his R. Dingle & Sons contracting business from their historical site in Stoke Climsland. The museum evolved into what is now The Fairground Heritage Trust collection and visitor attraction and the workshop was to become a centre of excellence for the repair and rebuilding of steam engines with Clive Gibbard working under Richard’s direction. Clive has recently retired and moved away and Richard has decided the moment is right to close the workshop business and sell the equipment and stores. That raised the question of who would look after his long cherished Conqueror. It is several years since Richard could drive the engine since when his apprentices have displayed it for him and he has made the decision the engine and the associated tackle and the rest of his heritage collection should also be dispersed. There was an early commitment to a few outside lots which has been honoured but this sale is predominately Richard’s sale and has moved away from the collective pattern of earlier years.

VENUE Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre, Milford, Lifton, Devon, PL16 0AT Sale will commence promptly at 10:00am

Commission bids will be handled as though the intending purchaser were present in person and the bid will be one bidding interval above the next highest bid or the reserve price if appropriate. The auctioneers will accept no liability in any respect on a commission bid. A person bidding the same price in the room will take preference to commission bids.

Telephone and Internet Bidding: The site has very poor mobile and broadband signals as a result there will be no internet service. It was later built to a more modern design of 1927 and

705 Burrell 5NHP Road Locomotive Conqueror No. 3996 of 1924 Reg. E9597 This engine was new to Messrs Hentons of Hopwas Tamworth for use in their Threshing and Haulage business. Richard is only the second owner having purchased in 1975 shortly after Mr. Henton’s passing. At that time Richard had the R. Dingle & Sons workshop at Stoke Climsland in full swing and with that resource and the help of Roger Pridham undertook a full rebuild over 5 years. The new firebox was made by Phillips (Shipbuilders) of Dartmouth. Following the rebuild Richard was to rally the engine extensively in the UK and Holland. He was one of the team known as Amalgamated Heavy Haulage with Len Crane and Jim Sarney at Black Country Museum and The Great Steam Fair. A purchaser will be only the third owner of an engine with an impeccable work and preservation provenance. Included will be the Meteor Lamps, parts replaced when Burrell’s alignment was corrected by Clive Gibbard some years ago, also included will be The booklet “Instructions to drivers”, not mint condition having been discovered in the engine tool box post purchase. Original Hentons sheets will provide a purchaser with the stencil pattern used by Hentons. These sheets were not original to Conqueror and bought by Richard at extra cost. The Heavy Haulage canopy boards are included original invoice and specification sheets and copies of the build sheets. Tax disks from 1935 are displayed in a frame and the photo album through from collection to restoration and the early rally days.

712 Charles Burrell & Sons Ltd. Showman’s Engine build number 3910 7NHP “Wait and See” (Entered by the Hunt family) Purchased new by Crowther and Johnson of Leeds who ordered the engine in light yellow and white. Shortly thereafter one of the partners died which led to Burrells repossessing the engine. Pat Collins was looking for a tractor and on visiting Thetford found a better buy in Wait and See. He is said not to have liked the yellow paint and it was not long before the yellow livery was lost to red. The engine was to receive a new firebox from Midland Rolling Works just before being laid aside. It was not re-commissioned by the Hunt family in preservation when the motion was renovated by the workshop at Dingles and the paint returned to the original yellow and white. The boiler of this engine had little work post the Midland rolling Works attention and was dry stored for many years. On return to occasional preservation service the motion work received attention in Dingle’s workshop.
