The museum evolved into what is now The Fairground Heritage Trust collection and visitor attraction and the workshop was to become a centre of excellence for the repair and rebuilding of steam engines with Clive Gibbard working under Richard’s direction. Clive has recently retired and moved away and Richard has decided the moment is right to close the workshop business and sell the equipment and stores. That raised the question of who would look after his long cherished engine Conqueror.

In my early years of attendance, 35mm slides were the only documentation source I used, but when the slides were complemented with recordings of the organs, the pre- sentations were acceptable. Later, with the use of many hours of edited videos, another dimension was added to liven up the presentations—but still it was not like being there. I personally believe the Great Dorset Steam Fair may be considered the “Greatest Show on Earth,” and to attempt to describe in a few written pages with photos, one can only begin to convey the atmosphere and experience of actually attending. Notwithstanding, there seems to be enough interest and curiosity in the U.S. pertaining to “Dorset” to merit an article on the subject. THE STATEMENT OF INTENT This is an agreement between The Steam Fair, Police and the local authorities and sets out the detail of the initiatives to reduce the impact of the Steam Fair on the local community, and to ensure the safety of visitors. It can be viewed at www.dorsetforyou.com FINAL STEAM FAIR ARRANGEMENTS The Steam Fair, Police and Dorset County Council highways have worked on improving traffic movement on the A354 Salisbury Road during the period of the Steam Fair. This includes a 30mph speed limit. To assist traffic flow on the main show days (Wednesday 2 September – Sunday 6 September) CSAS traffic stewards will be deployed at the main car park entrances to direct traffic into the car parks and keep through traffic moving. The Steam Fair’s on-site radio station is capable of reaching a 10 mile radius and will issue regular traffic bulletins regarding the A354 from Saturday 29 August until Sunday 6 September. Tune in to “Steam Fair FM” on 87.9 FM. Efforts have been made to minimise traffic movement along Valley Road with appropriate signage. Due to this road being narrow and unsuitable for extra traffic, signs will be provided warning of “No access to Steam Fair”.
