Digital Concert Hall the Berliner Philharmoniker Live on the Web Digital Concert Hall The Berliner Philharmoniker live on the Web| 2011/2012 programme www.digital-concert-hall.com WELCOME TO THE DIGITAL CONCERT HALL Once again there is a wealth of fantastic concerts in the 2011/2012 Berliner Philharmoniker season – and you can be there to experience them live on the Web. There are over 30 concert broadcasts in excellent HD quality to look forward to, with conductors and soloists who represent a “Who’s Who” of contemporary classical music. The Berliner Philharmoniker continues the Mahler cycle under chief con- ductor Sir Simon Rattle that was begun last season. There are also two highlights with Sir Simon on the programme for opera fans: a concert per- formance of Carmen with Magdalena Kožená and Jonas Kaufmann, and Wagner’s Die Walküre. Murray Perahia, this season’s Pianist in Resi- dence with the Berliner Philharmoniker, is only one of many leading in- strumentalists to be appearing, and he will be joining Simon Rattle to perform Schumann’s Piano Concerto. As well as the live broadcasts, you can access over 100 recordings from the last three years in our ever-growing concert archive. In addi- tion, there are concerts with Claudio Abbado from his time as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, films about the orchestra, documentaries on its education programme, and a host of artist inter- views. Founded in 2009, the Digital Concert Hall is supported exclusively by Deutsche Bank, which has been a sponsor of the Berliner Phil- harmoniker since 1989 and makes the orchestra’s Education Pro- gramme possible. This virtual concert hall remains the only one of its kind in the world, and you are warmly invited to enter it to explore the world of the Berliner Philharmoniker and enjoy great interpreta- tions of timeless music. www.digital-concert-hall.com TICKETS AND PRICES As a visitor to the Digital Concert Hall you can choose between a subscription and tickets of various durations that you can purchase on our site by credit card or PayPal. Bieito’s continued association with the company shows ENO’s commitment to highly theatrical and new interpretations of core repertoire. Following the success of his Carmen at ENO in 2012, described by The Guardian as ‘a cogent, gripping piece of work’, Bieito’s production of Fidelio comes to the London Coliseum after its 2010 premiere in Munich. Working with designer Rebecca Ringst, Bieito presents a vast Escher-like labyrinth set, symbolising the powerfully claustrophobic nature of the opera. Edward Gardner, ENO’s highly acclaimed Music Director, 2013 Olivier Award-nominee and recipient of an OBE for services to music, conducts an outstanding cast led by Stuart Skelton singing Florestan and Emma Bell as Leonore. Since his definitive performance of Peter Grimes at ENO, Skelton is now recognised as one of the finest heldentenors of his generation, appearing at the world’s major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Opéra National de Paris.

Over the generations there have been collaborations with musicians of distinction, among them Leonhard Lechner, the Frobergers, Niccolò Jommelli, Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg, Konradin Kreutzer, of Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Carl Maria von Weber. Berlioz praised the orchestra, when he appeared with it as Der Ring des Nibelungen conductor, and in the 1880s Stuttgart was one of the first to stage the complete Ring cycle, conducted by the then (The Ring of the Nibelung) General Music Director Herman Zumpe, who had assisted Wagner at the first Bayreuth Festival.

  • Berlioz's Les Nuits D'été
Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été - A survey of the discography by Ralph Moore The song cycle Les nuits d'été (Summer Nights) Op. 7 consists of settings by Hector Berlioz of six poems written by his friend Théophile Gautier. Strictly speaking, they do not really constitute a cycle, insofar as they are not linked by any narrative but only loosely connected by their disparate treatment of the themes of love and loss. There is, however, a neat symmetry in their arrangement: two cheerful, optimistic songs looking forward to the future, frame four sombre, introspective songs. Completed in 1841, they were originally for a mezzo-soprano or tenor soloist with a piano accompaniment but having orchestrated "Absence" in 1843 for his lover and future wife, Maria Recio, Berlioz then did the same for the other five in 1856, transposing the second and third songs to lower keys. When this version was published, Berlioz specified different voices for the various songs: mezzo-soprano or tenor for "Villanelle", contralto for "Le spectre de la rose", baritone (or, optionally, contralto or mezzo) for "Sur les lagunes", mezzo or tenor for "Absence", tenor for "Au cimetière", and mezzo or tenor for "L'île inconnue". However, after a long period of neglect, in their resurgence in modern times they have generally become the province of a single singer, usually a mezzo-soprano – although both mezzos and sopranos sometimes tinker with the keys to ensure that the tessitura of individual songs sits in the sweet spot of their voices, and transpositions of every song are now available so that it can be sung in any one of three - or, in the case of “Au cimetière”, four - key options; thus, there is no consistency of keys across the board.
