  • Apple Label Discography
Apple Label Discography 100-800 series (Capitol numbering series) Apple Records was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1968. The Apple label was intended as a vehicle for the Beatles, their individual recordings and the talent they discovered. A great deal of what appeared on Apple was pretty self indulgent and experimental but they did discover a few good singers and groups. James Taylor recorded his first album on the label. Doris Troy recorded a good soul album and there are 2 albums by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The Beatlesque group Badfinger also issued several albums on the label, the best of which was “Straight Up”. Apple Records fell apart in management chaos in 1974 and 1975 and a bitter split between the Beatles over the management of the company. Once the lawyers got involved everybody was suing everybody else over the collapse. The parody of the Beatles rise and the disintegration of Apple is captured hilariously in the satire “All You Need Is Cash: the story of the Rutles”. The Apple label on side 1 is black with a picture of a green apple on it, black printing. The label on side 2 is a picture of ½ an apple. From November 1968 until early 1970 at the bottom of the label was “MFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC. A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES INC. USA”. From Early 1970 to late 1974, at the bottom of the label is “MFD. BY APPLE RECORDS” From late 1974 through 1975, there was a notation under the “MFD.

  • Nizar Qabbani - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Nizar Qabbani - poems - Publication Date: 2004 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Nizar Qabbani(1923 - 1998) Qabbani was revered by generations of Arabs for his sensual and romantic verse. His work was featured not only in his two dozen volumes of poetry and in regular contributions to the Arabic-language newspaper Al Hayat, but in lyrics sung by Lebanese and Syrian vocalists who helped popularize his work. Through a lifetime of writing, Qabbani made women his main theme and inspiration. He earned a reputation for daring with the publication in 1954 of his first volume of verse, "Childhood of a Breast," whose erotic and romantic themes broke from the conservative traditions of Arab literature. The suicide of his sister, who was unwilling to marry a man she did not love, had a profound effect on Qabbani. Thereafter, he expressed resentment of male chauvinism and often wrote from a woman's viewpoint and advocated social freedoms for women. He had lived in London since 1967 but the Syrian capital remained a powerful presence in his poems, most notably in "The Jasmine Scent of Damascus." After the Arab defeat in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, he founded the Nizar Qabbani publishing house in London, and his became a powerful and eloquent voice of lament for Arab causes. Qabbani was a committed Arab nationalist and in recent years his poetry and other writings, including essays and journalism, had become more political. His writing also often fused themes of romantic and political despair. Qabbani's later poems included a strong strain of anti-authoritarianism.

Playlist Sept. 6th 2015 9AM The Beatles - Because - Abbey Road (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John, Paul and George The group recorded 23 takes on August 1, 1969, with George Martin on a Baldwin spinet electric harpsichord matching note with John on his Epiphone Casino electric guitar and Paul on his Rickenbacker bass guitar. For the backing track Ringo kept the beat gently tapping out a beat on the hi-hat. This was for the musician’s headphones and was not recorded on the tape. Take 16 was deemed the best backing track and John, Paul, and George added their lush harmonies to it. On August 4, the three recorded their vocals two more times, adding to the already thick layers of harmony. Lennon was inspired the write the song when he hear Yoko playing Beethoven’s piano sonata in C Sharp minor, opus 27 number two (aka “The Moonlight Sonata”). He asked her to play the chords backwards and wrote “Because” around that reversed chord sequence. The gorgeous three-part harmonies of “Because” are showcased on an a cappella mix of the song on the “Anthology 3” album. John Lennon – Oh My Love (Lennon/Ono) – Imagine ‘71 Also known as “Oh My Lover,” this is the only (Lennon/Ono) composition on the album. • The Mostly Celtic Songbook
The Mostly Celtic Songbook Mostly Celtic Songbook 2 Introduction After sitting in on some of the former Tuesday evening open seisiúns at C.B. Hannegan’s in Los Gatos, and trying to sing along but not remembering the lyrics, it seemed like a good idea to compile a songbook that we could all potentially share. After one or two pints and a few encouraging words from Tony Becker, the idea became a project. So, here it is. In retrospect, it turned out to be more helpful to me than to the group, as most continued to use their own song collections. But at least I got most of the more frequently played songs together in one handy document, in keys that I can actually sing (the “suggested key”). It was well worth the effort, and a great way to learn the songs. In some cases, I took the liberty of editing some of the traditional lyrics for readability and sing-ability, especially the lyrics I got from the Web, and adding or changing a few chords, since many of the songs exist in several different versions anyway. Thanks to YouTube, I was able to correct a lot of mistakes. Some of the songs are still under copyright protection, so if I’ve given a wrong attribution, please send me a note so I can correct the error. A thousand apologies if that is the case. This book is intended for private use only, not for commercial publication. The chords are written in Nashville notation (well, sort of), so transposing is simple.
