DANIEL WOHL / COMPOSER Born and raised in Paris and currently residing in Los Angeles, Daniel Wohl's music blends electronics with acoustic instrumentation to often "surprising and provocative effect" (NPR). He has produced albums, orchestral and chamber works, film, television and ballet scores, and has received critical praise as one of his generation’s "imaginative, skillful creators" (New York Times) making music that is "beautiful...original" (Pitchfork). Recent performances of his music have been held at the Broad Museum, MASS MoCA, the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, The Barbican, Sadler's Wells, the Holland Festival and MoMA PS1. His music has been performed/commissioned by a number of ensembles such as the San Francisco Symphony (Soundbox series), the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (MusicNOW series), the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The London Contemporary Orchestra, New York Youth Symphony, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the American Symphony Orchestra, eighth blackbird, So Percussion, the Calder Quartet, and the Mivos Quartet among others. He has also collaborated on albums/scores/performance projects with Jóhann Jóhannsson, Luca Guadagnino, Patty Jenkins, Morgan Neville, Dee Rees, David Lang, Julia Holter, Laurel Halo, Son Lux, and Holy Other. Recent and upcoming projects include, 8 minutes, a new ballet score for London's Sadler's Wells choreographed by Alexander Whitley - performances with the London Contemporary Orchestra (Kings Place, UK), and Slagwerk den Haag (Rewire, NL) - as well as a new piece for the Minneapolis based band Polica and the S t a r g a z e ensemble commissioned by Symphony Space (NY) and the Cross Linx Festival (Netherlands). He recently held residencies at MASS MoCA (2016) and Yaddo (2017). In 2016 Holographic, Daniel's sophomore album was released on New Amsterdam Records. Commissioned by the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's Liquid Music Series, and the Baryshnikov Arts Center, the music from the album was deemed "aggressive and gorgeous" (NPR) with an electroacoustic blend that was "expertly handled" (Pitchfork). Daniel completed the scores for Berlinale selections Elixir (2015),Veronica (Netflix) (2017) as well as The Color of Time with (James Franco, Jessica Chastain and Mila Kunis). He is also writing the music for television shows "Search Party" (TBS), Robert Zimeckis' Project Blue Book, and They'll love me When i'm Dead a documentary by Morgan Neville for Netflix about Orson Welles. He's also contributed new arrangements of Vangelis' theme for the trailers to Blade Runner 2049. A graduate of the doctoral program at the Yale School of Music, Daniel studied with David Lang, Martin Bresnick, Aaron Kernis and Ingram Marshall. He is a recipient of three ASCAP Young Composers awards, as well as grants from the Barlow Foundation, New Music USA, the Brooklyn Arts Council and the Jerome Foundation. .

Drawing on the common experience of today’s immediate tragedy – the global pandemic -- the 22 artists creating the project are collaborating from locations across the U.S. and Europe using a variety of technologies to coordinate movement, music, and digital design. The new digital Immediate Tragedy, commissioned by The Soraya, will premiere online Friday, June 19 at 4pm (Pacific)/7pm (EST) during Fridays at 4 on The Soraya Facebook page, and Saturday, June 20 at 11:30am/2:30pm at the Martha Matinee on the Graham Company’s YouTube Channel. In its new iteration, Immediate Tragedy will feature 14 dancers and 6 musicians each recorded from the safety of their homes. JULIA HOLTER (USA) «Have You In My Wilderness» (Domino Records, Release: 25.09.2015) „Have You In My Wilderness‟ is Julia Holter‟s most intimate album yet, a collection of radiant ballads. Her follow-up to 2013‟s widely celebrated „Loud City Song‟ explores love, trust, and power in human relationships. While love songs are familiar fodder in pop music, Holter manages to stay fascinatingly oblique and enigmatic on her new album. “This record is pretty haunted, in a way,” Holter says. “There‟s always this lurking feeling that things may not be what they seem.” Holter is well known for weaving literary references into her dreamy, atmospheric music. Her 2011 full- length debut, Tragedy, was based on an ancient Greek play by Euripides; Ekstasis pulled in quotes from Virginia Woolf, Frank O’Hara, and other literary titans; Loud City Song took its inspiration from Gigi, the 1944 French novella by Colette and the whimsical 1958 musical that followed. For Have You in My Wilderness, Holter reached inward for inspiration. “I started writing a bunch of songs from my heart—warm, dark, and raw—with less emphasis on theatrical ideas and without an overall narrative, like I’ve sometimes used in the past,” she says. “All of these songs would come out of me while playing the piano very intuitively and quickly, without any planned concept. Many of the lyrics are stream-of-consciousness and surreal. Sometimes I would be surprised by the imagery that came out. Sometimes it was obvious, because of what I was feeling at the time.

Pitchfork describes Poliça as “digitized Norah Jones atop Radiohead at its most polyrhythmic.” Fold in one of Europe’s hottest ensembles for a sense of this boundary-breaking collaboration. A new work for the ensemble by Daniel Wohl will open the show at MASS MoCA on Thursday, February 15, at 8pm. Emerging from a collaboration between producer Ryan Olson, the mastermind behind the neo-soul collective Gayngs, and vocalist Channy Leaneagh, formerly of folk-rock duo Roma di Luna, the Minneapolis-based synth-pop group Poliça (stylized POLIÇA) formed with the aim of “escaping to a different reality,” says Leaneagh (Rolling Stone). Its debut album Give You the Ghost, written in just two heady weeks, is a doorway to another world of hypnotic crystalline loops and fluidly funky basslines. To complete this psychedelic outfit, the duo tapped Chris Bierden (bass), Drew Christopherson (drums), and Ben Ivascu (drums) to join Leaneagh in the studio and on stage. Less than six months after its live debut, and days after its first album release in February 2012, Poliça was receiving star-studded praise, most notably from Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, who told Rolling Stone, “They’re the best band I’ve ever heard.” When Poliça released its highly anticipated follow-up album a year later, the acclaimed Berlin-based conductor André de Ridder was in the midst of founding Stargaze (stylized s t a r g a z e), a network of multi-talented and classically trained European musicians.

Julia Holter - Ekstasis RVNGNL14 Julia Holter’s second album, a collection of songs written over three years in Los Angeles, documenting an artist’s search for the incomprehensibly beautiful in untraditional pop form Release date: March 8th, 2012 Julia Holter second album, Ekstasis, is a collection of songs written across the span of three years in Los Angeles, California. Holter's songwriting stems from a mythological reverence of that which is incomprehensibly beautiful. Her Eating the Stars EP (2007) was a first attempt at musically transcribing this beauty, while discovering the honest enjoyment of unadulterated creativity. The anonymous authorship and shimmering gold detail of medieval illuminated manuscripts particularly inspired the ornately-orchestrated pop song mystery of Stars. Holter's debut album Tragedy (Leaving Records, 2011) embraced similar strains of shimmer, but used sparser textures in a narrative context. Ekstasis marks a return to the playful searching of Stars, but guided by newly-learned disciplines, slightly better technology, and nearly limitless home recording time. Formative experiences at Cal Arts studying with Michael Pisaro and in India singing with harmonium under guru Pashupati nath Mishra marked a slight detour for Holter in what started as a more traditional composition route. The trajectory leading to the creation of Ekstasis suggests her thirst for knowledge and experience. While Ekstasis reflects the conventions of her classical training, the album is also uncannily, if unknowingly, poppy. Holter's approach to crafting the songs of Ekstasis centered around what she describes as, "open ear decisions: what seemed to sound best for that moment." This blindness to reference unintentionally steers Ekstasis along the experimental pop spectrum most commonly associated to New York's Downtown music micro-universe of the 80s, specifically the works of Laurie Anderson and Arthur Russell.

Quietus Albums Of The Year 2018, In Association With Norman Records Luke Turner , December 5th, 2018 15:19 ‘Best In Show!’ by Lisa Cradduck 2018, in case you missed the memo, marks a decade since The Quietus launched as a digital websheet. As ever, back in January, we probably thought 'what if this is the year that music goes crap?' Thankfully, against a wider climate that just gets ever bleaker, music has rewarded us with the best birthday present it could, for this year's top 100 albums of the year curiously feels like the 'most Quietus' we've ever done. What, exactly, this site is all about remains something of a mystery, even to us after a decade producing it, but that's sort of the point. We're not really fussed by hype and trends or a desperate desire to be focusing on the next hot thing - that sort of thinking is what has got the music media and industry alike into bother again and again. Instead, we focus on the marginal and ignored, the New Weird scenes of the world in a list compiled by the Quietus HQ crew Anna Wood, Christian Eede, Patrick Clarke, John Doran and myself, with help from our various genre columnists. Indeed, it's fair to say that this list is a counterblast to the algorithmic systems of music discovery that increasingly shape our culture, largely to negative effect. When we started The Quietus way back in 2008, that technology was in its infancy and the threat to the leftfield was arguably a conservative media landscape.
