Domínguez) This dissertation is on the life of Francisco de Castilla (c. 1480-c. 1558) and the two works he wrote around the time of Charles I and V of the Holy Roman Empire’s (1500-1558) arrival to Spain in 1517. Castilla’s life has been of interest because of his family’s support of the existence of an unknown Crónica verdadera (c. 1400) on the life of Pedro I (1334-1369) and their connection to the Relación de la vida del Rey D. Pedro y su descendencia que es el linaje de los Castilla, probably written in the sixteenth century. The association between Castilla’s life and probable authorship is further explored here with an added focus on separating facts about him from those of his similarly-named nephew. Teórica de virtudes (1518) and Práctica de las virtudes (1518), the two books written by Castilla, were published several times throughout the sixteenth century and again at the time of the Council of Trent (1545-1563), the beginning of the Counter-Reformation. The majority of the existing scholarship on Castilla’s works has focused on his use of the Latinized motto of Charles V, “Plus Ultra,” examining the relationship of Práctica de las virtudes to Pedro I and deciding whether or not Práctica belongs to the genre of historiography in verse. This study concentrates on Castilla’s understanding of the theological and cardinal virtues, their provenance, their effect on his poetic narratives and their practical applications on Charles V’s reign. Pal.: Alfonso Fernández de Palencia, author of Universal vocabulario en latín y en romance. x Introduction The Theoretical and Practical Virtues in Francisco de Castilla’s Teórica de virtudes (1518) and Práctica de las virtudes (1518) examines the life of Francisco de Castilla (c. 1480-c. 1558) and two separate works he wrote when or just before Charles V (1500-1558) entered Spain as its king.1 His works were first published separately seven months apart. To complicate matters, Teórica is both the name of the book from August 1518 and the title of the longest poem in said book. It is accompanied by Castilla’s commentaries and citations. None of the other works originally published with Teórica (“Tratado de amiçiçia,” “Diálogo entre la Miseria humana y el Consuelo,” and “Inquisición de la felicidad por metáfora”) include commentaries or citations and neither does Práctica. After writing these works, Castilla seems to have focused on his political career and not published again for nearly thirty years. The printing of Castilla’s works coincided with major religious events. He completed Práctica in 1517 and printed it in January 1518, around the same time that Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses would have reached Spain. The next printing of Castilla’s work was in 1546,2 probably after his retirement. This collection was entitled De los tratados de filosofía moral en coplas and featured selections from Teórica along with previously unpublished poems on the Virgin, the saints and God, solidifying Castilla’s Catholic credentials. Its popularity proved greater and a second edition of uncertain year was printed.3 This success might have then 1 Charles V (1500-1558) was still only Charles I when he received Castilla’s gift.     Romanesque architecture is an architectural style of medieval Europe characterized by semi-circular arches. There is no consensus for the beginning date of the Romanesque architecture, with proposals ranging from the 6th to the 10th century. It developed in the 12th century into the Gothic style, marked by pointed arches. Examples of Romanesque architecture can be found across the continent, making it the first pan-European architectural style since Imperial Roman Architecture. The Romanesque style in England is traditionally referred to as Norman architecture. Combining features of ancient Roman and Byzantine buildings and other local traditions, Romanesque architecture is known by its massive quality, thick walls, round arches, sturdy piers, groin vaults, large towers and decorative arcading. Each building has clearly defined forms, frequently of very regular, symmetrical plan; the overall appearance is one of simplicity when compared with the Gothic buildings that were to follow. The style can be identified right across Europe, despite regional characteristics and different materials. Many castles were built during this period, but they are greatly outnumbered by churches. The most significant are the great abbeychurches, many of which are still standing, more or less complete and frequently in use.[1] The enormous quantity of churches built in the Romanesque period was succeeded by the still busier period of Gothic architecture, which partly or entirely rebuilt most Romanesque churches in prosperous areas like England and Portugal. The largest groups of Romanesque survivors are in areas that were less prosperous in subsequent periods, including parts of southern France, northern Spain and rural Italy. Survivals of unfortified Romanesque secular houses and palaces, and the domestic quarters of monasteries are far rarer, but these used and adapted the features found in church buildings, on a domestic scale.

    A CONFERENCE ABOUT THE NEXT SUCCESSION 1 ________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY: The document below is a modern-spelling edition of A Conference about the Next Succession to the Crown of England. The frame story of A Conference is a fictitious conference in Amsterdam in the spring of 1593, fully described in the Preface to Part I. In that fictitious frame story, the principal speakers are two lawyers, the one an expert in the civil law of England, the other an expert in the common law. This frame story in itself makes it clear that the author himself had a legal background. The civil lawyer puts forward his arguments in Part I (or rather, the author of A Conference puts forward his arguments through the mouth of the fictitious civil lawyer). In Part II, it is the turn of the fictitious expert in the common law. The title page promises that ‘a new & perfect arbour or genealogy of the descents of all the Kings and Princes of England from the Conquest unto this day’ can be found at the end of the tract whereby the claims of all the current pretenders to the English crown will be made plain. This ‘arbour’ or genealogy may have been based on the work of Francis Peto (see below, and TNA SP 70/137, ff. 319-21). Unfortunately this promise is not fulfilled. The ‘arbour or genealogy’ does not appear, suggesting that the author of A Conference did not play a role in the book’s publication. A Conference is a well organized and well thought out presentation.

The armour has close parallels with contemporary known material from the central and eastern Mediterranean or other sites, and it is an important find which increases the body of archeological evi- dence about Byzantine presence in Spania. Este artículo presenta una coraza laminar protobizantina hallada en las excavaciones del barrio construido sobre el teatro romano de Cartagena. La coraza tiene estrechos paralelos con materiales contemporáneos del Mediterráneo Central y Oriental u otros lugares, y es un importante hallazgo que incrementa la nómina de evidencias arqueológicas acerca de la presencia bizantina en Spania.
