This very inexpensive collection proved to be a real find. I happen to appreciate the translation. Though there have been more literal and more deeply researched translations since. This works for me because the slightly antiquated translation reflects the time and sensibility of the writer. In this sense the more contemporary translations are anachronistic and ring false. He prefers to write vignettes for his short stories. Each one a very sharp beautifully articulated account of a particular sensibility or human foible in response to some particular circumstance. His linguistic mastery survives translation better than some great Russians. He is truly a universal and timeless observer ... of us. And a deeply satisfying read. "In Exile" "Misery" and "A Nervous Breakdown", which are very good. Overall, I am very pleased.
