A Short History of the Western Rite Vicariate Benjamin Joseph Andersen, B.Phil, M.Div. HE Western Rite Vicariate of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America was founded in 1958 by Metropolitan Antony Bashir (1896–1966) with the Right Reverend Alex- T ander Turner (1906–1971), and the Very Reverend Paul W. S. Schneirla. The Western Rite Vicariate (WRV) oversees parishes and missions within the Archdiocese that worship according to traditional West- ern Christian liturgical forms, derived either from the Latin-speaking Churches of the first millenium, or from certain later (post-schismatic) usages which are not contrary to the Orthodox Faith. The purpose of the WRV, as originally conceived in 1958, is threefold. First, the WRV serves an ecumeni- cal purpose. The ideal of true ecumenism, according to an Orthodox understanding, promotes “all efforts for the reunion of Christendom, without departing from the ancient foundation of our One Orthodox Church.”1 Second, the WRV serves a missionary and evangelistic purpose. There are a great many non-Orthodox Christians who are “attracted by our Orthodox Faith, but could not find a congenial home in the spiritual world of Eastern Christendom.”2 Third, the WRV exists to be witness to Orthodox Christians themselves to the universality of the Or- thodox Catholic Faith – a Faith which is not narrowly Byzantine, Hellenistic, or Slavic (as is sometimes assumed by non-Orthodox and Orthodox alike) but is the fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for all men, in all places, at all times. Contrary to popular belief, the hajj is a high-risk undertaking for both pilgrims and administrators. For the Malay states, the most vexing problem for people from the mid-nineteenth century until the Second World War was the spread of epidemics that resulted from passenger overcrowding on pilgrim ships. This had been a major issue in Europe since the 1860s, when the international community associated the hajj with the outbreak and spread of infectious diseases. Accusations were directed at various parties, including the colonial administration in the Straits Settlements and the British administration in the Malay states. This article focuses on epidemics and overcrowding on pilgrim ships and the resultant pressure on the British, who were concerned that the issue could pose a threat to their political position, especially when the Muslim community in the Malay states had become increasingly exposed to reformist ideas from the Middle East following the First World War. The colonisers covertly used these three aspects not only to gain the hearts of the colonised but, more importantly, to maintain their reputation among other colonial powers. Roy MacLeod, for example, sees the introduction of Western medicine to colonised countries as functioning as both cultural agency and western expansion (MacLeod and Lewis 1988; Chee 1982). -

Praying the “Jesus Prayer” The Jesus Prayer--“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” The Jesus Prayer is a short formulaic prayer esteemed and advocated within the Eastern Orthodox Church: Κύριε Ἰησοῡ Χριστέ, Υἱὲ τοῡ Θεοῡ, ἐλέησόν με ἁμαρτωλόν. It is often repeated continually as a part of personal ascetic practice. Its use is an integral part of the eremitic tradition of prayer known as Hesychasm.1 The prayer is particularly esteemed by the spiritual masters between the fourth and fifteenth centuries of the Eastern Orthodox hesychast tradition and compiled as the Philokalia in the eighteenth century by St. Nikodemos of the Holy Moun- tain and St. Makarios of Corinth.2 The Jesus Prayer is part of the contemplative tradition and it teaches under- standing of the inner or mystical Kingdom of God within each person. The Holy Spirit kindles a perpetual fire that burns in the heart, in a love for all things, which is to share in the energy of God, which is love. (Leviticus 9:24) It is within the Philokalia that the individual learns how to properly navigate the passions and depravity of existence called the world. Hence, praying the Jesus Prayer becomes a prayer of the heart (called Hesychasm) and emerges as love and as the source of all this it truly beautiful and resplendent with divine glory.3 The Eastern Orthodox theology of the Jesus Prayer enunciated in the fourteenth century by St. Gregory Palamas has never been fully ac- cepted by the Roman Catholic Church. However, in the Jesus Prayer there can be seen the Eastern counterpart of the Roman Catholic Rosary, which has developed to hold a similar place in the Christian West.4 The origin of the Jesus Prayer is most likely the Egyptian desert, which was settled by the monastic Desert Fathers in the fifth centu- ry. -

RUSSIAN ORTHODOXY AND WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY IN IMPERIAL RUSSIA* Christine D. Worobec On 8 November 1885, the feast day of Archangel Michael, the Abbess Taisiia had a mystical experience in the midst of a church service dedicated to the tonsuring of sisters at Leushino. The women’s religious community of Leushino had recently been ele vated to the status of a monastery.1 Conducting an all-women’s choir on that special day, the abbess became exhilarated by the beautiful refrain of the Cherubikon hymn, “Let us lay aside all earthly cares,” and envisioned Christ surrounded by angels above the iconostasis. She later wrote, “Something was happening, but what it was I am unable to tell, although I saw and heard every thing. It was not something of this world. From the beginning of the vision, I seemed to fall into ecstatic rapture Tears were stream ing down my face. I realized that everyone was looking at me in astonishment, and even fear....”2 Five years later, a newspaper columnistwitnessedasceneinachurch in the Smolensk village of Egor'-Bunakovo in which a woman began to scream in the midst of the singing of the Cherubikon. Teddy, by J.D. Salinger In A Nutshell J.D. Salinger is an American writer famous for his 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye and the short stories he published in The New Yorker in the 1950s and 60s. Many of Salinger's stories revolve around the infamous Glass family, seven siblings with remarkable intelligence and unique spiritual interests. On the surface, "Teddy" is not a part of the Glass family saga. It tells the story of a precocious ten-year-old genius boy with an interest in and knowledge of Eastern religions that far surpasses his years. While young Teddy McArdle is not explicitly connected to the Glass family, we find an interesting connection when reading "Seymour: an Introduction," a story about Seymour Glass narrated by his brother, Buddy Glass. In this tale, Buddy admits that he himself wrote "Teddy," and that the ten-year-old genius greatly resembles his older brother, Seymour. Fittingly, then, "Teddy" belongs to the Nine Stories, a collection of Salinger's short works, along side a few more obvious Glass family stories, such as "A Perfect Day for Bananafish." While these stories differ in surface subject matter, they all explore similar themes, among them Eastern religious philosophy. "Teddy" in particular reflects Salinger's interest and knowledge in this area, and indeed many see the characters in "Teddy" as pulpits for Salinger's own ideas on the topic. Mysticism and Greek Monasticism By JOHANNES RINNE There is reason to assert that Christian mysticism is as old as Christianity itself. In the Pauline epistles, e.g., there are obvious signs of this fact. The later Christian mysticism has, in a high degree, been inspired by these ele- ments and likewise by various corresponding thoughts in the Johannine writings, which traditionally are interpreted from this angle and which have played a central role especially for the Orthodox Church.' In the light of the above-mentioned circumstances, it seems fully natural that there exists, from the very beginning, a clear connection also between mysticism and Christian monasticism. It has been pointed out by certain authors that the role of mystical visions is of essential and decisive significance also as regards the development from the stage of the hermits of the deserts to that form of life which, in the proper sense of the word, is characterised as monastic. There is, generally speaking, no possibility to understand correctly the intentions and the thoughts of the great pioneers of monasticism, unless one takes into account the mystically visionary factors. To this end it is neces- sary, furthermore, to penetrate in an inner, spiritual way, into the holy sym- bolism of the monastic tradition and into the sacred legends of its history.2 In other words, it is necessary to keep constantly in mind the visionary factor and to remember that the pioneers of monastic life, as a rule, are men of which it may be said that they have their conversation in heaven: on the mystical level of vision they converse with the angels as the representatives of the heavenly world and as those organs, by means of which the principles of monastic life are transmitted and given to the men of mystical visions.' The things mentioned above are not merely history.
