In his tenth World Championship finale in a row, the defending rallycross World Champion missed yet another podium finish by 0.4 seconds. In the overall standings, the Swede still holds second behind compatriot Johan Kristoffersson. In the teams’ classification EKS is third at the half-way stage of the season. Ekström made a flying start around the rollercoaster track in Norway. Despite torrential rain, the Swede coped the best with the slippery track at the wheel of his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro, and led the overall classification after the first day. “I was a little surprised that we were so fast in the wet, but that was quattro weather,” joked Ekström after the final. “In the dry conditions on Sunday, we struggled again to match the pace of the competition. In the final we lost crucial ground right at the start. This was our own mistake and this ultimately cost us the podium finish.” Although Ekström leaves Norway without a trophy, he still scored 23 important points for the overall standings. After six of twelve rounds, the World Champion is eight points behind the leading VW driver Johan Kristoffersson. -

The Role of Electric Motorsport in the Sustainable Mobility Transition Master Thesis – Master Sustainable Business and Innovation Author: Bram Weggemans Student Number: 6942857 Email Address: [email protected] Supervisor: Dr. Matthijs Punt Second Reader: Dr. Toon Meelen Date: 30-06-2021 Course: SBI-Master’s Thesis Word Count: 19940 Abstract Electric vehicles (EVs) are perceived as a viable technology for the replacement of combustion engine vehicles for a transition towards a more sustainable mobility system. Transition theory emphasizes that development of sustainable technologies such as EVs can be achieved within niches, which are protective spaces that shield sustainable technologies from mainstream market selection pressures. An interesting environment that has generally been known for innovative developments with regard to mobility has recently seen an increased usage of EVs. This environment is the motorsport. This paper therefore aims to identify the role that the electric motorsport as niche plays in the development of EVs for a transition towards a more sustainable mobility system. In order to fulfil this aim, a qualitative research approach was used where both semi-structured interviews and grey literature was analysed. The electrification of certain categories of the FIA World Rallycross Championship as well as the Extreme E were selected to exemplify the entire electric motorsport. The protective space conceptualisation of Smith and Raven (2012) that focuses on shielding, nurturing and empowering processes was used to conduct the analysis and describe the electric motorsport as a niche. The analysis showed that the electric motorsport as niche shows great capabilities of making contributions towards the development of EVs, but currently is not utilised to this potential. -

Consequently, Audi Sport, in addition to its commitments in Formula E and the DTM, will be competing in the FIA World Rallycross Championship as well. Longstanding Audi factory driver Mattias Ekström founded EKS in early 2014, subsequently leading the squad to the top of the world’s standings with great personal commitment within the space of only three years. In the 2016 season, Ekström and EKS in the all-wheel-drive Audi S1 EKS RX quattro won both the drivers’ and the teams’ world championships against strong competitors from Ford, Peugeot, Volkswagen and numerous privateer teams. “We realized that it was becoming increasingly difficult for EKS to stand its ground against the factory teams, so we decided to intensify our commitment in the World RX,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass. News release 20.09.15 Petter’s best in Barcelona Norwegian superstar Petter Solberg celebrated victory at the maiden World RX of Barcelona at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya today (Sunday). Petter’s no stranger to winning, but it’s been a pretty lean summer in terms of time on the top step for the two-time FIA World Champion. Which is why he was so pleased to land a first victory since World RX of Great Britain at Lydden Hill in May. That and the fact he didn’t let his son Oliver down… Solberg, who is 35 points clear at the top of the World RX table with three rounds remaining this season, said: “We have fought hard for this win the whole weekend. We’ve run a lot of different set-ups on the car – we had to really work at it to catch Peugeot. All the time, the 208 was taking tenths of seconds, but eventually the brilliant PSRX engineers worked it out. “My son won a crosskart race in Sweden today; I got the message by telephone and he was joking and being quite confident and cocky in telling me I couldn’t let the family down – I actually really felt the pressure from that! “In the end, I could call him back and be quite cocky back with him. I liked that! “Everything was going quite well from the start, but in the third heat, I touched the wall on the left side – there was loads of dust in the car and I really couldn’t see so well. -

Our teams doing the General Test on Tuesday need to put vehicles by the main entry security gate on the gravel until MSO are ready for them. Cars may be prepared here. Nothing can be left in the Inner Paddock – an event takes place there on Wednesday. One team (not ours) who selfishly left their vehicle in Paddock 2 at Knockhill on the Tuesday night (despite being told not to) caused MSO major problems - they lost more than two hours trying to work round it and had severe difficulties parking up other teams. The event in the Swedish province of Värmland is both the home round for EKS and a big motorsport party. The organizers expect some 45,000 spectators to turn out for the “Magic Weekend” from June 30 to July 2. One of the protagonists, though, will be missing: Mattias Ekström. The Swedish Audi factory driver passes up his home round in favor of the DTM round at the Norisring. His compatriot P-G Andersson will stand in for him. “In Höljes, I won in 2014 and 2015. It goes without saying that I’d have liked to clinch my third big trophy there,” says the reigning Rallycross World Champion. “But the DTM has priority and, regrettably, I can’t split myself in half. Fortunately, my boss, Dieter Gass, made the decision for me.” His Swedish compatriot P-G Andersson will take Ekström’s place in Höljes. The 2004 and 2007 Junior Rally World Champion is no stranger to the World RX. In 2014, he debuted in the 560-hp Audi S1 EKS RX quattro at the World RX round in Turkey. In the 2015 season, the now 37-year- old Andersson contested ten rounds in a VW Polo for Marklund Motorsport, scoring a fourth place in Belgium as his best result. -

Snap-On Business Solutions Technician Award is chosen from the competing teams, to win a £250 Snap-on tool voucher. At the end of the season Snap-on Business Solutions will award a tool cabinet worth £3000 to the mechanic deemed to have put in the biggest effort overall.
