The move signifies a considerable increase in Monster Energy’s involvement in Rallycross which begun with its IMG reveals Monster Energy as sposnor for FIA championship backing of British racer Liam Doran in 2011 and included title sponsorship of the British ERC round and British Rallycross championship this year. “Being a part of this championship from the beginning is a great opportunity for us, we look forward to working with IMG to grow this fantastic sport … and to getting involved with Rallycross fans next year,” said Monster Energy’s marketing direct Jamal Benmiloud. IMG’s Martin Anayi said, “Rallycross has the components to be the perfect 21st century motor sport; it’s short, sharp, full of action and has some great personalities. We need to keep those core elements that make rallycross so special but repackage it and present it to an audience that has not yet discovered how great it is.” The launch, held in conjunction with the Gymkhana Grid event at Santa Pod, also revealed the championship calendar, the only real surprise in which is the return to the series of an Irish event. Mondello Park has been moving towards bidding for an event over the last 18-months but pushed ahead faster once it became clear that IMG would promote the series. The remaining nine events are drawn from the pool of 13 that have appeared in the series over the last few years, includes the ‘big three’ venues of Lydden Hill, Höljes and Lohéac as cornerstones as well as the traditional season closer at Buxtehude in Germany. Notably absent from the calendar are events in Holland and Belgium, the organiser in each country deciding not to apply to host an event in 2013. Promoter of the Finnish event, Pekka Mustakallio, came out firmly in favour of the revised championship. “I have been through this with the national championship in Finland. It was nearly dead when my company took it over. Some organisers did not believe there was anything wrong and did want us, but made the championship successful again. I’m totally in favour of IMG, it’s the only way for the FIA championship to survive in the future,” he said. The launch event featured the first public appearance of the new VW Polo Supercar built for 2012 TouringCar champion Anton Marklund. The 21-year-old Swede presented his new car in the championship’s new ‘RX’ branding. “It’s great for me that the championship will have a promoter just as I will move to Supercar,” said Marklund, “Everyone in Rallycross believes the sport should be bigger and IMG has great plans. Making it easier for fans to understand is good because as it is now it’s very difficult to follow.” The sport’s most successful racer, turned championship winning team owner, Kenneth Hansen said the move to have a promoter in the series was crucial. “The sport cannot change without this kind of arrangement and if it does not become a professional sport it will fade away. I am convinced that IMG will make Rallycross famous again, it hasn’t really started yet Tom Banks Tom and already it has a sponsor for the championship!” he said. 4 | #104 – November 2012 RallycrossWorld.COM RallycrossWorld.COM #104 – November 2012 | 5 Diary gallery Looking mean Anton Marklund took his new VW Polo Supercar to the launch of the FIA Rallycross Championship. In his tenth World Championship finale in a row, the defending rallycross World Champion missed yet another podium finish by 0.4 seconds. In the overall standings, the Swede still holds second behind compatriot Johan Kristoffersson. In the teams’ classification EKS is third at the half-way stage of the season. Ekström made a flying start around the rollercoaster track in Norway. Despite torrential rain, the Swede coped the best with the slippery track at the wheel of his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro, and led the overall classification after the first day. “I was a little surprised that we were so fast in the wet, but that was quattro weather,” joked Ekström after the final. “In the dry conditions on Sunday, we struggled again to match the pace of the competition. In the final we lost crucial ground right at the start. This was our own mistake and this ultimately cost us the podium finish.” Although Ekström leaves Norway without a trophy, he still scored 23 important points for the overall standings. After six of twelve rounds, the World Champion is eight points behind the leading VW driver Johan Kristoffersson.

News release 20.09.15 Petter’s best in Barcelona Norwegian superstar Petter Solberg celebrated victory at the maiden World RX of Barcelona at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya today (Sunday). Petter’s no stranger to winning, but it’s been a pretty lean summer in terms of time on the top step for the two-time FIA World Champion. Which is why he was so pleased to land a first victory since World RX of Great Britain at Lydden Hill in May. That and the fact he didn’t let his son Oliver down… Solberg, who is 35 points clear at the top of the World RX table with three rounds remaining this season, said: “We have fought hard for this win the whole weekend. We’ve run a lot of different set-ups on the car – we had to really work at it to catch Peugeot. All the time, the 208 was taking tenths of seconds, but eventually the brilliant PSRX engineers worked it out. “My son won a crosskart race in Sweden today; I got the message by telephone and he was joking and being quite confident and cocky in telling me I couldn’t let the family down – I actually really felt the pressure from that! “In the end, I could call him back and be quite cocky back with him. I liked that! “Everything was going quite well from the start, but in the third heat, I touched the wall on the left side – there was loads of dust in the car and I really couldn’t see so well.

The team nearly had redemption in hand for Race Two of the double- header event when Sverre Isachsen, who was set for an impressive 4th place finish in the Final, was spun out from behind by another competitor, forcing him to retire. The offending competitor, Ken Block, was later disqualified from the Final for the aggressive maneuver; however Isachsen remained classified in 8th overall. The X Games Munich RallyCross event was a double-header affair after the previous Global RallyCross Championship round in Barcelona was cancelled due to heavy rains. The event began on Saturday with Isachsen qualifying an impressive 3rd overall, but a mechanical problem in the Race One heats forced Isachsen to miss a chance at reaching the Final. On-track incidents inhibited Subaru team drivers Dave Mirra and Bucky Lasek from reaching the Final as well. With Saturday’s bad luck behind them, the team began Sunday’s second event with the resurgence of Isachsen qualifying 5th overall in his Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive 600hp Subaru WRX STI. Isachsen then advanced straight to the Final after passing his teammate Lasek, finishing second overall in his Heat race.
