It will be available for 30 days after broadcast via the Radio 3 website. You can listen to – and download – the concert on your mobile or tablet via the BBC iPlayer Radio app. Please ensure all mobile phones and watch-alarms are switched off. This performance is organised as a part of the European Contemporary Composers Orchestra (ECCO), a trademark project of ECSA. It aims to establish itself as a pan-European ‘body of sound’ dedicated to performance, circulation and promotion of contemporary art music, as well as gaining new audiences. In practice, it is a network of active ensembles, orchestras and young professionals, supporting creative dialogue among composers and performers through contemporary performances and on an international level. The pieces you will hear today were drawn competitively following a Europe-wide call for scores and showcase works from award-winning, multi-cultural and highly talented composers from all over Europe – nine choral works by composers from five different countries, all written in the past 15 years. BASCA exists to support and protect the artistic and professional interests of songwriters, composers and lyricists in the UK. Throughout Europe there are over 40 similar associations of more than 23,000 composers and songwriters that form ECSA with the mission to protect the rights of composers and improve the development of music creation across Europe. Is perjured, murderous, bloody, full of blame, Then, gentle cheater, urge not my amiss, Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust, Lest guilty of my faults thy sweet self prove. Enjoy’d no sooner but despised straight, For thou betraying me, I do betray Past reason hunted, and no sooner had My nobler part to my gross body’s treason; Past reason hated, as a swallow’d bait My soul doth tell my body that he may On purpose laid to make the taker mad; Triumph in love; flesh stays no farther reason, Mad in pursuit and in possession so; But rising at thy name, doth point out thee Had, having, and in quest to have, extreme; As his triumphant prize. Proud of this pride, A bliss in proof, and proved, a very woe; He is contented thy poor drudge to be, Before, a joy proposed; behind, a dream. To stand in thy affairs, fall by thy side. All this the world well knows; yet none knows well No want of conscience hold it that I call To shun the heaven that leads men to this hell. Her ‘love’, for whose dear love I rise and fall. William Shakespeare (1564–1616) 2 Two loves I have (Sonnet 144) Two loves I have of comfort and despair, Which like two spirits do suggest me still; The better angel is a man right fair, The worser spirit a woman colour’d ill. To win me soon to hell, my female evil Tempteth my better angel from my side, And would corrupt my saint to be a devil, Wooing his purity with her foul pride. And whether that my angel be turn’d fiend Suspect I may, yet not directly tell; But being both from me, both to each friend, I guess one angel in another’s hell: Yet this shall I ne’er know, but live in doubt, Till my bad angel fire my good one out. BJØRN BOLSTAD SKJELBRED (born 1970) Still in Silence (2012) Still in silence. CECILIA McDOWALL (born 1951) Standing as I do before God (1907) Emma Tring soprano I have seen death so often that it is not strange or fearful to me. Edith Cavell (1865–1915) Standing as I do in view of God and eternity, I realise patriotism is not enough: I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone. And when the time was close, For once her eyes filled with tears, Then she quietly rose through the stilled prison, The grey dawn light, passed gas flame, Tired flowers, out beyond her final night, A flame alight in hours before infinity, In the presence of death leaving all enmity: In view of God we are air after breath. Standing as I do. Sean Street (born 1946) CˇRT SOJAR VOGLAR (born 1976) Salve regina (2014) Salve regina, mater misericordiae, Hail, holy queen, mother of mercy, Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, Salve! hail our life, our sweetness and our hope! Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Hevae, To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes, to thee do we send up our sighs, In hac lacrimarum valle.
