A source exclusively revealed to OK! that neither Meghan or Kensington Palace knew that the televised chat with Thomas Markle was taking place. ‘No one in the royal family was given a heads up. It came as a surprise to everyone,’ the insider said. Duncan Larcombe, former royal editor and author of Prince Harry: The Inside Story, tells OK! that Harry will have been Meghan’s rock throughout this latest ordeal: ‘Meghan will have been feeling rattled and upset by what her father has done, but as always Harry will have been there to support her. Meghan is new to how the royal family works but Harry has been dealing with it his whole life, so he knows how to handle situations like this. It’s clear how in love and protective he is of Meghan so he’ll have been doing his best to reassure her that everything was okay.’ Talking of Thomas’s interview, royal expert Omid Scobie told us: ‘No doubt it will have been an emotional week for Meghan. No daughter wants to wake up and see their father on television talking about a life they’ve so desperately tried to keep private.’ OK! was at Royal Ascot as Meghan joined her husband for the traditional procession. The crowds erupted as, just after 2pm, the couple rode by in the royal carriage with Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex. Her Majesty the Queen, Princess Anne, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were also there. As Harry and Meghan walked hand in hand into the royal box in time for the first race, they seemed still to be riding on a high from their wedding day just a month previously. But despite their smiles, Meghan appeared to seek comfort from her husband, linking her arm through his, taking his hand and touching his back. 4 Above: The Duchess of Sussex was radiant as she waved to the Royal Ascot crowds and posed with her husband (facing page left). Below left: Cheeky Frankie gave Meghan’s hand a kiss! Below right: The duchess was all smiles on the day 6 Above: Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. Below: Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie During his first ever interview, Thomas told GMB hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about his daughter’s tears after she discovered he wasn’t well enough to attend her wedding. He also confessed that he discussed politics with Harry as they struck up a bond over the phone during the early stages of his romance with Meghan. As a rule, the royal family are supposed to remain politically neutral, but during the interview, Thomas said: ‘I was complaining I didn’t like [US President] Donald Trump and he said to give him a chance. I sort of disagreed with that but I still liked Harry.’ Duncan told OK! that the interview will have been seen as a betrayal of Harry and Meghan’s trust, particularly after the Duke of Sussex has spoken passionately about wanting to protect the privacy of the former Suits actress. Shortly after their romance became public, Harry released an unprecedented statement criticising intrusive reporting about Meghan, and calling for her ‘safety’ to be protected. ‘Thomas’s interview causes a real problem for Harry and Meghan. They need those closest to them to help protect their privacy and now they know they can’t trust him. It poses lots of problems for the future. For example, if Meghan gets pregnant they’ll feel like they can’t tell him for fear he’ll let it slip. I don’t think there’s any way either of them gave Thomas their permission for the interview to go ahead,’ Duncan says. The interview will no doubt have been an extra blow for Harry after the prince advised his father-in-law on how to deal with intense media interest in his personal life. Speaking on GMB, Thomas said of Harry’s advice: ‘Most of it was, don’t speak to the press. The rest of the things were to be careful. They were emphatic about not giving any information to the press or talking to them.’ Duncan adds that after Harry and Meghan forgave Thomas for setting up paparazzi shots ahead of their wedding day, this interview could put even more strain on their relationship with him.

  • ANDREA BOCELLI at Last, a Legend at Last, a Legend for the New
ANDREA BOCELLI At last, a legend At last, a legend for the new millennium. A myth in the Homeric sense, “story delivered by word of mouth”, which blossomed through singing, just like Caruso, Gigli, Del Monaco, Corelli… A legend of Andrea Bocelli’s caliber cannot be artificially designed: not even the most astute marketing plan would be able to come up with such a result. People simply recognize his talent and choose him. This is what happened, in an apparently well-matched but perfect context, the Italian singing competition Sanremo in 1994, because the childhood of a legend follows a course that breaks tradition. Since then, the tone of his voice has brought gentleness to the world and his fame has increased exponentially. “If God could sing, He would sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli”: even Celine Dion’s famous comment is a clear, unadorned testament to the artist’s legendary status, as well as the perception of a God given gift. That voice, that melancholic and at the same time radiant tone, unrivalled in interpreting the love song of a lover or a father, a matchless expression of earthly desire or heavenly love. We are about to celebrate the first twenty years of his career, supported by the sale of 80 million records. With talent comes responsibility “I don’t think one decides to become a singer, it is decided for you by the reactions of the people around you”. Andrea Bocelli has had to come to terms with having two all-encompassing gifts. The first is a specific timbre, which has become his signature, full and powerful, versatile to the point that he can range from the belcanto to the furor of verismo, from the sacred repertoire to the popular ballads.
