A PUBLICATION OF FOXCROFT ACADEMY for ALUMNI & FRIENDS

Dear Friends of Foxcroft Academy:

his September looked forward to the first morning of school when I, along with faculty and staff, welcomed new and return- T ing families and their students to our campus at Foxcroft Academy. This year, my second at Foxcroft Academy, it was a pleasure to greet 370 local day students as well as 61 students whose fam- ilies or towns pay tuition directly to the Academy, among which Foxcroft Academy are 26 boarding students, both domestic and international. Board of Trustees I would like to say to our families: thank you for the privilege of educating your children. As an independent school we understand President, Vandy E. Hewett ’75 that we must earn the right to educate the students who attend Vice President, Peter W. Culley ’61 Foxcroft Academy. While historically Foxcroft, and then Dover, and more Secretary, Lois W. Reynolds ’54 recently, Monson, Charleston, and Sebec have chosen to send their students Treasurer, Donna L. Hathaway ’66 to the Academy, we never take for granted this tremendous privilege given to us by the Susan M. Almy families and towns who have Foxcroft Academy as their school of choice. William C. Bisbee Others too have recognized the quality of education provided by the Academy because Rebecca R. Engdahl ’52 Edgar E. Gammon ’47 in recent years a number of families and students from neighboring towns with their own H. Thomas Gerrish ’52 public high school have expressed an interest in attending Foxcroft Academy. Students and Kenneth A. Hews '65 families are attracted to the Academy in large measure due to the breadth of our academic Jane Hibbard-Merrill program, including our Advanced Placement courses. Unfortunately, many of these parents Wayne O. Huff Frank T. Knaut ’70 can't afford tuition payments. Recognizing this need, Paul and Genie Dillon created the Azure David R. Staff members conducting the training have explained to students, “When we think about schools and what should be taught in them, of course we think that academ- ics should be the main focus. But it is hard to learn in a place without a common core of values that makes it a safe place and one that en- sures equal treatment for all students. Although teachers and admin- istrators should be the model for such behavior, they alone are not responsible for making schools such a place. Students have an obliga- tion to each other to uphold treatment that delivers respect.” From a historical perspective, the Academy has always viewed its educational mission very “holistically”, in fact, as recently as 1972 Foxcroft Academy had as a part of its mission statement phrases such as “social consciousness” and “moral obligations” and the student handbook even included the statement, “promotion of literature, science, morality, and piety….based on the teaching of Jesus Christ.” While today Foxcroft serves as a non-sectarian independent school, the Academy remains true to its historic mission as it focuses on the development of a common code of ethics which can guide the conduct and behavior of administration, faculty, and students. Toward this end, staff members have provided 45 students with training over a period of several months in an ethical problem solving model which has taught them to examine their own personal values, think before they act, and act in harmony with what we as an institu- Colleen Grover leading ethics workshop for Trustees

Charitable Giving Report of Charitable Giving July 1, 2003, through June 30, 2004

Dear Friends, On behalf of Foxcroft Academy’s Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your participation in this year’s annual giving program. Your gift shows your understanding of the challenges inherent in funding independent school education as well as playing a critical role in bridging the gap between tuition revenues and the true cost of an FA education. We exceeded this year’s goal raising $61,000 in unrestricted gifts which directly supported the instructional budget. This expression of your confidence in Foxcroft Academy is essential as we look to maintain the breadth of our academic programming while local tuition revenues decline. In addition, $137,336 in charitable cash gifts were received to support specific academic, athletic, and scholarship programs. We also received in-kind gifts valued at over $60,000. Again, thank you for your generosity to Foxcroft Academy. Vandy Ellis Hewett ’75 President, Board of Trustees

Presentations of the alumni awards were made with Mrs. Madelyn Ballard Betts ’30 receiving the Dr. Mary Chandler Lowell Award, given to an alumnus who has distinguished him/herself in their chosen profession. Ironically, Mrs. Betts was instrumental in organizing the Mary Chandler Lowell collections at the Class of 1954 Float Thompson Free Library, and the Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society continues to use her book Old Foxcroft as a refer- ence bible for many historical and genealogical inquiries. Edie Allen, Gene Gammon ‘47, Shirley Rowell Gammon ‘50 Awarded the Tillson Thomas Award for her 12 years of service to Foxcroft Academy was Mrs. Gwendolyn Trefethen Haynes. From 1949 - 1961 she was known as Mrs. Trefethen, whose son Bob was a member of the Class of 1954. Mrs. Trefethen taught Latin and French and was the only foreign language teacher here at that time. She also coached the girls’ basketball team and served as a class advisor to a number of classes. In addition, she directed “Class Day” programs for several graduating classes, including the class of 1952’s production of Alice in Wonderland. Mrs. Haynes, now 94 years old, is in a nursing home and her son Bob graciously accepted the award for her. Class of 1964 The Sunday morning brunch in the Pride Manufactur- ing Student Center was well attended and the numbers continue to grow each year. It’s a great way for classes to wrap up their reunion weekend.

randon Hall ’04, son of Gordon and Missy Merrill Hall ’84, placed first in the high jump at the annual New England Interscholastic Outdoor Track and BField Championship held in Plymouth, MA. Brandon was one of only two Mainers to win a New England championship, winning the title with a jump of 6-8. During Brandon’s career at Foxcroft, he won 7 individual state champion- ships, three in high jump, two in the long jump and two in the triple jump. He won 5 conference titles and 1 regional title. He holds the PVC high jump record at 6-8 1/4 and the State Class C record at the same height, a feat he achieved at this spring’s Class C State Championship Track and Field meet hosted by Foxcroft Academy. He barely missed on his second try at 6-10 1/4, which would have been the best jump in state history for all classes. This meet also produced six state records and two triple-event winners, with Brandon sweeping the long, triple and high jumps for the second straight year, including his 6- 8 1/4 in the high jump. Brandon Hall ‘04 wins New England title FA Students attend Summer Program at Bates College

hree Foxcroft Academy students: Danielle Tudor, Dustin Colbry and Caitlyn Walsh spent part of their summer at Bates College where T they participated in the Edmund S. Muskie Scholars Program. This program offers two weeks of intensive college-level instruction to outstanding upcoming high school seniors who have a strong interest in U.S. political history since World War II. Participants in the program live on the Bates College campus. During their two weeks of residence, Dustin, Danielle and Caitlyn examined in depth such topics as the civil rights move- ment, the emergence of environmentalism, the U.S. economy, U.S. foreign policy, the Vietnam War and Watergate. At the same time, their studies allowed them to develop an historical perspective on contemporary polit- ical events and developments. As in college, Muskie Scholars attend lectures, engage in small-group Danielle Tudor, Dustin Colbry and Caitlyn Walsh discussions and in-class exercises, and make use of the rich instructional resources of the college, including more than 600,000 volumes in the Ladd Library. A key feature of the program is a substantive assignment that demands research within the papers of Edmund S. Muskie in the Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library, one of the largest collections in the nation on a political figure. These students were part of Rusty Willette’s Advanced Placement American History class, one of six Advanced Placement courses of- fered at Foxcroft Academy. Two of these students received scholarships from the Foxcroft Academy Scholarship Association to aid in the tuition cost of the program.

The alumni dinner on Saturday and the breakfast on Sunday at FA’s dining hall were attended by members of the class. Coming the greatest distance for those two events was Brenda Palmer, widow of Charles, from Eng- land, and their two sons from Washington, D.C. and families. A reunion will be held next year on Friday after- noon, August 5, 2005, also at the Stevens home. Brenda Palmer, spouse of Charles Palmer (dec.), Lou Stevens and Bev Wolfe at Alumni Banquet

The Class of 1943 Holds Monthly Get-Togethers

Each month, members of the FA Class of 1943 hold a reunion luncheon meeting at the home or camp of one of their classmates. At the Fowler’s camp in July, they had fifteen people attend the noon meal with a large supply of “colossal” shrimp provided by Hesta Maynard and Ed Craine. They would like to express their condolences to those classmates who were un- able to attend. In August they met at the Maine State Museum with Anne Bonsey Dow for a tour with lunch in the caf- eteria following. Anne provided dessert at her resi- dence nearby. They continue to meet each month and enjoy rem- iniscing and catching up on new news. They love doing it and agree some other classes should try it. Cast Your Vote Alumni Awards

Alumni may vote for 2005 recipients of the Dr. Mary Chandler Lowell Award and the Tillson D. Thomas Award by using the form below or e-mailing your vote to the Alumni Office. These two awards are presented each year at the Alumni Banquet. (The Trustees also present the Oakes Family Award and the James S. Holmes Award.) Candidates for the Dr. Mary Chandler Lowell Award should be an alumnus of Foxcroft Academy who has distinguished him/her- self in their particular vocational field. The Tillson D. Thomas Award recognizes a past faculty or staff member who, in the opinion of their former students, has served the students of Foxcroft Academy with the highest degree of professionalism. Nominees to the Tillson Thomas Award need not be an alumnus, but they must have been a member of the Foxcroft Academy faculty or staff at one time.
