-1- Old St. James Church in White Oak, a Commemorative Print Recently, Mary G. Hess donated a framed commemorative print of St. James Parish to the German Heritag Museum. It is based on a painting by Rev. Dr. Francis J. Pabisch (1825-79), and was issued for the sesquicentennial of the church (1843-1993). Prior to her move to Columbus, Mary G. Hess lived in Cincin- nati, and has family connections to the church. Her great-grandmother was Elisabeth Anna Maria Aumann Tiemann (1835-63) and her son Heinrich Tiemann (1858-68) are both buried in the cemetery of the church. The great-grand- mother was born in Dinklage, a town in the district of in Lower Sax- ony. Her son, who was born in Hamilton County, died at an early age due to a sledding accident. Mary G. Hess is well known to members of the Palatines to America: German Genealogy Society, as she worked for many years as office manager in the society’s office in Columbus. Many thanks to her for this fine donation to the German Heritage Museum.

-2- Wasserdoktor Sebastian Kneipp By Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann My father had Kneipp’s book auf deutsch on the Wasser-Kur, which dealt with the healing powers of water. Herbal medicines and teas were other items my father considered important. According to the “More than Beer and Schnitzel” Facebook site: “Sebastian Kneipp was born 200 years ago, on May 17th 1821. He died in 1897. After humble beginnings as a weaver’s son who had to help from an early age and barely got an education, Kneipp became a priest. He started treating himself after reading a book about the healing powers of water. Over time he developed treatment plans for patients, often people who couldn’t pay a doctor or whose condition were deemed incur- able. Doctors and pharmacists didn’t really care for his methods but Kneipp continued and eventually wrote down his theory. He became famous and was called the Wasserdoktor (water doctor).”

“The five pillars of his philosophy are: 1. Water (water treatments) 2. Healing or medicinal plants 3. Movement 4. (Healthy) Nutrition 5. Balance”

Due to Covid restrictions and because the German Heritage Museum was undergoing a major renovation, we were not able to visit the museum. Manfred and Regina came to school and shared stories about their childhood in Germany during WW2, education and schooling, their immigration to the United States and life here in Cincinnati. The students were very interested and taken by their stories and lifetime experiences as well as by the school notebooks Manfred brought with him. You can appreciate these in the photos attached. -6- -7- -8- A German Pioneer Priest: Johann Martin Henni (1805-81) By Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann

Born in Obersaxen, Switzerland, Henni came to America in 1829, and was ordained to the priesthood in Cincinnati. In 1834, he became pastor of Holy Trinity Church (Heilige Dreifaltigkeits-Kirche). It was the first German in Cincinnati, and is considered the mother church of German Catholic churches in Cincinnati.

Other German Catholic churches followed its founding, including: Old St. Mary’s Church, St. John the Baptist Church, St. Philomena, St. Paul Church, St. Michael the Archangel, St. Augustine Church, Immaculata Church, St. Anthony Church, and St. Stephen’s Church (later renamed: Our Lady of Victory).

Henni published a fascinating book on the German Catholics of the area: Ein Blick in’s Thal des Ohio: oder, Briefe über den Kampf und das Wiederaufleben der katholischen Kirche im fernen Westen der Vereinigten Staaten Nordamerika’s (München: Franz Seraph Hübschmann, 1836). It would be a great contribution to local history to have this work translated into English.

Another major accomplishment of Henni’s was the founding of the Wahrheits-Freund, the first German Catholic paper in the U.S. It was published from 1837 to 1908 in Cincinnati, and like Henni’s book is a goldmine of information. In 1843, Henni was appointed Bishop of the newly established Diocese of Milwaukee, and played an important role there as well.

For further information about Henni, see: Martin Marty, Dr. Johann Martin Henni, erster Bischop von Milwaukee. Ein Lebensbild aus der Pionier-Zeit von Ohio und ... (New York Benziger Brothers, 1888). Like Henni’s book, this work is certainly deserving of translation into English.

In 1895, the first German Day celebration took place, and was sponsored by the German Day Society. In 1906, it affiliated with the National German-American Alliance, and became the German-American Alliance of Cincinnati, which in German was: Deutsch-Amerikanischer Stadtverband von Cincinnatri. In honor of the occasion, a flag was donated to it by the German-American Women’s League: the Frauenstadtverband. As a result of the World War I, the Alliance changed its name to the American Citizens League, and after World War II to: German-American Citizens League. Its original flag was preserved and framed by Gottfried Schlembach, and is now on display at the German Heritage Museum.

-17- From 2019 German Bible donation to the German Heritage Museum

Thanks to Bob Stevie for the donation of his family's 19th century German Bible to the German Heritage Museum. Large Bibles like this were popular with German-American families in the 19th century. They were called Victorian Bibles, as they were produced during the Victorian era.

According to Patrick J. Donmoyer: “With deeply embossed leather covers, stamped foil decorations, heavy hinged clasps meant to last for generations, tasseled bookmarks, and such copious lithographic illustrations, maps, charts, and tables, these works truly became encyclopedic in their scope of content as well as lavish in form.” They also included a section between the Old and New Testaments for information on births, deaths, weddings, etc. of the owners’ family.

For further information on Victorian Bibles, see: The German Bible in America, by Don Yoder, and edited by Patrick J. Donmoyer (Kutztown, Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, 2016).

-18- Estate Planning

Aside from the German newspapers I get, I also receive several newsletters from German-American societies. One from the German Society of Pennsylvania: Neuer Pennsylvanischer Staatsbote. The most recent issue (Spring 2021) has an article with a “Development Report” that deals with estate planning. I would like to quote a few lines that are relevant to the German Heritage Museum. The articles notes that with estate planning family and relatives usually come first when making out a will. However, it is also a time to take donations into consideration. The article notes:

“Over the past ten years we have repeatedly asked members and friends of the Society to consider a legacy gift! The term “legacy” does not relate to the size of a donation – rather it is an indication that the gift comes through estate planning or was part of a bequest in a will.” These comments are also relevant to the German Heritage Museum, since donations made through estate planning will ensure its preservation for future generations. Donations in any amount via estate planning are greatly appreciated.

Donations certainly have helped the German Society of Pennsylvania, which was founded in 1764, and is still going strong. So, donations can also benefit the German Heritage Museum. If this is something that might be of interest, please contact the German-American Citizens League. Vielen Dank!

-19- Conrad H. Beyer, a Cincinnati German Civil War Soldier By Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann

Thanks to FB friend Janet Ross for the information on her GG Grandfather: Conrad H. Beyer. She also sent two pictures of him, one in uniform and one in later life where he is wearing the badge of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic), the veterans’ organization for Civil War soldiers. Beyer (1845-99) was born in Cincinnati, the son of German immigrants. Note that he enlisted at age 17, and served throughout the war. Beyer served in the 28th Regiment OVI, one of Cincinnati’s German regiments in the Civil War. Janet sent the following message: “Conrad Beyer, my GG Grandfather served with Ohio 28th Infantry. -20- Auswandererdenkmal in Bremerhaven Emigrants Monument in Bremerhaven by: Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann

In 1985, the Auswandererdenkmal (Emigrants Monument) was dedicated in Bremerhaven, and was constructed by means of contributions from German-American societies across the U.S. The German-American Citizens League also contributed to its construction, and its name is on a plaque on the back of the monument in German (Deutsch-Amerikanische Bürger-Liga). The monument shows a father looking forward to life in the New World, the mother looking back to the Old Country, and the child between the two. The monument is near the Deutsches Auswandererhaus (German Emigration Center) in Bremerhaven. -21-

An Alsatian Priest’s Congregation in Cincinnati By Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann This is a follow-up on my note on the gravesite of Rev. F.X. Mesmer (1839-1907), the Alsatian priest at Our Lady of Victory Church in Delhi Township on Cincinnati’s west side. Born in Blodelsheim in Alsace, he served as pastor at the church from the 1880s to the early 1900s. It was established as a German Catholic congregation in 1842, and originally bore the German name of “Maria zum Siege,” now translated as Our Lady of Victory in English. Many of the gravesites in the church’s cemetery have German inscriptions, and some indicate the birthplace. Several examples are shown here: First, there is the gravestone for Agatha Gerteisen Engler (1819-1891), and her husband Joseph Engler (1817-92). Both were from Baden, she from Merdingen, and he from Niederrimsingen. Then there is one for: Nicolaus Drexler (1830- 1906) and his wife, Regina Drexler (1824-1895). Both were born in Walschbronn in Lothringen (Lorraine). No gravesites show birthplaces in northern Germany, which leads me to the tentative conclusion that this church might have served immigrants mainly from the southwest corner of the German-speaking realm: Alsace, Lorraine, and Baden. This corresponds with other German Catholic and Protestant congregations in the Cincinnati area that were formed by Germans from the same general area.

-22- The 17th of June - Tag der deutschen Einheit, now a Day of Remembrance FROM: MORE THAN BEER AND SCHNITZEL FACEBOOK SITE Before the reunification of West and East Germany in 1990 and the establishment of "German Unity Day" on October 3rd, West Germany's "Tag der Deutschen Einheit" was June 17th. Starting on June 12th, workers across East Germany went on strike and protested in the streets. By June 17th, as many as 500 communities and 1 million people were involved in strikes and protests. They were unhappy with the rapid establishment of socialist structures, the disregard of the workers and their needs, the increase of job norms or standards, the economic crisis that also led to food shortages, the oppression of anybody who identified as Christian. They demanded better work conditions, better man- agement of the economy, free elections, and a unified Germany. The uprising was quelled by Soviet forces, not only in East Germany, but also in the other Eastern Bloc states where protests started. Since 1990, October 3rd is the "Tag der Deutschen Einheit" for the reunified Germany. But June 17th remains a Day of Remembrance. (This is a very short and not comprehensive summary.)
