It was late October 2016 when our Sales and Marketing team began “pre-selling”— accepting entrance fee deposits—for our new 98 Independent Living residences which were yet to be built. It was determined that an achievable, but, aggressive goal was to pre-sell the entire new building by October 2017. Not only did this “dream team” meet that goal, they beat it—by five months! As of May 2017, in a span of seven short months, 100% of the 98 apartments were spoken for, with a waiting list to boot! Technology played a role in helping meet this challenge. Through the magic of drone photography, prospective residents were given the opportunity to actually “see” what their new apartment’s views were when they were selecting their residence. This technology aided their decision to ensure they were choosing the best home for themselves. Future residents of the new Independent Living building, named The Prairies*, had the choice of 14 new floor plans, each perfectly suited to today’s modern senior. Many of The Monarch, one of the 98 residences were thoughtfully designed to maximize the spectacular views of fourteen floorplans. the Flatirons with all having outdoor living space with private covered balconies. *officially named in February 2018 9 FRASIER HONORS THE PAST AND BUILDS FOR THE FUTURE “Frasier Forward,” a celebration and blessing of our Master Plan expansion, kicked off the $90+ million construction project as well as the ceremonial demolition of our old Assisted Living building. We recognized our progress since the great flood of September 2013, by entering into the construction phase and commemorating Frasier Forward. It was a beautiful, breezy Saturday, on October 14, 2017. Over 300 people attend the festivities that included speeches from Boulder Mayor Suzanne Jones, State Representative Edie Hooton, Reverend Karen Howe, Frasier Board of Trustees Past Chair Jon Kottke, Frasier President and CEO Timothy A. Johnson, Frasier Chaplain Bob Ritzen, Frasier resident (and past Colorado State Representative and State Senator) Dorothy Rupert, and Frasier resident Alex Herzog. A highlight of the event was the ceremonial demolition of the Frasier old Assisted Living building. Residents, guests, and staff alike were delighted with the opportunity to take “swipes” of the old building from huge excavators. “Truly, Frasier’s past is the foundation that inspires our future dreams. After the devastating 2013 flood that greatly affected us, a new genesis of our Master Plan began to take shape. It’s been four years of planning and working with the residents, staff, the City, and our Master Plan partners, to arrive at this point – and we couldn’t be more pleased for the future of Frasier,” stated Tim Johnson.

Bradshaw, Advisor Audrey E. Ellenwood Graduate Faculty Representative James C. Foust Lynda Dee Dixon © 2007 Lisa Marshall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season.

  • 30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom
30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? Aaron: You know my work. Walk with me. I’m Aaron Sorkin. The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Social Network.

FRASIER: A CULTURAL HISTORY Joseph J. Darowski and Kate Darowski Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield, 2017 ROBERT MURTAGH Universidad de Almería [email protected] 177 Part of independent publisher Rowman & Littlefield’s “Cultural History of Television” series that (according to their website) “will focus on iconic television shows” from the 1950s to the present that have had a lasting impact on world culture, Frasier: A Cultural History joins a collection of extant publications on defining sitcoms such as Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Star Trek. The authors of the text in question, Joseph J. Darowski and Kate Darowski, are self-confessed Frasier fans with a background in different ambits of cultural study (the former as editor of the “Ages of Superheroes” essay series and author of X-Men and the Mutant Metaphor: Race and Gender in the Comic Books and the latter having researched the history of decorative arts and design). Above all, they share a mutual appreciation for all things Crane. From a structural perspective, the book is divided into two parts: “Part I: Making A Classic” and “Part II: Under Analysis”. Each section is further subdivided into four separate topics. The first deals with: the evolution of Cheers to the emergence of Frasier Crane; the story behind the eclectic cast; character profiles of Frasier, Niles, Martin and Eddy; and finally, a discussion of Daphne and Roz. The second part, as the name suggests, is more academically inclined with chapters examining ongoing character development in the Crane household; an in-depth look at Frasier’s apartment from structural and aesthetic perspectives, as well as in contrast to Niles’s home at the Montana; an analysis of set decoration, particularly chairs; and lastly, the representation of women, gender and race.

HBO Leads 60th Primetime Emmys 30 Rock, Mad Men Take Top Series September 21, 2008 A 1960s advertising agency, a fictional sketch-comedy show and the second president of the United States were among the big winners at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards. Among the twenty-eight awards handed out over the course of the Television Academy’s diamond anniversary event, which was telecast live on ABC, HBO topped the night with 10 winged statuettes. NBC followed with four. Combined with its awards at last Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys, HBO led for the year as well, with 26 in all. Leading the recipients of multiple awards between the two awards ceremonies was HBO’s seven-part historical miniseries John Adams, with 13 Emmys, surpassing a miniseries record set by another HBO production, Angels in America, which won 11 in 2004, and ABC’s Eleanor and Franklin, which won 11 in 1976. It was an evening of milestones and memories. Among the September 21 ceremony’s firsts: the Primetime Emmys’ debut in their new venue, NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, in downtown Los Angeles. In another landmark, 2008 was the first time an Emmy was awarded for outstanding host for a reality or reality-competition program. The five nominees, Tom Bergeron (Dancing with the Stars), Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Howie Mandel (Deal or No Deal), Jeff Probst (Survivor) and Ryan Seacrest (American Idol) — commemorated the new category by hosting the festivities. In addition, a new record was set for consecutive wins in a single category when Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart prevailed as outstanding variety, music or comedy series and CBS’s The Amazing Race was named outstanding reality-competition program.

We will continue to contribute to the health, happiness, and well-being of seniors through innovation, expansion of quality care, and support for our members and the greater community. letter from THE PRESIDENT & CHAIRMAN TIMOTHY A. JOHNSON JAMES R. TOPPING Greetings! It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 Frasier Annual Report. In the pages that follow, you’ll learn about the highlights of the past year and find data, pictures and stories that will give you more insight. The unifying theme, Onward, is apparent throughout this report and our 2018 year. Mary Church Terrell stated, “And so, lifting as we climb, onward and upward we go, struggling and striving, and hoping that the buds and blossoms of our desires will burst into glorious fruition ere long.” This quote resonates with our many accomplishments of the year – all while undergoing construction of our massive Master Plan expansion. Many construction projects were completed in 2018. The construction of The Prairies, our new 98-apartment independent living building, The Canyons Center at Frasier, the Wellness Center expansion, and the building of and refurbishment of dining venues, continued at a fast pace throughout 2018. To complement these projects and have cohesiveness throughout campus, our very engaged resident focus group led by Frasier staff developed a naming strategy/theme of “Colorado geographic features” for our buildings and service areas. Frasier also remains financially strong with positive cash flow, an extraordinary large amount of days cash on hand, high occupancies, and a wait list of over 400.

  • Women's Leadership in Primetime Television an Introductory Study
Women’s Leadership in Primetime Television An Introductory Study Natalie Greene Spring 2009 General University Honors Capstone Advisor: Karen O’Connor Greene 1 Women’s Leadership in Prime-time Television: An Introductory Study Introduction When television executives report their core audience, women always come out ahead. A 2007 Nielsen Media Research report showed that, with only two exceptions, every broadcast network channel had more female viewers than men. ABC’s female audience almost doubled its male audience during the 2007-08 season (Atkinson, 2008). 1 Women onscreen, however, seem to reflect a different reality, making up only 43% of characters in the prime-time 2007-08 season (Lauzen, 2008). 2 As studies going back as far as the 1970s show, women on screen not only fail to represent the proportional makeup of women in society, they also overwhelmingly show a stereotypically gendered version of women (McNeil, 1975; Signorielli and Bacue, 1999; United States Commission on Civil Rights, 1977). This paper aims to address the evolution of women’s leadership in prime-time network scripted television from 1950 to 2008. Because of the way that women have been traditionally marginalized in television, it is important to study the shows that have featured women as lead characters. Characters such as Lucy Ricardo ( I Love Lucy, 1951-1960) influenced later female leads such as Ann Marie ( That Girl, 1966-1971), Mary Richards ( The Mary Tyler Moore Show, 1970-1977) and Murphy Brown ( Murphy Brown, 1988-1998). Thus, along with an introduction to socialization theory and feminist television criticism, this paper covers a selection of some of the most influential female characters and women-centered shows of this period.
