Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television.     30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. The authors of the text in question, Joseph J. Darowski and Kate Darowski, are self-confessed Frasier fans with a background in different ambits of cultural study (the former as editor of the “Ages of Superheroes” essay series and author of X-Men and the Mutant Metaphor: Race and Gender in the Comic Books and the latter having researched the history of decorative arts and design). Above all, they share a mutual appreciation for all things Crane. From a structural perspective, the book is divided into two parts: “Part I: Making A Classic” and “Part II: Under Analysis”. Each section is further subdivided into four separate topics. The first deals with: the evolution of Cheers to the emergence of Frasier Crane; the story behind the eclectic cast; character profiles of Frasier, Niles, Martin and Eddy; and finally, a discussion of Daphne and Roz.     Weekly Fishing Reports Ebb & Flow Week 4: June 24, 2016 June 24, 2016 By Deepwater Don Father’s Day was no doubt rewarding in every way for US Open winner and new dad Dustin Johnson, but so it was too for a number of father and son and father and daughter fishing duos up north, where the sun has recently prevailed over calm seas and lots of rod-bending action from Boulder-Gunia all the way to Lacy Island. The latter location is where the father and son team of Michael (Dad) and Julian Morris picked up a matching pair of 32-pound Tyees within two hours of their arrival at North Island Lodge. Darned if they didn’t also find a 38 the following morning, which they kept along-side just long enough for some pictures and a smooth release by guide Kyle Alton. Nice work gentlemen. * Michael Morris with guide Kyle Alton and a 38lb Tyee. * Kyle with the release. Meanwhile over at The Clubhouse Kelly Van Aken bagged a Tyee this past week too, while son Oliver caught and released a sizable slab on a Hali-hunt in the 40 plus range. Kelly’s uncle George Berry and his son Nicholas had a whole lot of fun catching their limit of Chinook Salmon, as did Andrew Ference and daughter Stella, who made lasting memories together on the waters of magical Haida Gwaii. No Tyees to report in those boats, but lots of fish for all from the low-teens to mid-20s. * Kelly Van Aken spending fathers day with his son Oliver.

    HBO Leads 60th Primetime Emmys 30 Rock, Mad Men Take Top Series September 21, 2008 A 1960s advertising agency, a fictional sketch-comedy show and the second president of the United States were among the big winners at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards. Among the twenty-eight awards handed out over the course of the Television Academy’s diamond anniversary event, which was telecast live on ABC, HBO topped the night with 10 winged statuettes. NBC followed with four. Combined with its awards at last Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys, HBO led for the year as well, with 26 in all. Leading the recipients of multiple awards between the two awards ceremonies was HBO’s seven-part historical miniseries John Adams, with 13 Emmys, surpassing a miniseries record set by another HBO production, Angels in America, which won 11 in 2004, and ABC’s Eleanor and Franklin, which won 11 in 1976. It was an evening of milestones and memories. Among the September 21 ceremony’s firsts: the Primetime Emmys’ debut in their new venue, NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, in downtown Los Angeles. In another landmark, 2008 was the first time an Emmy was awarded for outstanding host for a reality or reality-competition program. The five nominees, Tom Bergeron (Dancing with the Stars), Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Howie Mandel (Deal or No Deal), Jeff Probst (Survivor) and Ryan Seacrest (American Idol) — commemorated the new category by hosting the festivities. In addition, a new record was set for consecutive wins in a single category when Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart prevailed as outstanding variety, music or comedy series and CBS’s The Amazing Race was named outstanding reality-competition program.
