Bruce 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This dissertation argues that the annexation of Hawaii was not the result of an aggressive move by the United States to gain coaling stations or foreign markets, nor was it a means of preempting other foreign nations from acquiring the island or mending a psychic wound in the United States. Rather, the acquisition was the result of a seventy-year relationship brokered by Americans living on the islands and entered into by two nations attempting to find their place in the international system. Foreign policy decisions by both nations led to an increasingly dependent relationship linking Hawaii’s stability to the U.S. economy and the United States’ world power status to its access to Hawaiian ports. Analysis of this seventy-year relationship changed over time as the two nations evolved within the world system. In an attempt to maintain independence, the Hawaiian monarchy had introduced a westernized political and economic system to the islands to gain international recognition as a nation-state. This new system created a highly partisan atmosphere between natives and foreign residents who overthrew the monarchy to preserve their personal status against a rising native political challenge. These men then applied for annexation to the United States, forcing Washington to confront the final obstacle in its rise to first-tier status: its own reluctance to assume the burdens and responsibilities of an imperial policy abroad. -

When I was but a few hours old, ‘Kīna’u,’ the Premier, came into the bedroom with her crowd of ‘kahus,’ took me into her arms and said that she wanted to adopt me, as she had no girl of her own.” “My mother, in her weak state, was terribly agitated, knowing that the missionaries were unpopular and entirely dependent on the good-will of the natives, so feared the consequences of a denial. They sent for my father in haste, who took in the state of affairs at a glance.” “’We don’t give away our children,’ he said to Kīna’u. ‘But you are poor, I am rich, I give you much money,’ replied the Chiefess. ‘No, you can’t have her,’ my father answered firmly. Kīna’u tossed me angrily down on the bed and walked away, leaving my poor mother in a very anxious frame of mind.” (Wilder; Wight) “She accordingly went away in an angry and sullen mood, and was not heard from until the infant was being christened a few weeks later, when she again appeared, elbowed the father to one side, and exclaimed in the haughtiest of tones, ‘Call the little baby Kīna’u.’” “Fearing that a second refusal would result disastrously, the parents agreed, and the child was accordingly christened Elizabeth Kīna’u Judd.” (The Friend, May 1912) Kīna’u “seemed somewhat appeased after the (christening) ceremony, and, as I was the first white girl she had ever seen, deigned from that time on to show a great interest in me, either visiting me or having me visit her every day.” (Wright, Wight) Kīna’u, daughter of Kamehameha I, became a Christian in 1830. -

Hale Kula Ali‘i Hale Kula Ali‘i, the Chiefs’ Children’s School (later called the Royal School), was created by King Kamehameha III; the main goal of this school was to groom the next generation of the highest-ranking chief's children of the realm and secure their positions for Hawaii's Kingdom. Seven families were eligible under succession laws stated in the 1840 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i; Kamehameha III called on seven boys and seven girls of his family to board in the Chief’s Children’s School. In 1839, King Kamehameha III, Hoapili and Kekāuluohi (mother of William Charles Lunalilo, who became the Kuhina Nui or regent of the Hawaiian Kingdom) signed a letter asking missionaries to run the Chiefs’ Children’s School. (The letter (in Hawaiian) is on the following page.) It translates to: Greetings to all of you, the teachers, Heed this all of you, all teachers. We are asking for Mr. Cooke to be a teacher for our chiefly children. He will be the instructor for the royal children. Also Dr. Judd, to take care of the chiefly children. For we are securing Dr. Judd for the good of the children and to resolve any difficulties between us and all of you. Once Kaahumanu died, in 1832, Kamehameha III went on to rule until 1854. He introduced a constitutional form of government and adoped Hawaii's first written constitution in 1840. Two other kings, called Kamehameha IV and V, succeeded the boy king, followed by two other royal Queen Liliuokalani, last royal rulers who were not part of the Kamehameha family. -

Silva Keywords: Translation, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, Hawaiian newspapers, ea, mana ABSTRACT Translation has had a huge impact on Hawaiian history, both as it unfolded and how it came to be understood, yet it remains mostly invisible and understudied in contemporary Hawaiian scholarship. The study of translation is uniquely suited for examining the power dynamics of languages, and how these differential forces play out on ideological and political battlefields, particularly in colonial situations. By providing a historical overview of the material practices of translation from the kingdom era until today, this dissertation makes legible some of the unseen operations of translation and points to its importance as an analytical frame for Hawaiian history. Individual chapters focus on major moments of translation from the advent of Hawaiian literacy to contemporary struggles over language and land: the translation of the Bible into Hawaiian, the establishment and modification of the kingdom’s bi-lingual legal system, Hawaiians’ powerful deployment of translation in the nūpepa, the twentieth century production of extractive scholarly translations, and contemporary refusals to translate. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS He lau, he mano, he kini, he lehu hoʻi. -

Rechtman, Ph.D. PREPARED FOR: North Kona Village, LLC C/o Midland Pacific Homes 6955 El Camino Real, Suite 200 Atascadero, CA 93422 June 2007 (Revised October 2008) RC-0445 Archaeological Inventory Survey Update for the ‘O‘oma Beachside Village Project Area (TMK: 3-7-3-09:004 and 022) ‘O‘oma 2nd Ahupua‘a North Kona District Island of Hawai‘i RC-0445 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY At the request of PBR Hawaii & Associates Inc., on behalf of North Kona Village, LLC, Rechtman Consulting, LLC has prepared this update to earlier DLNR-SHPD approved archaeological inventory survey work of an approximately 300 acre project area in ‘O‘oma 2nd Ahupua‘a, North Kona District, Island of Hawai‘i (TMKs: 3-7-3-09:004 and 022) (Figures 1 and 2). Between 1985 and 2002, the current project area (in part and in whole) has been subject to intensive archaeological study, including inventory survey and data recovery. In September of 1998 DLNR-SHPD prepared an update on the historic preservation status of Parcel 004, and concluded that all historic preservation issues, except preservation planning, were completed. In October of 2002 DLNR-SHPD prepared another update on the historic preservation status of Parcel 022. This DLNR- SHPD correspondence likewise indicated that both survey work and data recovery had been acceptably completed and what remained to be done was preservation planning. -
