Ichabod, the ever faithful disciple of the great Cotton Mather and hopeful victor in the battle for the Love of Katrina Van Tassel, is unamused by these folk legends and braves the odds in order to win the favor of his lovely lady. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales little bit slow in the beginning. Washington Irving likes to paint the scene very vividly for his readers. He also tends to use a lot of anecdotes in his writing. But the older English style that it is written in is beautiful and adds to the subtle reminder that this is a classic of American literature. I loved this book. I can't believe it took me this long to read it but I'm glad I finally did. View 2 comments. Oct 11, Niki nikilovestoread rated it it was amazing Shelves: classicsshort-stories. Overall, I really enjoyed the collection of short stories in the Barnes and Noble Leatherbound edition. There were a few duds that were not very good, but most of the stories were a lot of fun. This was my first time reading Washington Irving's short stories. I'm going to have to look for some of his other work. First off, I would like to note that The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales rating is a reflection The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales both Irving's work and that of the compilers. The writing would have warranted perhaps something slightly over four stars, but the edition itself is something of a drawback. More on that to come. Being a somewhat immortal and transcendentally quasi-present being, I have no particular culture of reference. That being said, I am most proficient in the rather illogical language of English, which both delights and confuses me. I have First off, I would like to note that this rating is a reflection of both Irving's work and that of the compilers. I have, however, generally avoided historical American literature, because most of it is rubbish not to my tastes. Irving, though, is perhaps the first American writer I have actually enjoyed. I will review each of these short stories, including the titular story with the only-now-making-sense artwork on the front cover, but first I will make a brief note on the collection itself. Having perused Irving's work, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales would agree that the story selection is excellent, but its aptitude is overshadowed by some strangely blatant errors in spelling, mechanics, and capitalization that riddle the text. Some perceived errors I researched and now realize to be intentional who knew yclept was a word? Random word capitalization is a bit off- putting, and substitution of smaller words like "is" where "in" should clearly be is easily overlooked but quite distracting to some pedantic readers. Rip Van Winkle 4. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow 4. Ichabod Crane, as I have now learned, is far from an imposing or foreboding figure, despite his haunted-sounding name. I originally picked this book up for Halloween, I did an aloud reading of Sleepy Hollow for my friends and kept reading from there. • Playing Puck: a Study of Performative Action in the Shaping of a ‘Legend Landscape’
PLAYING PUCK: A STUDY OF PERFORMATIVE ACTION IN THE SHAPING OF A ‘LEGEND LANDSCAPE’ ROBERT PETER IRVING A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of the West of England, Bristol, for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries and Education, University of the West of England, Bristol June 2014 Playing Puck: a study of performative action in the shaping of a ‘legend landscape.’ Abstract This thesis engages, through visual practice and written analysis, with the British tradition of ‘thin’ places that act as thresholds between everyday circumstantial reality and the otherworldly. It does so by focusing on the complex of prehistoric monuments that make up the Avebury ritual landscape because these have become a crucible of contemporary cultural significance and a site of mystical tourism concerned with allegedly paranormal phenomena. I argue that these circumstances produce a range of responses, often broadly religious or aesthetic, which involve ritualistic, artistic, and, above all, performed activity, where legends are re/enacted into being and presented as fact. My contention is that this activity not only revitalises and extends the legend as a form of cultural mediation but also stimulates a shared ‘sense of place’ that helps to enrich an existing narrative world. In this self-reinforcing cycle, memory, imagination, and artfulness together contribute to the shaping of ‘legend landscapes’ as sites of pilgrimage where otherworldly events are said to have occurred and spiritual presences (and absences) still dwell. The study is undertaken from the ‘insider’ perspective of a practitioner fully immersed in these processes.

SPANISH ORIENTALISM: WASHINGTON IRVING AND THE ROMANCE OF THE MOORS by MICHAEL STEVENS Under the Direction of Denise Davidson ABSTRACT Edward Said’s description of Orientalism as a constitutive element of the modern West is one of the enduring concepts of cultural history. The Orientalism thesis begins with the observation that in the 19th century Westerners began describing the "Orient," particularly the Middle East and India, as a place that was once gloriously civilized but had declined under the influence of incompetent Islamic governments. This construction was then employed to justify Western Imperialism and the expansion of Christianity into Asia. This dissertation examines a case of Orientalism with a twist. Between 1775 and 1830 a group of Anglophone writers and artists depicted Spain as a state with a cultural trajectory similar to that described by the Orientalists. But in the Spanish case, the glorious past was the age of the Islamic Moors who had ruled parts of the Iberian Peninsula from 700 until 1492, while the current Christian rulers were the backwards and religiously intolerant impediments to progress.

It is over twenty years since the death of Washington Irving removed that per- sonal presence which is always a powerful, and sometimes the sole, stimulus to the sale of an author's books, and which strongly affects the contemporary judgment of their merits. It is nearly a century since his birth, which was almost coeval with that of the Republic, for it took place the year the British troops evacuated the city of New York, and only a few months before General Washington marched in at the head of the Continental army and took possession of the metropolis. For fifty years Irving charmed and instructed the American people, and was the author who held, on the whole, the first place in their affections.

Although the true nature of both the Headless Horseman and Ichabod's disappearance that night are left open to interpretation, the story implies that the Horseman was really Brom an extremely agile rider in disguise, and suggests that Crane survived the fall from Gunpowder and immediately fled Sleepy Hollow in horror, never to return but to prosper elsewhere, or perhaps was killed by Brom himself.

Copyright © 2002 by The Newark Public Library Introduction ewark has different connotations to different people. N America’s third oldest major city evokes images of a 17th century Puritan settlement, an 18th century farm town, a 19th century industrial and commercial center and a 20th century metropolis dealing with all the complexities of a modern and changing world. Newark has hosted a dozen major immigrant ethnic groups and contributed outstanding men and women to varied fields of endeavor. Its sons and daughters have helped weave part of the American mosaic. From its very beginning Newark has valued the printed word. Robert Treat carried books with him up the Passaic River to that tiny settlement long ago, and a variety of mercantile libraries preceded the 19th century Newark Library Association. The present Newark Public Library was established in 1888 and opened its present structure as one of the City’s first important public buildings in 1901. Soon it was filled with a wealth of information for both the curious and the serious. The purpose of this publication is to bring to you some names of writers associated with Newark who have produced books, short stories, plays, monographs, and poetry as well as periodicals and newspaper columns and articles.
