Ichabod, the ever faithful disciple of the great Cotton Mather and hopeful victor in the battle for the Love of Katrina Van Tassel, is unamused by these folk legends and braves the odds in order to win the favor of his lovely lady. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales little bit slow in the beginning. Washington Irving likes to paint the scene very vividly for his readers. He also tends to use a lot of anecdotes in his writing. But the older English style that it is written in is beautiful and adds to the subtle reminder that this is a classic of American literature. I loved this book. I can't believe it took me this long to read it but I'm glad I finally did. View 2 comments. Oct 11, Niki nikilovestoread rated it it was amazing Shelves: classicsshort-stories. Overall, I really enjoyed the collection of short stories in the Barnes and Noble Leatherbound edition. There were a few duds that were not very good, but most of the stories were a lot of fun. This was my first time reading Washington Irving's short stories. I'm going to have to look for some of his other work. First off, I would like to note that The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales rating is a reflection The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales both Irving's work and that of the compilers. The writing would have warranted perhaps something slightly over four stars, but the edition itself is something of a drawback. More on that to come. Being a somewhat immortal and transcendentally quasi-present being, I have no particular culture of reference. That being said, I am most proficient in the rather illogical language of English, which both delights and confuses me. I have First off, I would like to note that this rating is a reflection of both Irving's work and that of the compilers. I have, however, generally avoided historical American literature, because most of it is rubbish not to my tastes. Irving, though, is perhaps the first American writer I have actually enjoyed. I will review each of these short stories, including the titular story with the only-now-making-sense artwork on the front cover, but first I will make a brief note on the collection itself. Having perused Irving's work, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales would agree that the story selection is excellent, but its aptitude is overshadowed by some strangely blatant errors in spelling, mechanics, and capitalization that riddle the text. Some perceived errors I researched and now realize to be intentional who knew yclept was a word? Random word capitalization is a bit off- putting, and substitution of smaller words like "is" where "in" should clearly be is easily overlooked but quite distracting to some pedantic readers. 4. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow 4. Ichabod Crane, as I have now learned, is far from an imposing or foreboding figure, despite his haunted-sounding name. It is, in turn, both hilarious and terrifying. The cabbage farmer is an interesting character for his remarkable unremarkableness, but after a while I just wanted the story to be over already so I could get to the next one. The narrative slightly resembles Rip Van Winkle but is far more entertaining in setting and execution. Jan 21, Rob rated it liked it Shelves: the-classics. I originally picked this book up for Halloween, I did an aloud reading of Sleepy Hollow for my friends and kept reading from there. I don't quite know if this collection is all of Irving's work I doubt it though or just a collection of his spooky ghost stories. Either way the collection I read was a mixed bag. I loved several stories, usually they were the ones everyone has heard of, stories like "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", "" The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales "Rip Van Winkle", several other stori I originally picked this book up for Halloween, I did an aloud reading of Sleepy Hollow for my friends and kept reading from there. I loved several stories, usually they were the ones everyone has heard of, stories like "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", "The Devil and Tom Walker" or "Rip Van Winkle", several other stories were surprisingly good. I really enjoyed "Strange Stories by a Nervous Gentleman" in particular. It was a great sort of anthology of Ghost stories told around a group of friends. I enjoyed it particularly because it was so well written that I found myself lost in them, especially the last story. I enjoyed "The Guest from Gibbet Island" as well, it was a well written story about a haunted Island, Pirates, and a mysterious vistor who no one quite knows where he is from. Several themes came up in his stories that I thought were both interesting and at times monotonous. For one, Irving has many stories that take place in Europe or in Spain. I learned later he was an ambassador to Spain which explains why he felt the need to write so much about it. He often writes melodramatically, of starcrossed lovers and cavaliers, men who are slaves to their passions and act out of sheer emotion bound by honor or love and who die due to extreme guilt or shame at their misdeeds. Irving seems to believe in a divine justice in the supernatural elements of his stories. Something that haunts men who disrupt the social norms of society, men who don't adhere to the standards of the church or of god. There is also a fair amount written about men The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales have nervous dispositions, and are subject to terror fits that, in some cases, literally kill them. I think Icabod Crane is the most famous example of this. Sometimes I got tired of his European stories, there were several in this anthology I The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales not finish. Mostly because it requires you to be extremely invested in the politics or religious makeup of Europe in the 17 and s. He writes of now obscure characters in European history and depends upon your willingness to listen to the stories of a certain count or marquise or the history of a certain duchy. It just wasn't for me. Overall because The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales was a mixed bag of wonderful stories and DNFs I decided to give it 3 stars. If you are a fan of Romantic Literature I don't think The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales European stories will effect you the same way they did me. I think fans of the period or of Romantic Literature should be able to get through the more monotonous stories if they try. If you love Ghost Stories, I think this book will suit you just fine, infact I think you may love it. However if you do not like reading dated writing or Romantic Literature then stay away, or else you too may be haunted by boredom and die of a nervous fit. Jan 18, Matthew Werenich added it. It paints a wonderful picture of a late 18th century small town in America right at harvesttime. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales by Washington Irving

Along with Irving's companion piece " Rip Van Winkle ", "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is among the earliest examples of American fiction with enduring popularity, especially during Halloween because of a character known as the believed to be a Hessian soldier who was decapitated by a cannonball in battle. From the listless repose of the place, and the peculiar character of its inhabitants, who are descendants from the original Dutch settlers, this sequestered glen has long been known by name of Sleepy Hollow A drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land, and to pervade the very atmosphere. The story is set in in the countryside around the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town historical The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales, New Yorkin a secluded glen known as Sleepy Hollow. Sleepy Hollow is renowned for its ghosts and the haunting atmosphere that pervades the imaginations of its inhabitants and visitors. Some residents say this town was bewitched during the early days of the Dutch settlement, while others claim that the mysterious atmosphere was caused by an old Native American chief, the "wizard of his tribe The "Legend" relates the tale of Ichabod Cranea lean, lanky and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of wealthy farmer Baltus Van Tassel. Ichabod Crane, a Yankee and an outsider, sees marriage to Katrina as a means of procuring Van Tassel's extravagant wealth. Bones, the local hero, unable to force Ichabod into a physical showdown to settle things, plays a series of pranks on the superstitious schoolmaster. The tension among the three continues for some time, and is soon brought to a head. On a placid autumn night, the ambitious Crane attends a harvest party at the Van Tassels' homestead. He dances, partakes in the feast, and listens to ghostly legends told by Brom and the locals, but his true aim is to propose to Katrina after the guests leave. His intentions, however, are ill-fated. After having failed to secure Katrina's hand, Ichabod rides home on his temperamental horse named Gunpowder "heavy-hearted and crestfallen" through the woods between Van Tassel's farmstead and the farmhouse in Sleepy Hollow where he is quartered at the time. As he passes several purportedly haunted spots, his active imagination is engorged by the ghost The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales told at Baltus' harvest party. Unsettled by his fellow traveler's eerie size and silence, the teacher is horrified to discover that his companion's head is not on his shoulders, but on his saddle. In a frenzied race to the bridge adjacent to the Old Dutch Burying Groundwhere the Hessian is said to "vanish, according to rule, in a flash of fire and brimstone" before crossing it, Ichabod rides for his life, desperately goading Gunpowder down the Hollow. However, while Crane and Gunpowder are able to cross the bridge ahead of the ghoul, to Crane's horror it rears its horse and hurls its severed head directly at Ichabod. The schoolmaster attempts to dodge, but is too late; the missile strikes his head and sends him tumbling headlong into the dust. The next morning, Ichabod has mysteriously disappeared from the area, leaving Katrina to later marry Brom Bones, who was said "to look exceedingly The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales whenever the story of Ichabod was related". Indeed, the only relics of the schoolmaster's flight are his discarded hat, Gunpowder's trampled saddle, and a mysterious shattered pumpkin. Although the true nature of both the Headless Horseman and Ichabod's disappearance that night are left open to interpretation, the story implies that the Horseman was really Brom an extremely agile rider in disguise, and suggests that Crane survived the fall from Gunpowder and immediately fled Sleepy Hollow in horror, never to return but to prosper elsewhere, or perhaps was killed by Brom himself. Irving's narrator concludes the story, however, by stating that the old Dutch wives continue to promote the belief The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales Ichabod was "spirited away by supernatural means", and a legend develops around The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales disappearance and sightings of his melancholy The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales. In a Postscript sometimes unused in certain editionsthe narrator states the circumstances in which he heard the story from an old gentleman "at a Corporation meeting at the ancient city of Manhattoes ", who didn't "believe one-half of it [himself]. Irving wrote The Sketch Book during a tour of Europe, and parts of the tale may also be traced to European origins. Headless horsemen were staples of Northern European storytelling, featuring in German, Irish e. Usually viewed as omens of ill-fortune for those who chose to disregard their apparitions, these specters found their victims in proud, scheming persons and characters with hubris and arrogance. During the height of the American Revolutionary WarIrving writes that the country surrounding Tarry Town "was one of those highly-favored places which abound with chronicle and great men. The British and American line had run near it during the war; it had, therefore, been the scene of marauding, and infested with refugees, cow-boys, and all kinds of border chivalry. The Americans were fortified north of Peekskillleaving Westchester County a mile stretch of scorched and desolated no-man's land, vulnerable to outlaws, raiders, and vigilantes. Tompkinsmet an army captain named Ichabod Crane in Sackets Harbor, during an inspection tour of fortifications in Irving may have patterned the character in "The Legend" after Jesse Merwinwho taught at the local schoolhouse in Kinderhookfurther north along the Hudson Riverwhere Irving spent several months in Washington Irving had stayed with her family for a short time, asked permission to use her name, and loosely base the character on her. He told her and her family he liked to give his characters the names of people he had met. Both stories are often paired together in books and other representations, and both are included in surveys of early American literature and Romanticism. There is a stop located either side of the road so that North- and South-bound traffic is able to stop. Fire Station 59 in Artondale, Washington has adopted the nickname of "Sleepy Hollow", as the station is located in a remote, quiet subdivision within Pierce County.
