MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2012 FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Going back to back in the NRL competition has proven too big a task for the defending Premiers each year since 1992, but I can proudly say that in 2012, Geoff Toovey and the boys gave it a red hot go. Despite a host of difficulties, including pre-season disruptions, travelling to the UK for the World Club Challenge, injuries, suspensions and off field distractions, the team, led by Co-Captains Jamie Lyon and Jason King, rallied together magnificently to finish in the Top 4, falling only one game short of another Grand Final appearance after defeat by eventual 2012 Premiers, the Melbourne Storm. Whilst we may not have achieved our ultimate goal of successfully defending our 2011 title, we should not lose sight of just how difficult it is to remain near the top of the NRL competition each year. Accordingly, we should all be extremely proud of what was still a very successful 2012 season for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. In his first year as Head Coach, Geoff Toovey did a fantastic job despite a less than ideal preparation and I am sure he is itching to get into 2013, knowing the experience of his first year under his belt will stand him in good stead for the challenges that lie ahead. With the nucleus of the side being retained long term, particularly our young halves, Keiran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans, we can all be justifiably confident that a 9th premiership is well within our reach in coming seasons. -

Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them. -

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2011 FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Premiers. That is all that needs to be said to sum up a magnificent 2011 season. Congratulations to Co-Captains Jamie Lyon and Jason King and all the players and to Des Hasler and all the coaching and support staff. Congratulations also to David Perry and the office staff at Narrabeen for all the behinds the scenes work they do that make it possible for the Football department to be successful. Congratulations and thank you also to the Board of the Sea Eagles, and our co-owners in the Sea Eagles, the Penn family and Quantum, without whom this premiership could not have been achieved. Your Club, the mighty Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles once again stamped itself as the best Rugby League Club in Australia, not only winning its second NRL Premiership in only 4 years, but by becoming the only Club to have won at least 1 Premiership in each of the last 5 decades. Such a long tradition of success is testament to the strength and character of our great Club and our relentless drive for success. Superstar players, even Immortals, have come and gone. Coaches have come and gone. Administrators and Board Members have come and gone, but what always remains is the Manly- Warringah Sea Eagles Club, something much greater than the sum of the individual parts. So we look forward to 2012, with local junior, Life Member and Club legend, Geoff Toovey leading the charge towards another milestone, the first back to back premierships since 1992-93. -

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2013 FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT It is with great pride that I present this Annual Report 2013 to Football Club Members. In 2013, the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles have once more enjoyed a level of success that is the envy of other clubs in the NRL competition. While many of the so-called experts did not predict the Sea Eagles to make the finals, let alone the Grand Final, Geoff Toovey, his entire coaching staff, recruitment team and of course the players, proved them all wrong. I congratulate them all for an outstanding achievement in 2013. The strong winning culture that has been the hallmark of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles over many decades has been maintained and strengthened in 2013. Preserving and protecting this heritage is the central focus of the current Manly-Warringah Football Club Board. The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles has a proud tradition, with the local junior league being established in 1932. We have played at Brookvale Oval since the Club joined the competition in 1947, played in the same colours and with the same name. Although the Club has been a privatised entity for ten years, the Manly-Warringah Football Club and its members hold an important stake in the Club, that is, the preference share which governs where the team plays, its name, logo and colours. Under the current Board’s tenure this heritage and tradition has been fiercely protected on behalf of Football Club Members. And while there are times this puts us at odds with other powerful and vested interests and has earned us unfair media criticism, we make no apologies for standing up for these important things. -

THE POST-BRONCOS BRISBANE RUGBY LEAGUE COMPETITION Club football in Brisbane from 1988 to 2019 From the Brisbane premiership to the Queensland Cup THE POST-BRONCOS BRISBANE RUGBY LEAGUE COMPETITION Club football in Brisbane from 1988 to 2019 The following is a collection of appendices giving a brief history of the local BRL competition and the Queensland Cup following the birth of the Broncos in 1988. They were originally written with the hope to have them included in Steve Haddan’s book “Our Game” covering the history of the Brisbane Rugby League up to 1987. Due to the costs of adding extra pages they were not included. The 3 appendices included in this document include: • The BRL competition from 1988 to 1997 (the last 2 years were just a final series) • The Queensland Cup from 1996 to the present (2019) • A list of all grand final scores from 1909 to the present for the BRL, State League, Queensland Cup and the State Championship as well as a listing of the years that each club has won a premiership. 2 APPENDIX ONE THE POST BRONCOS BRISBANE RUGBY LEAGUE COMPETITION When the Brisbane Broncos and the Gold Coast Giants entered the NSWRL competition in 1988 it marked a point of no return for the Brisbane Rugby League competition. The BRL went from being a top tier to a second tier competition much to the disappointment of many diehard Queensland rugby league fans. Before the entry of the Brisbane Broncos the top national talent was shared between the Brisbane and Sydney competitions with more playing in the Sydney competition thanks to the bigger money offered by clubs that could benefit from poker machine profits which weren't introduced in Queensland until 1992. -

TRIBUTE TO ROBERT GOULD Mr JOHN ROBERTSON (Blacktown—Leader of the Opposition) [10.00 a.m.], by leave: I acknowledge the students in the public gallery from St Andrews Primary School at Marayong. On behalf of the Opposition I acknowledge the passing of Bob Gould; a great contributor to this city's intellectual and political capital over many decades, who died suddenly on 22 May 2011. This House is a place of robust debate and differing· views. We often find ourselves in agreement on matters but more often in disagreement—sometimes quite passionate and heated disagreement. But regardless of which point on the political spectrum we come from I think we all agree that all points are needed. We agree that diverse views, contrary views, majority and minority views are all equally important contributors to the healthy and robust debate that underpins our democracy. We should never silence in this place the dissenting view but rather allow it to have its voice. There would not be one member of this House who can say that he or she has not experienced moments of being in the minority and yet was afforded the respect and right to state his or her case. Bob Gould was far more than the proprietor of the business that bears his name; he was also a great contributor to keeping this principle front and centre in the life of this city. -

Photos courtesy of www.photosport.nz Predictable, But I Don’t Care By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan HE KIWIS walloped Scotland, and everyone knew they would, even if last time we faced them we did Tdraw. That was then, this is now. We scored a staggering 14 tries as we blew Scotland away, three each to Peta Hiku and Te Maire Martin. Even with a triple each, they did not get the headlines, because Shaun Johnson kicked nine goals and added a try for a22 point haul that made him the Kiwis top scorer of all time, with 175 points, overtaking some bloke called Matthew Ridge, who managed 168. I thought we were pretty bloody good across the park actually, although, let’s face it, the opposition was not up to much. The Kiwis scored an unanswered 28 points in the first half, then cut loose in the second. Johnson’s 22 points, added to his 14-point haul in the 38-8 victory over Samoa, gives him an impressive 36 for the tournament. The stats tell it all really, and they are what you would expect when one side is so dominant, the Kiwis with 196 runs against Scotland’s 84; 2079metres to 636; 31 offloads to six.
