MANLY-WARRINGAH FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2019 MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2019

2 FOREWORD TO THE REPORT

Welcome to the 2019 Annual Report of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club (MWRLFC). We produce this report each year as our contribution to the history and record keeping of the Club and the Sea Eagles. The MWRLFC in its current and previous form (the Manly-Warringah District Rugby League Football Club) has produced an Annual Report every year since 1947. By producing this report, we do not purport to represent ourselves as the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Limited (MWSE Ltd) which is a separate legal entity administering and funding the Team. We sincerely thank the current private owners of the Sea Eagles - the Penn family, Andrew Michael and Gary Wolman - who continue to financially support the Sea Eagles. What should not be forgotten or ignored however is that the MWRLFC is also a minority owner of the MWSE Ltd. That means that MWRLFC members also have an ownership stake in the MWSE Ltd, the Sea Eagles. The MWRLFC holds the Preference Share in the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Ltd which gives our members, through their right to vote, determination over the Team’ name, colours and its home ground, as well as two voting positions on the MWSE Ltd Board which has seven members. That’s why it’s important that the MWRLFC remains a strong for our members. Our aim this year was to grow our membership, which we did successfully, through the specially designed, individually numbered MWRLFC membership . In 2020 we plan to add to that by including another personalised item to our membership offering. We need our membership numbers to be strong so our place within the Sea Eagles structure and the voice of our members (Sea Eagles fans) cannot be ignored should there ever be further, major changes to the ownership or governance of the Sea Eagles. Having said that, we also urge our members wherever possible and affordable, to also be members of the Sea Eagles. Along with attendance figures at home games, NRL membership numbers are a strong indicator of a Club’s health. This report has been largely compiled from publicly available data and our own records. Photography credits to the Sea Eagles and historical records. The production of the Report is done on a voluntary basis and the cost of printing the Report is funded by the MWRLFC through the membership income.

The Board.

3 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Once again, it’s an honour as the Chairman of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club (MWRLFC) to present the 2019 Annual Report to you, our loyal members.

After the disappointments of the previous year, 2019 was a much better year for the Sea Eagles family, encompassing the Sea Eagles, the MWRLFC and the Leagues Club. The team enjoyed more success on the field, particularly at our spiritual home, (Lottoland). The MWRLFC increased its membership, bringing back former members and attracting new ones. Our other key partner, the Leagues Club, after some tough times, has also enjoyed a recovery in what is a challenging economic climate.

Des Hasler, returning to his rightful home with the Sea Eagles, led what many of the so-called rugby league experts declared a weak roster, into the second week of the finals; a remarkable turnaround from narrowly missing the Club’s first wooden spoon in 2018. When Des re-joined the Club he talked about the fact that had the team stopped just one try in each of the 2018 games, that it would have been a different story. So clearly defence was the area most identified for improvement. Des achieved that, turning the worst defensive record of all clubs in 2018, to the fifth best in 2019.

We had some great, tough wins throughout the year. Who can forget the thrillers against the Rabbitohs in round 4 and the Storm in round 19 and the two nail-biting wins over grand finalists the Raiders in rounds 7 and 23. The away win against Cronulla in round 10 was remarkable for the fact we were without DCE and , debuted outstanding young in the five eighth position alongside in the halfback role and comprehensively outplayed them.

Most importantly, we regained “the Fortress”, winning eight of the 11 games played there this year, including our first home semi-since the magical 2008 season.

As well as the vastly improved team effort, there were also some fantastic individual achievements across our roster. As well as once more serving as captain of the Sea Eagles, DCE captained the State of Origin (SOO) team throughout the series and was Vice-Captain of the Kangaroos in Tests and the Nines tournament, a great honour that speaks volumes of his personal leadership qualities. He also played every Club game throughout the SOO series. He is a credit to our Club. Jake and Tom Trbojevic also represented the series winners, NSW, in SOO 2019 as well as Jake representing for the Kangaroos and the Prime Minister’s XIII, along with fellow local junior Brad Parker. Several other players from our roster also represented their nations as listed in this report, congratulations to them all.

Our “Rookie of the Year” joined our Club at the start of 2019. Reuben was a Gerringong Lions junior who had been with the St George Club in their under 20s and NSW Cup sides and joined the Sea Eagles hoping to secure a first grade spot. He finished the season having played 26 first grade games, taking honours as the Club’s leading point scorer, leading try scorer and representing Australia in the Prime Minister’s XIII, the Nines and the U23 . A remarkable personal achievement.

Had the Club not once more been hit with a series of injuries in the crucial part of the season (and Jake not been sin binned in the final ten minutes off the semi-final against Souths), I believe there is every chance we could have made the grand final.

Injuries to Tom Trbojevic, Joel Thompson, and towards the back end of the season had a significant impact, but having said that, they were most ably replaced by Brendan Elliot, and Corey Waddell. Two players made their first-grade debuts in the finals rounds – and Haumole Olakau’atu – both performed extremely well and are real prospects for the future. It would be remiss not to mention the great efforts throughout the whole season of our two front rowers and Addin Fonua-Blake. They led the team from the front all year and their impact on the team’s success should not be underestimated. Also, developed well alongside DCE in the five eight role, local junior Brad Parker and excelled in the centres, especially towards the end of the season and we enjoyed the big hits from crowd favourite , which went viral across the sporting world. Young Manase Fainu proved himself as an integral part of the team, backing up for popular and ever reliable Api Koroisau.

The re-signings of many of our current squad, including of course Jake and Tom Trbojevic, now joined by their “little”

4 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT (continued...) brother Ben, along with Joel Thompson, Marty Taupau, Addin Fonua-Blake, Dylan Walker, Jorge Taufua, Brad Parker and , gives all Sea Eagles’ fans reasons to be very optimistic for the future.

Sadly, we also farewell some players – Api Koroisau, , Kane Elgey, , and . We thank them and wish them all the best in their future playing careers or retirement.

While it was not a good year for our NSW Cup or sides, we congratulate the Harold Matthews and SG Balls sides for their performances in the junior representatives competitions which saw the SG Ball side make the Grand Final, only to lose narrowly to the Steelers and the Matthews team make the second week of the finals. There are several highly talented young players to keep an eye on for the future.

Off the field, things are also looking up. The Club has received funding from federal and state governments to allow it to build the $32 million Centre of Excellence which will not only include high performance, state of the art training and rehabilitation facilities but also an additional 3,000 undercover seats on the northern side. This will be a great improvement to our home ground although more funding is still required to bring the whole stadium up to standard. While , which joined the competition in the same year as Manly-Warringah is now enjoying its third stadium thanks to the largesse of state and federal governments, northern beaches fans are still battling with substandard facilities. The question remains, why do our fans deserve less? We are however encouraged by the recent remarks by incoming NRL Chairman Peter ’landys who supports upgrades of suburban grounds, with Brookvale Oval as his priority. Watch this space.

We also welcome new CEO, Stephen Humphreys. Stephen went through a rigorous selection process to be appointed to the position and comes with a fantastic rugby league pedigree as a former player and administrator, as well as very high level professional qualifications, having worked as the head of global sales for British Airways in for a number of years. We wish Stephen all the best in the role.

The MWRLFC has worked hard to ensure the Sea Eagles family is strong and connected. Board members David O’ Donnell and Julie Sibraa have joined Alan Thompson on the Board of the Manly-Warringah Leagues Club, with Dave taking on the role of Chairman and Julie as Deputy Chairman. Julie and I continue to serve cooperatively on the Board of the Sea Eagles as the MWRLFC representatives. Dave is also closely involved with the district junior league and two of his sons Angus and Daniel both played for the junior representative teams.

As always, I thank my fellow Board members - Alan Thompson, David O’Donnell, Nick Curulli, Scotty Wilcox and Julie Sibraa for their efforts throughout the year. I thank Nick Curulli for his work in getting the individually numbered members caps produced and sent out. It was a lot of hard work, and as members are sometimes unaware, Nick’s work, and all the work done by MWRLFC Board members, including serving on the other Boards, is done on a purely voluntary basis.

Last, but certainly not least, thank you to all our members. Your support and continuing membership is greatly appreciated. Without you we would be an organisation in name only. Your membership and enthusiasm continues a long and proud history we will always fight to preserve and protect.

I wish you a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you next year at Brookvale Oval. GO MANLY!

6 SEA EAGLES CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S MESSAGE

It’s a great honour to write this message as the recently arrived Chief Executive Officer of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. Manly is a proud and successful Club with a strong winning culture that is the envy of many other NRL clubs. It was the irresistible opportunity to join this Club with its rich history and heritage that has drawn me back into the game. I’m very conscious of the fact that some giants have served in the role I now occupy, including Doug Daley, Frank Stanton and of course the great Ken Arthurson with whom I am fortunate to have a strong personal connection.

I am also extremely fortunate to join the Sea Eagles at such an exciting time. is back in charge of the team, preparing them for the 2020 season after a vastly improved 2019. A new $32 million Centre of Excellence is being built at the Club’s spiritual home Lottoland/Brookvale Oval and I am most encouraged by the positive support being offered by Commission Chairman, Peter V’landys, to ensure our long term future and much needed upgrades of suburban grounds with ours being at the top of his priority list.

There are always challenges, of course, in running a rugby league franchise. We operate in an extremely competitive environment and we must maintain a strong financial position in order to survive and thrive. We rely on support from our corporate partners and our loyal Sea Eagles members as well as the personal generosity of our private owners. We are very grateful for the tremendous support we receive.

Most importantly, I am looking forward to meeting our Sea Eagles and MWRLFC members. I know that many of you have been members for decades and more. It is a fact that you are the most passionate members in the game, another compelling reason to be part of this great cause – the mighty Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

I wish all MWRLFC members a safe and happy Christmas and a 2020 full of memorable Sea Eagles victories to celebrate!

Stephen Humphreys CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

KEN “ARKO” ARTHURSON - 90 NOT OUT

On the 1st of October 2019, Club Co-Patron and Sea Eagles legend, Ken Arthurson AM, turned 90. We all know him as “the Godfather” of our great Club, and it is fair to say we can attribute much of our success as a Club to Ken personally, whether it be as a player, a coach, but especially as an administrator. He was the Secretary of the Club for twenty years. His negotiating skills were second to none and led to the signings of key players who would later feature in the Club’s first and subsequent grand final victories.

In honour of Ken who is MWRLFC Life Member number 1, we featured him on our membership card this year. We wish him and his wife Barbara, all the best for many years to come.

Happy 90th birthday Arko!

7 HEAD COACH’S REPORT

Reflecting on the 2019 season has me excited about what 2020 has to offer. Firstly, a very important thank you to all the members and fans who supported us throughout the year, attended games at Lottoland and away and above all else, believed in this team.

The players worked very hard and remained committed from day 1 of pre-season through to the final minute of our elimination final.

Numerous players had outstanding seasons personally – A handful are mentioned below, but to be honest I could have written some wonderful things about every player that played NRL this year.

Reuben Garrick in his debut season went on to play representative football with selection in the Australian Nines squad, PM’s XIII and Australian U23’s. I still feel his biggest achievement was to play every NRL game of the season on the back of finishing as the club’s leading try scorer and point scorer. It doesn’t come much better on debut.

Daly Cherry-Evans had yet another great season. He captained the club and the state of QLD, backing up to play a very important role in our Rd 13 win against the Cowboys. This, just 3 days after State of Origin 1, following five weeks on the sidelines with injury. An outstanding effort.

Jorge Taufua was a model of consistency throughout the entire year, highlighted by several unbeliev- able hits that will feature in highlight reels for a very long time.

Jake Trbojevic just keeps on keeping on, winning his third player of the year award at the tender age of just 25. His presence on the field is an enormous plus for the team. His and brother Tom’s re-signing is a wonderful achievement for the club, where the best is definitely yet to come.

Manase Fainu in his first full season of NRL played some outstanding football culminating in him being

8 HEAD COACH’S REPORT (CONTINUED) shortlisted in the number 14 of the year at the .

Special mentions to Addin Fonua-Blake, Brendan Elliot and Curtis Sironen who each took their game to another level. Again, the best is yet to come for these three!

Once we got to understand each other, we put together some great performances, including our Round 3 demolition of the Warriors in Christchurch and Round 20 win over the Knights at home. But for mine, our golden point victory over the Storm in was one for the archives and will forever remain etched in my memory as one of the club’s greatest ever wins.

Finishing as I began, there is plenty to be excited about in 2020. The players are already well into the pre-season, training hard and laying the platform for the months ahead. We look forward to sharing with them with you.

Sincerely

Des Hasler HEAD COACH

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2019

15 GOLDEN EAGLES REPORT 2019

What a season! Sea Eagles fans could feel the anticipation at the start of the year even though the vast majority of ‘experts’ tipped Manly to be the 2019 Wooden Spooners. With the return of Des Hasler as coach along with a host of Golden Eagles including Donny Singe, , , Noel ‘Crusher’ Cleal, Chad Randall and Brett Stewart the platform had been laid. After an expected slow start the team kicked into gear and there were some mighty moments during a season full of memorable moments. Beating Melbourne in Melbourne and in Brisbane and knocking Cronulla out of the finals whilst decimated with injuries were just a few of the highlights. Eventually injuries caught up with the team and a valiant last effort against the Rabbitohs in the Semi- Final wrapped up a fantastic season which made Manly fans proud of their team.

Of course one of the big highlights of the season was the Round 20 match vs at Brookvale which was this year’s Golden Eagles Day. After some sensational days in previous seasons, this day lived up to expectations with over 150 past Manly players turning out for the annual event. A slight change this year saw the fans being allowed into the Lyons’ Den with the Golden Eagles before the march to Brookvale Oval. The smiles on the faces of the fans and their heroes told the story as memorabilia was signed, a few drinks were consumed and stories were told. The atmosphere in the Lyons’ Den was electric. Then came the Golden Eagles now traditional march to Brookvale Oval where they performed a Guard of Honour for the team to enter the field. Fans once again mingled with their heroes as they all watched Manly beat Newcastle on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Each season the Golden Eagles day just gets better and better and never fails to impress, with plans already -un derway to turn next year’s event into a Golden Eagles Weekend! Yes, that’s right - Weekend! With the help of new sponsors Nicco and Wormald, next season we will be making the Golden Eagles Reunion a weekend event and will be aiming for over 200 former legends being back at Brookvale for the game and other activities over the weekend, with plenty of activities for the fans to join in with the players. More details to follow in upcoming newsletters and if you do know any former players and are in contact with them, please pass their details to us so we can keep in touch with them and make sure they get their invites to join what is becoming a must do annual event for former greats and the fans.

Thanks for your support in 2019 with next year already looking like it will be bigger and better both on and off the field for the Sea Eagles and the Golden Eagles. Have a happy and safe off season and strap yourself in for what promises to be an awesome 2020 season.

Mark Bryant CHAIRMAN

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2019

16 JUNIOR LEAGUE REPORT 2019 On behalf of the Board of the Manly Warringah District Junior League, I am pleased to present this Report for the 2019 season.

This year we had 2,012 players registered down from 2,066 in 2018. There was an increase in female registrations from 90 in 2018 to 128 in 2019. Note the total number of female registrations in 2017 was 37. In addition to this there were 73 female player registrations in the female tag competitions. There were 143 teams in 2019 compared to 152 in 2018 in our age groups from Under 6 to A Grade. In addition to the 143 teams there were 5 female tag teams, representing a total of 148 teams.

We only had five local A Grade teams with no teams from North Sydney, therefore it was decided to join the Open Age Sydney Conference Competitions. With Manly teams Premiers (Cromer) and the runners-up (Avalon) in the Gold Division and Premiers in the Silver Division (Belrose). Cromer defeated Avalon 15-14 in extra time in the Gold Division Grand Final at Lake Park and Belrose defeated Greenacre 32-24 in the Silver Division Grand Final.

Many of our teams played in combined competitions conducted by the NSWRL. Thank you to NSWRL, especially Michael Hanratty for the administration of these competitions during 2019.

I would like to congratulate all the teams that qualified for the Final Series, from semi – finals onwards.

All our competitions rely heavily on the huge contribution made by Club Volunteers who give up their time to help in some way i.e. Set up the fields and later take them back down, run the canteen, work on the barbecue, clean up the grounds and change rooms, coach, manage, perform first aid duties, act as sports trainers, ground managers and Committee Members of our various clubs. I thank them on behalf of the players and the District JRL. I would also like to thank the referees for their contribution to our District JRL.

It is also important to highlight the financial assistance provided by the Manly Warringah Leagues Club which has supported the MWDJRL for many years. I would like to thank the Leagues Club Board for their contribution and assistance including use of Club facilities for our fortnightly meetings. If you are not yet a member of the Leagues Club then I ask you to join and take advantage of its facilities and to show our support for the Club’s continued contribution to junior rugby league in our District. The continued financial support of the Manly Leagues Club is paramount to our District JRL.

The Bendigo Bank at Freshwater is our other major sponsor and I wish to document our appreciation for their continued financial support.

A huge thank you to the members of the MWDJRL Board and Executive who also give up their valuable time in running our various competitions. All of these people volunteer at their own junior league Club and also find the time and energy to contribute at the District Level. I would also like to thank each of these people for their support and counsel during 2019.

The NSWRL provided administrative support for the MWDJRL with Ben James the Club & Competitions Co-ordinator for the Northern Region and Lauren Coltman in the role of Junior League Administrator of MWDJRL. Both Ben and Lauren provided valuable contributions throughout the year and we look forward to continue to work with Ben and Lauren leading into the next season and through-out the 2020 season. Our appreciation is extended to Stuart Stanton and the NSWRL for their support of our District JRL by providing the administrative resources of both Ben and Lauren. Lauren commenced her position after the season had commenced in April but soon proved an invaluable resource of our Junior league. We were able to achieve 100% success rate with accreditation compliance in 2019 up from 61% in 2018, this is a great result and would not have been possible without the work and persistence of Ben James.

Four clubs were awarded NSWRL Blue Shield Status in 2019, those clubs being, Mona Vale, Beacon Hill, Forestville and Cromer. Anthony Rogers from the Beacon Hill Club was awarded NSWRL Manly District Volunteer of the Year.

Our junior league continues to develop players into the top level for example in 2019: - Grand Final players Sam Verrills () and (). State of Origin players Jake Trbojevic (Manly Sea Eagles) and Tom Trbojevic (Manly Sea Eagles). International Jake Trbojevic (Australia) and Will Hopoate (Tonga), Prime Ministers 13 Clint Gutherson (Parramatta), Jake Trbojevic (Manly Sea Eagles) and Brad Parker (Manly Sea Eagles).

I would also like to thank the Junior League Development Officers for their work throughout 2019.

Thank you to David O’Donnell and his team for all their continued great work with the Junior League Development Squads. In addition to their substantial contribution to the Saturday Grand Finals.

I would also like to thank the Manly Warringah Rugby League Football Club who provide general corporate guidance and assistance when appropriate.

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and carers whom, amongst other things, get the players to home and away games and training. Thank you also to the spectators for attending games and supporting our players.

In my third year as President, I would like to thank everyone who contributed in some way to the running of the game in our District and I look forward to seeing everyone back again in 2019. Kim Hunter PRESIDENT, MANLY-WARRINGAH DISTRICT JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE
