EXHIBITION "TOUR YOUR NATIVE LAND!" LATVIA’S TOURISM PROPAGANDA IN THE 1930S" 01.01.-30.12., 11:00-17:00 (III-VII), from 01.05. 10:00-17:00 (I-VII) Artifacts and a number of other display items from several museums and the state archives describe one of life’s greatest pastimes - travel, and learning about foreign lands and people. EXHIBITION "SECRET LIFE OF ADVERTISING" 01.01.-27.08., 9:00-20:00 (I-V), 10:00-17:00 (VI-VII) The exhibition about advertising in the period between the world wars comprises several hundreds of small-sized commercials for goods and services in diferent media. In the wide array of exhibits, modern people will easily notice differences in communication culture, printing techniques and social life of the given time period that are always reflected in commercials. EXHIBITION "NATURE’S ABUNDANCE IN LATVIA – FROM THE CORAL TO THE CONIFER ROUNDHEAD" 01.03.-02.04., 10:00-17:00 (III,V-VII), 10:00-19:00 (IV) The exhibition tells about Latvia’s natural history, starting from times when the whole territory of what is now Latvia was submerged in ancient sea waters inhab- ited by corals to modern times when scientists still discover new species each year. The exhibition will show how plant and animal species gradually spread to Latvia after the end of the last ice age. Exhibition "Hyperrealism. Movement Manifestations in Latvia"

SOLO EXHIBITION BY VERA VEISA 02.03.-23.04., 11:00-18:00 (I-VII) Vera Veisa (1947) is a professional sculptor, who has created sculptures, as well as small molds and medals. While working at the Riga Porcelain Factory, she created very expressive figurines. Later, she began working with other sculpting materials - stone, bronze and fire clay. The exhibition will feature not only the artist’s well-known porcelain pieces, but also other ceramic works and sculptures. Riga Porcelain Museum

A medal serves as a memorial item for a certain historical event, social happening or movement, or to commemorate a great person - it reflects the spirit of that time, helps maintain historical facts, and each brings its own message through the ages. EXHIBITION "HYPERREALISM. MOVEMENT MANIFESTATIONS IN LATVIA" 03.03.-21.05., 12:00-18:00 (II,III,V), 12:00-20:00 (IV), 12:00-17:00 (VI,VII) The exhibition Hyperrealism. Movement Manifestations in Latvia looks at the ar- rival and development of hyperrealism in Latvia over the course of half a century, encompassing the period from 1967 to 2017. The peak of hyperrealism in Latvia in the 1970s coincided with the propagation of photorealism – a movement orig- inating in the USA – in Europe, where it acquired the name – hyperrealism. Yet other names are also used for the movement: superrealism, cold realism, radical realism, sharp focus realism. Hyperrealism in figurative art depicts reality in a precise and detailed manner and imitates the particularities of photography. National Museum of Art exhibition space "Arsenāls"

EXHIBITION "NATIONAL DESIGN AWARD OF LATVIA 2017" 04.03.-09.04., 11:00-17:00 (II, IV, V, VI, VII), 11:00-19:00 (III) The Museum of Decorative Art and Design will display the 20 best works of the National Design Award of Latvia. The National Design Award of Latvia is an annual national design industry competition with a goal to identify, evaluate and promote the best accomplishments of Latvian designers, thus facilitating long-term development and growth of the Latvian design sector. EXHIBITION "CAMERAS" 08.03.-14.05., 10:00-18:00 (II-VII) Society during the Art Nouveau period, as well as the beliefs and development of the arts at the time, is inseparably connected to scientific discoveries and the technology of the time, including the development of photography. EXHIBITION "THE TREE IS THINKING!" 17.03.-23.04., 11:00-17:00 (II, IV, V, VI, VII), 11:00-19:00 (III) The woodworking design department at the Riga School of Design and Art is organizing the exhibition The Tree is Thinking!, where practical objects made at the department in recent years will be displayed, with the aim of showing the wider audience the tasks and results of these promising woodworking and furniture design specialists. NEW EXHIBITION "THE WORDS OF THE WOMAN", FEATURING THE WORKS OF ALEKSANDRA BEĻCOVA 21.03.-02.09., 11:00-19:00 (II), 11:00-18:00 (III-VI), from 01.05. 11:00- 18:00 (II, III, V, VI), 11:00-19:00 (IV) 2017 marks the 125th anniversary of the artist Aleksandra Beļcova (1892-1981). To celebrate this event, the Romans Suta and Aleksandra Beļcova Museum is organizing three exhibitions - all of them dedicated to the artist, where visitors will be able to get acquainted in more detail with her work. During the anniversary year, the museum will feature exhibitions of only Beļcova’s work, with a separate exhibition featuring works from her spouse Romans Suta (1896-1944) also being organized. OSVALDS ZVEJSALNIEKS’ EXHIBITION "LATGALE. LITHUANIA" 22.03.-22.04., 11:00-18:00 (II-VI) Osvalds Zvejsalnieks is one of the most renowned figures in Latvia’s cultural and social life and an artist who has been following and advancing the classical tradition in Latvian painting. Landscapes and scenes of Latgale’s small towns like Ludza, Krāslava, Dagda, Viļāni and Balvi, among others, are the dominant motifs of his paintings. Most probably this choice of themes has been inspired by the artist’s childhood memories and his life in Latgale, and perhaps this also explains the coloristic qualities and sincerity of Zvejsalnieks’ paintings. RODRIGO HERNANDEZ’ EXHIBITION IT IS PERHAPS MY IMMATURITY 24.03.-07.05., 12:00-20:00 (II), 12:00-18:00 (III-VII) The exhibition by Mexican artists Rodrigo Hernandez called It is Perhaps my Immaturity will be made up of papier-mache installations, which will fuse together with the architecture of the exhibition space. The name of the exhibition comes from the work of Swiss novelist Robert Walser’s manuscript The Microscripts, which has been written in a very enigmatic and shrunken down form. kim? MAIJA LUUTONEN’S "EXHIBITION EASY PEASY, PLAN, DIVE" 24.03.-07.05., 12:00-20:00 (II), 12:00-18:00 (III-VII) As part of the kim? Contemporary Art Center’s program Institutional Residence, which was launched in 2016, the solo exhibition of Finnish artist Maija Luutonen, from the Helsinki Sic space of contemporary art, will be held in Riga. BACH AND VASKS IN GOOD FRIDAY 14.04., 19:00 A few years ago the Latvian Radio Choir welcomed Easter with the performance of all German grand master Johann Sebastian Bach’s passions, delivering three different renditions of the New Testament’s narrative of the Passion of Jesus. The concert series "Bach. Passion. Riga" received the Grand Music Award of Latvia. This year, the artistic director of the of the choir Sigvards Kļava has interspersed the choruses and corals from Bach’s passions with Pēteris Vasks’ music, ranging from a quiet contemplation in the stanzas by Mother Teresa to calm prayer and jubilations in praise of the Resurrection in his newest works Gloria and Mein Herr und mein Gott, performed by the Latvian Radio Choir together with the chamber orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga and organist Ilze Reine. She performs with the Young Eurasian Soloists, chamber orchestra formed by her. JŪRMALA JAZZ. CYRILLE AIMEE 29.04., 19:00 Cyrille Aimée was primarily raised in France by a French-Dominican parentage. As a curious child in Samois-sur-Seine, she would sneak out of her bedroom window to wander into the nearby gypsy encampments filled with those attend- ing the annual Django Reinhardt Festival. Opening of new summer season and 80th anniversary of Zemgale farmstead at Ethnographic Open-Air Museum

THE DOM MUSEUM ― TEMPLE FOR SCIENCE AND ART 01.01.-30.12., 11:00-17:00 (III-VII), from 01.05. 10:00-17:00 (I-VII) The exhibition is dedicated to the history of the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation. The origins of the museum go back to 1773; however, the exhibition focuses on the period of the Dom Museum (1890―1936), with a particular emphasis on the Baltic German contribution to the preservation of Latvia’s cultural values and the fortunes of cultural treasures during the Second World War. OPENING OF NEW SUMMER SEASON AND 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF ZEMGALE FARMSTEAD AT ETHNOGRAPHIC OPEN-AIR MUSEUM 01.05., 10:00-14:00 When the trees are all green and flowers are in full bloom in the fields, it is time for the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum to open the new summer season. The sounds of chirping birds and singing voices can be heard throughout the park. The museum’s historical buildings and farmsteads open their doors once again after the long winter season, and guests are greeted by local craftsmen, who demonstrate their skills to visitors. The museum’s Zemgale farmstead was origi- nally erected in 1937. The museum’s theme this year will be associated with this building, including tales about the history and people of Zemgale. Traditional songs of Zemgale will be sung, and visitors will be able to enjoy traditional treats at the museum’s "bread barn". Latvian Ethnographic Open-air Museum

MAY’S OPEN-AIR RELIGIOUS RITUAL 14.05., 12:00-14:00 In the month of May, the ritual of singing at the cross is a new tradition at the Eth- nographic Open-Air Museum but an age-old tradition in Latgale and Augšzeme. According to Catholic traditions of Latgale, a cross is the place of reflection where one looks up, removing any hat in reverence to God. People called divine service in May as "dzīduošana pi krusta" (singing at the cross) and held it at their own in- itiative. Exhibition "Version - Latvians: Latvian Ethnographic Exhibition of 1896"

EXHIBITION: SILVER CUP "21ST CENTURY RENAISSANCE" 01.01.-30.12., 11:00-17:00 (III-VII), from 01.05. 10:00-17:00 (I-VII) This filigree masterpiece fascinates with its grace, beauty, and magnitude. 35.37 kg of silver was used in the cup’s creation; its height – 1.20 m. Silver cup "21st Century Renaissance" symbolizes welfare, fortune, and the force of life. The cup incorporates gilded engravings, which represents the flow of money from ancient times up to this day. 47TH ANNUAL LATVIAN ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR 04.06., 09:00-18:00, 04.06., 09:00-17:00 Since 1972, the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum has been organizing its annual Latvian Arts and Crafts Fairs, which traditionally is held during the first weekend of June. Over the past 46 years, the Fair has become an event of national importance - it is not only a fair, but a national exhibition and one of the largest annual gatherings of residents and guests. Along with the arts and craftsmen participating in the Fair, various traditional folklore and dance groups, as well as musical ensembles and others perform at the Fair. National cuisine is also available to hungry visitors. These are the people who cultivate the Fair each year, and acquaint modern-day society with the traditional culture of the Latvian people. Līgo! festivities on November 11 embankment and Dzegužkalns

LĪGO! MARKET 22.06., 09:00-19:00 To properly prepare for the annual Midsummer of Līgo! festival, a traditional market will once again be organized on Riga’s Dome Square, where farmers and craftsmen from all over Latvia will offer flower bunches and garlands, oak leaf crowns, traditional teas and honey from Latvia’s aromatic summer fields, country bread, cheeses, warm pastries, smoked meat and other goodies necessary to properly celebrate the merry festival. Furthermore, Latvia’s best craftsmen will also be on hand, offering a wide range of items - wickerwork, clay dishes, linen tablecloths and bed covers, knitted items, wooden spoons, as well as traditional jewelry made of amber and silver. LĪGO! FESTIVITIES ON NOVEMBER 11 EMBANKMENT AND DZEGUŽKALNS 23.06.
