OPERA FAUST 17.01., 21.02., 08.03., 19:00 Dr. Faust is sinking into depression despite his many years, and the promise made to mysterious Mephistopheles - all his wishes granted in exchange for his soul. Charles Gounod’s marvelous opera, based on the Goethe tragedy, had its world premiere back in Paris in 1859. Here and now, director Aik Karapetyan offers late-Gothic milieu, with touches of German Expressionism, including si- lent movies. “However, this does not mean a production that will be ‘hopelessly serious,” the director is quick to explain. In part two, the Dream Team will move on to jazz and perform the Swedish composer Sun- din’s dedication to the LNSO cellists. Following the tradition of the contemporary ballet story-telling, a new ballet creation by an interna- tionally acclaimed Slovenian choreographer Edward Clug will take us to realms of intoxicating self-irony, absurd and surrealism, which are reflected also in enchanting melodies and poetic dreams of Grieg’s incidental and concert music. Andrey Nadezhdinsky solo exhibition - Golden Spider Web

OPERA “TANNHÄUSER” 01.02., 31.03., 18:00 In Richard Wagner’s masterpiece, Tannhäuser draws his artistic inspiration from experiencing polar opposites: the pleasure he experiences in an underground grotto, and the asceticism he experiences on his pilgrimage to Rome. He also loves women who are polar opposites to one another, and searches for a way to combine these two opposites to form a unified whole: Tannhäuser wants the sensual Venus to have Elisabeth’s chastity, whereas he wants the chaste Elis- abeth to have Venus’s sensuousness. Stage Director Vilppu Kiljunen tells about his production: My approach to the staging was built around a central question: the conditions that make love and loving possible in a cultural context, where the idea and role of a woman is violently divided into that of a saint or a whore. As usual in the works of Artūrs Bērziņš, the obviously clear mes- sage in his images are most likely deceptive and hold a double bottom with an opposite meaning, as is everything we face in this period of information war.
