Finally, lately in the 8th century, Amir Timur thrived from Transoxiana in northeastern Iran, and gradually made obedient Iran and surrounding countries. However, in the Northwest of Iran, Turkmen tribes reigned but during the Timurid raids they had returned to obedience, and just as withdrawal of the Timurid troops, they were quickly back their former power. These clans and tribes sometimes were troublesome to the Ottoman Empires and Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt. Due to the remoteness of these regions of Timurid Capital and, more importantly, lack of permanent government administrations and organizations of the Timurid capital, following Amir Timur’s death, because of dynastic struggles among his Sons and Grandsons, the Turkmens under these conditions were increasing their power and then they had challenged the Timurid princes. The most important goals of this study has focused on investigation of their relationships and struggles. How and why Timurid Empire has begun to combat against Qara Qoyunlu and Aq Qoyunlu Turkmens; what were the reasons for the failure of the Timurid deal with them, these are the questions that we try to find the answers in our study. -
The Mongol City of Ghazaniyya: Destruction, Spatial Reconstruction, and Preservation of the Urban Heritage1
Atri Hatef Naiemi The Mongol City of Ghazaniyya: Destruction, Spatial Reconstruction, and Preservation of the Urban Heritage1 Hülegü Khan (r. 1256-1265), a grandson of Chinggis Khan, founded the Ilkhanate in Iran in 1256 as the southwestern sector of the Mongol Empire. Mongol campaigns in Iran in the thirteenth century caused extensive destruction in different aspects of the Iranians’ social life and built environment. However, the political stability after the arrival of Hülegü intensified the process of urban development. Along with the reconstruction of the cities that had been extensively destroyed during the Mongol attack, the Ilkhans founded a number of new settlements. Their architectural and urban projects were mostly conducted in the northwest of present-day Iran, with some exceptions, for instance the city of Khabushan in Khurasan which was largely rebuilt by Hülegü and the notables of his court.2 In western Iran, Hülegü firstly focused his attention on the reconstruction of Baghdad, but following the designation of Azerbaijan as the headquarters of the Mongols, his urban development activities extended to this region. Sa’di’s Rose Garden: a Paean to Reconciliation ‘An Exploration of Socio-Political Relations, Human Interactions, Integration, Peace and Harmony’ Mohamad Ahmadian Cherkawani (Iman) Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations Department of Politics School of Geography, Politics, Sociology 01/2018 i ii Abstract The core purpose of this PhD has been to investigate the reconciliatory thought of a 13th century Persian poet named Sa’di Shirazi. Although Sa’di’s prose poetry is not set out in the systematic form of a comprehensive political theory, profound insights were extracted from it that convey a powerful message regarding the necessities of harmonious behaviour as a precondition for a healthy society, and the dangers of not adhering to it. The Rose Garden of Sa’di, his most prized work and a pillar of Persian literature which is one of the oldest in the world, was the focus of this thesis. I revealed that deep within the Rose Garden, there exists a concept of human integration or reconciliation leading towards an ideal state that Sa’di envisions and the name of the book denotes. This concept lies at the heart of his concern for human well-being and prosperity. The thesis is developed in five stages: first, I describe Sa’di’s personality and life experiences; second, I show how recently there has been an aesthetic turn and a local turn in our understanding of present-day politics and peace, demonstrating how poetry, especially indigenous poetry, can have a significant impact on political behaviour and understanding; third, I deal with -

This opposition, obviously, had certain theoretical bases. Though the power and authority of 'ulama' vis-a-vis the existing government began to increase right from the Safavi period, an attempt to make a direct bid for power is certainly a recent phenomenon. Although there are quite a few general works available on the changing roles of the Iranian 'ulama', there is no serious study of the theoretical changes that took place in the thoughts of Shi'i 'ulama' during the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah. This dissertation tries to fulfil this gap. The dissertation is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter deals with the origins of Shi'i theory of imamate. Most of the basic concepts of Ithna 'Ashari Shi'ism (the Twelvers) such as imaroat ghayabat, intezar and taqiyya were crystallised during the Buyid and Mongol periods. According to Ithna 'Ashari Shi'i belief only the Prophet and imams possess legitimate authority -2- to rule over the people. They enjoyed spiritual as well as temporal velayat' over the people. -

XXVIII NO.1, 2013 NEW DISCOVERED ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN NUSHKI DISTRICT OF BALOCHISTAN (A FIELD REPORT) History Farooq Baloch*& Waheed Razzaq† Abstract: Balochistan is known as a mother land of ancient cultures because, of its countless Archaeological sites. Balochistan is divided among three countries, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan, and the part Pakistan consists approximately 3, 47,190, square kilometer, and it is 44% out of the total area of Pakistan. It is further divided into 6 Divisions and 30 Districts. Every district has a huge importance by its Archaeological sites which consist on Mounds, Graveyards, Tombs, Inscriptions, Karezes and Ancient Dames etc. Some very important sites are excavated by the Archaeologists, like Mehrgarh in Bolan District, Peerak in Sibi District, Mound of Killi Gul Mohammad in Quetta District, Pariano Ghundai in Zhob District, Anjeera in Kalat District, Bala Kot in Bela District and Meeri Kalat in Kech District, etc., large number of archaeological sites have been discovered but still they are not excavated. On the other side different archaeolocial sites of Balochistan are still unexplored. Many sites are still hidden and not discovered by any Archaeologist, the sites of Nushki District have always been ignored by local peopal and Archaeologists. In the espect of Archaeology Nushki has also many attractive and important archaeological sites. The following research article is about the new discovered Archaeological sites in the Nushki District by a team of Balochistan study centre. The objectives behind this study are to overview the new Archaeological sites in the Nushki District and explain their historical, cultural, anthropological and social importance. -

While Timurid fine art such as miniature painting has been extensively studied, the literary production of the era has not been fully explored. Abd al-Rahman Jami (817/1414- 898/1492), the most renowned poet of the Timurids, is among those Timurid poets who have not been methodically studied in Iran and the West. Although, Jami was recognized by his contemporaries as a major authority in several disciplines, such as science, philosophy, astronomy, music, art, and most important of all poetry, he has yet not been entirely acknowledged in the post Timurid era. This dissertation highlights the significant contribution of Jami, the great poet and Sufi thinker of the fifteenth century, who is regarded as the last great classical poet of Persian literature. It discusses his influence on Persian literature, his central role in the Naqshbandi Order, and his input in clarifying Ibn Arabi's thought. Jami spent most of his life in Herat, the main center for artistic ability and aptitude in the fifteenth century; the city where Jami grew up, studied, flourished and produced a variety of prose and poetry. -

Isfahan and its Palaces Statecraft, Shi ’ ism and the Architecture of Conviviality in Early Modern Iran Sussan Babaie This beautifully illustrated history of Safavid Isfahan (1501–1722) explores the architectural and urban forms and networks of socio-cultural action that reflected a distinctly early modern and Perso-Shi ’ i practice of kingship. An immense building campaign, initiated in 1590/1, transformed Isfahan from a provincial, medieval and largely Sunni city into an urban-centered representation of the first Imami Shi ’ i empire in the history of Islam. The historical process of Shi ’ ification of Safavid Iran, and the deployment of the arts in situating the shifts in the politico-religious agenda of the imperial household, informs Sussan Babaie’s study of palatial architecture and urban environments of Isfahan and the earlier capitals of Tabriz and Qazvin. Babaie argues that, since the Safavid claim presumed the inheritance both of the charisma of the Shi ’ i Imams and of the aura of royal splendor integral to ancient Persian notions of kingship, a ceremonial regime was gradually devised in which access and proximity to the shah assumed the contours of an institutionalized form of feasting. -

Chapter 1 From Temür to Selim: Trajectories of Turko-Mongol State Formation in Islamic West-Asia’s Long Fifteenth Century Jo Van Steenbergen This chapter presents both a general overview and trans-dynastic interpreta- tion of the power elites of fifteenth century Islamic West-Asia, their institutions and practices, and the many transformations that marked their trajectories across the rough political landscape of the time.1 As far as that overview is con- cerned, the chapter retraces the general contours of these many crisscrossing trajectories of trans-regional, regional and local empowerment that distin- guished the landscape from Nile to Oxus and from Bosporus to Indus between the end of the fourteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth centuries ce (or the end of the eighth and the beginning of the tenth centuries ah). In a rather traditional fashion, the chapter focuses in particular on describing spe- cific trajectories of trans-regional empowerment. These appeared in the for- mat of dynastic and non-dynastic hegemonic constellations of power elites that engaged in competing politics of conquest, integration, reproduction and exploitation, or of war-making and state-making, on a trans-regional or even West-Asian scale. The chapter will of course also have to consider other trajec- tories of empowerment as equally meaningful components of fifteenth- century Islamic West-Asia’s political history, even when they did not necessarily involve or relate to any identifiable processes of state-making. CHAPTER SEVEN Zoroastrianism in India JESSE S . P ALSETI A Introduction HE PARSIS ARE A community in India that trace their ancestry T and religious identity to pre-Islamic, Zoroastrian Iran (pre-651 CE). Te Parsis presently number approximately 110,000 individuals worldwide, and 57,245 individu als in India according to the Census of India 2011. Tis chapter examines the history of the Parsis and the emergence of a unique religious community in India. Te Parsis are the descendants of the Zoroastrians of Iran who migrated to and settled in India in order to preserve their religion. Zoroastrianism is the religion associated with the teachings and revelation of the Iranian prophet and priest Zarathustra (or Zoroaster, as he was referred to by the ancient Greeks). Zarathustra and his religious message date from the second millennium BCE (c. 1200-1000 BCE). Zoroastrianism was the first major religion of Iran and a living faith in the an cient world. Zoroastrianism shares with Hindu (Vedic) religion ancient roots in the common history of the Indo-Iranian peoples. Te oldest Zoroastrian religious works are the Gāthās: a collection of esoteric songs, poems, and thoughts composed in Old Iranian, later referred to as Gāthic Avestan or Old Avestan, and ascribed to Zarathustra and his culture. Te Gāthās intimate a world of good and evil attributed to antagonistic good and evil spirits. Zoro- astrianism represents an original attempt to unify the existing ancient Iranian dualistic tradition within an ethical framework. Early Zoro- astrianism held human nature to be essentially good, and modern Zoroastrianism continues to summarize the duty of humans as 226 JESSE S .
