This Annual Report is presented, as per our annual practice, in six parts comprising (I) University Authorities and Boards, (II) University Departments, Centres and Programmes, (III) Achievements of the University Faculty, (IV) General Administration, (V) Affiliated Colleges, and (VI) Recognized Institutions. The Report largely covers the profiles and activities of the post graduate departments at the University and the significant achievements of both the members of the faculty and the students. The section on affiliated colleges mirrors the activities that are undertaken by the professional and non-professional colleges affiliated to this University. Goa University is ranked among the top 25 universities in India. Credit for the stature of the university goes largely to its well-established academic and research programs and the ability of our faculty to garner substantial extra-mural funding from renowned national agencies and institutions for research in niche areas. For a small state university, this is a creditable achievement. This Annual Report reflects the involvement of the faculty in research publications in reputed national/international journals as well as their initiative in organizing national and international conferences. The Report also reflects the myriad academic and co-curricular activities organized by the colleges affiliated to Goa University, and their significant contribution to the spread of higher education to every nook and corner of this State. I would like to record my appreciation and acknowledgment towards the cooperation of all the teaching and non-teaching staff members involved in the compilation of this Annual Report. Prof. Dileep N. Deobagkar Vice Chancellor 4 INTRODUCTION Goa University has treaded a path of sustained growth since its inception in 1985 around the nucleus of Centre for Post Graduate Instruction and Research of the University of Bombay in Goa. As is expected of an academic institution, Goa University has grown steadily in terms of its infrastructure, addition of contemporary courses with a dynamic curriculum, and increase in the number of affiliated colleges and recognized institutes. The Annual Report of the University attempts to reflect the various facets of academic and co- curricular activities at the University and at its affiliated colleges. The information contained in the pages that follow truly reflect the vibrant academic ethos of the University, its focus on research, and notably the rich contribution of the faculty in terms of research projects, national and international seminars and workshops as well as publications. We are thankful to all heads of University departments and Principals of affiliated colleges who have painstakingly compiled information that is contained in this Report. The University has secured fruitful and mutually beneficial engagements with the Goa Chamber of Quarterly News Bulletin Commerce and Industry, Goa Science Centre, Institute Menezes Braganza and also of a number of NGOs, along with the captains of Goan industry and has established Goa University a Nehru Study Centre, where academicians, philosophers and technocrats from around the country and outside will deliberate, interact and exchange ideas, con- v cepts and visions with the students, as well as the general public, he said.

    Jnanpith Award JNANPITH AWARD The Jnanpith Award is an Indian literary award presented annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their "outstanding contribution towards literature". Instituted in 1961, the award is bestowed only on Indian writers writing in Indian languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India and English, with no posthumous conferral. The Bharatiya Jnanpith, a research and cultural institute founded in 1944 by industrialist Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain, conceived an idea in May 1961 to start a scheme "commanding national prestige and of international standard" to "select the best book out of the publications in Indian languages". The first recipient of the award was the Malayalam writer G. Sankara Kurup who received the award in 1965 for his collection of poems, Odakkuzhal (The Bamboo Flute), published in 1950. In 1976, Bengali novelist Ashapoorna Devi became the first woman to win the award and was honoured for the 1965 novel Pratham Pratisruti (The First Promise), the first in a trilogy. This argument commences from the postulate that the recognition of Konkani in the Devanagari script as the official language of Goa, determined the boundaries of the state’s civil society.Through an ethnographic study of the contestations around the demand that the Roman script also be officially recognised, the thesis demonstrates how by deliberately excluding the Roman script for the language, the largely lower-caste and lower-class Catholic users of the script were denoted as less than authentic members of the legitimate civil society of the state.
