Vena, B.A., M.A. Marquette University, 2009 One of the unfortunate implications of industrialization and the rapid expansion of global commerce is the magnification of the impact that humans have on their environment. Exponential population growth, along with growing technological capabilities, has allowed human societies to alter their terrain in unprecedented and destructive ways. The cumulative effect has been significant to the point that the blame for widespread environmental degradation must be pinned squarely on human shoulders. Because of our dependence on these systems for survival, the threat to the environment is a threat to human life. The root of the ecological crisis is found in human attitudes and behaviors. In the late 1960’s it was suggested that Christianity was a key source of the problem because it promoted the idea of human “dominion” over creation. -

Oral Presentation Abstracts OP001 Rights, Interests and Moral Standing: a critical examination of dialogue between Regan and Frey. Rebekah Humphreys Cardiff University, Cardiff, United Kingdom This paper aims to assess R. G. Frey’s analysis of Leonard Nelson’s argument (that links interests to rights). Frey argues that claims that animals have rights or interests have not been established. Frey’s contentions that animals have not been shown to have rights nor interests will be discussed in turn, but the main focus will be on Frey’s claim that animals have not been shown to have interests. One way Frey analyses this latter claim is by considering H. J. McCloskey’s denial of the claim and Tom Regan’s criticism of this denial. While Frey’s position on animal interests does not depend on McCloskey’s views, he believes that a consideration of McCloskey’s views will reveal that Nelson’s argument (linking interests to rights) has not been established as sound. My discussion (of Frey’s scrutiny of Nelson’s argument) will centre only on the dialogue between Regan and Frey in respect of McCloskey’s argument. The Context of Eco-Theology
CHAPTER 29 The Context of Eco-theology Laurel Icearns The phrase "I'm a tree-hugging Jesus freak," a self-description uttered recently by a Pentecostal environmentalist, demonstrates the complexity of contemporary eco- theology and religious ecological activism. For the past two decades or more, the com- bination of these two identities seemed unthinkable, for Christians were still struggling to articulate a response, much less a response that would appeal to Pentecostals, usually viewed as un-ecological. This chapter examines many of the historical and more contemporary contexts that shape what is now a rich eco-theological conversation. Although the chapter tries to give a broad international sense of the movement, it draws heavily upon the US context where a diverse and multi-faceted conversation about eco-theology has been going on for over three decades. Furthermore, while there are now ecological voices within all the major religious traditions, this chapter will primarily focus on Christianity as the context of eco-theology. While there are many historical precedents that one could acknowledge leading into the contemporary environmental movement, such as Aldo Leopold's Sand Country Almanac (1949),most scholars agree it began in the 1960s, marked by a variety of pub- lications that brought attention to the issues at hand. In fact, many historians of the movement date the birth of the modern environmental movement to Rachel Carson's 1962 paradigm-changing book Silent Spring, which detailed the damage wrought by pesticides throughout the ecological web. Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons" (1968),a doomsday scenario about population growth, was published toward the end of the decade. -

MILNER‐GULLAND , AND KATIE SLOCOMBE 1Division of Ecology and Evolution, Imperial College, Ascot, United Kingdom 2Centre for Environmental Policy, Imperial College, London, United Kingdom 3Department of Psychology, University of York, York, United Kingdom Ethnoprimatology is an important and growing discipline, studying the diverse relationships between humans and primates. However there is a danger that too great a focus on primates as important to humans may obscure the importance of other animal groups to local people. The Waorani of Amazonian Ecuador were described by Sponsel [Sponsel (1997) New World Primates: Ecology, evolution and behavior. New York: Aldine de Gruyter. p 143–165] as the “natural place” for ethnoprimatology, because of their close relationship to primates, including primates forming a substantial part of their diet. Therefore they are an ideal group in which to examine contemporary perceptions of primates in comparison to other types of animal. We examine how Waorani living in Yasuní National Park name and categorize primates and other common mammals. Although there is some evidence that the Waorani consider primates a unique group, the non‐primate kinkajou and olingo are also included as part of the group “monkeys,” and no evidence was found that primates were more important than other mammals to Waorani culture. Instead, a small number of key species, in particular the woolly monkey (Lagothrix poeppigii) and white‐lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari), were found to be both important in the diet and highly culturally salient. -

Author: Gaard, Greta Title: Strategies for a Cross-Cultural Ecofeminist Literary Criticism Strategies for a Cross-Cultural Ecofeminist Literary Criticism Greta Gaard University of Wisconsin-River Falls Interdisciplinarity, multiculturalism, internationalism—according to Cheryll Glotfelty, these are crucial areas for ecocriticism’s continued development. Drawing on fifty years of interdisciplinary work in Women’s Studies, ecofeminist literary critics with a history of work in multiculturalism would seem well poised to offer bridging strategies toward an international ecocriticism. Are there insights we can draw from the analyses of multicultural feminisms within the United States to guide the development of ecofeminist literary criticisms cross-culturally? What features of this ecocriticism will need to change? For if both feminism and ecocriticism are grounded in specific material, cultural, and economic relations to place and history, then ecofeminist literary criticism cannot be expected to remain the same from one set of eco-social relations to the next. Like much of ecocriticism, ecofeminist literary criticism is grounded in activism, and committed to using literary criticism as a strategy for ecodefense. In the west, ecofeminism is an environmental theory and practice that developed in the 1980s through antinuclear peace protests at Greenham Common in England, as well as at Seneca Falls and at the Vol. 1 Vol. Women’s Pentagon Actions; it has roots in feminist vegetarianism through Feminists for Animal Rights, antiracist feminism through the Woman Earth Feminist Peace Institute, No. 1 feminist earth-based spiritualities and feminist political engagements as well as through the international Green movement. After nearly two decades of activist and theorized engagements, ecofeminist literary criticism took root in U.S., Australian, and European ecocriticism, reaching ecocritics in Japan, China, and Taiwan in the past decade. -

This research was therefore required to examine the theological implications of climate change with the aim of bridging the gaps between theological and scientific interpretation of the events. Comparative phenomenological methodology was adopted in view of the fact that theological interpreta- tions of events needed to be compared with scientific ideas so as to ascertain the meeting point. The re- search noted that the areas of variance between theological beliefs and climate change are as a result of wrong interpretation of theological events.
