Cover Page The handle http://hdl.handle.net/1887/58771 holds various files of this Leiden University dissertation Author: Kok, D.P. Title: Visualizing the classics : reading surimono and ky ka books as social and cultural history Issue Date: 2017-10-10 ō Chapter 5: Visualizing the classics: Intellectual networks and cultural nostalgia 5.1 Introduction This chapter investigates how kyōka poets acquired their knowledge of classical literature, discusses the way in which poets and illustrators visualized literature in their projects, and reflects on what their motivations were for referring to specific elements in cultural history. Shunman’s kokugaku connections have been elucidated by Tanaka, and kokugaku influences in two surimono series that Shunman designed in the first half of the 1810s have been researched by Carpenter.302 My investigation continues on their approach by tracing how other major kyōka poets and surimono designers were connected to intellectual networks of their time; in particular to scholars of the classical texts that inspired literary surimono series. Moreover, textual information in the surimono is matched to contemporaneous scholarship. Did knowledge of classical literature enter kyōka society via printed exegetical texts in commercial editions, or are ties to scholars generally so close that surimono creators had access to such knowledge already before the general public did? How did kyōka poets relate to the ideological underpinnings of the kokugaku movement? And is there any relation between birth class and the influx of cultural knowledge detectable in kyōka society? Answering these questions will clarify where surimono creators gained their understanding of the classical texts they visualized, and what role each of these creators played.

Ohide of the Tamamura-ya, seated, is receiving shamisen instruc- tion from Toyoshina of the Tomimoto school, ca. 1789. Courtesy of n 1751, Tanuma Okitsugu, a politician who left a significant mark on Christie’s New York. the second half of the eighteenth century, was one of many osobashti I serving the ninth shogun Ieshige. Osobashti were secretaries who con- veyed messages between the shogun and counselors, a position of a modest income, which in Tanuma’s case carried an annual salary of 150 koku. By 1767, Tanuma was receiving approximately 20,000 koku as the personal secretary to the tenth shogun, Ieharu. Two years later, with a salary of 57,000 koku, Tanuma was a member of the powerful shogunate council. Although examples of favoritism and extravagant promotion had occurred under the previous shoguns Tsunayoshi and Ienobu, there was no precedent for the degree of actual power Tanuma Okitsugu had assumed. He won his position through a combination of superior intelligence, political skill, and personal charm. In addition, he made unscrupulous use of bribery to coun- selors in key positions and ladies of the shogun’s harem.1 In 1783, after his son Okitomo’s name was added to the shogun’s select list of counselors, father and son virtually ruled Japan. Kitagawa Utamaro. Komurasaki of To strengthen the nation’s economy, Tanuma Okitsugu allied himself the Great Miura and her lover Shirai with the commercial powers of Edo and Osaka and promoted industry and Gonpachi (discussed in Chapter 3).

ART RESEARCH vol.18 Yosan-e and The Aesthetics of Post-Tenpo Reforms Era Sericulture Prints Vanessa Tothill (立命館大学 日本デジタル・ヒューマニティーズ拠点 博士課程後期課程D5) E-mail [email protected] abstract Sericulture prints (yōsan-e), showing women industriously cultivating silkworms, were a publishing trend that emerged in the late-eighteenth century, possibly in response to the growth of Japanese silk production and the spread of commercial agricultural practices. yōsan-e combined the content of informative agricultural texts (nōsho) with the aesthetic conventions of 'pictures of beauties' (bijinga) - an ukiyo-e genre commonly associated with the depiction of urban prostitutes and teahouse waitresses. An analysis of the text- image compositions published before and after the Tenpō Reforms (1841-1843) reveals how, in a small number of cases, nishiki-e publishers and kyōka poets exploited the official narratives of filial piety (kō) and diligence (kinben) as part of a larger strategy to allow for the continued production of prints of beauties during periods of heightened censorship. Introduction When looking at Edo-period yōsan-e, one should bear in mind that a large portion of the population was forbidden to wear silk by official This article will focus on three mid-nineteenth sumptuary laws that restricted the consumption century yōsan-e series, which depict silk cultivation: of luxury products. Excessive expenditure was from the careful handling of the egg papers, to linked to immorality, mainly because it could the reeling of raw silk from boiled cocoons by lead to insolvency, but also because it blurred the Yosan-e young female sericulturists. The kyōka poems that distinction between those of high and low status.

  • Japanese Prints Illustrated Survey
Japanese Prints A Brief Illustrated Survey (Note: The question of where to set the dividing line between eras is subject to a broad range of interpretation. Choice of date subdivisions here is strictly my own. - Tom Silver) Early Edo Period (1670-1765) The first prints were monochrome, using black ink which typically derived from pine charcoal and then was applied to a single wood block. These prints are known as sumi-e. By the early 1700s color was added - but by hand, since the problem of carving a design in perfect registration across multiple color blocks had not yet been solved. By the 1740s a method of alignment was devised which cut shallow registration slots known as kento into each color block. Print paper could then be transferred from one block to another to take on multiple colors accurately. The paper was dropped into slots which were identically located on each block, assuring uniform alignment. This system allowed multiple color inks to be applied exactly where intended on the paper. Typically only two color blocks were used at first - inked with pink and green respectively. These 1740s prints are known as benizuri-e. But in 1765 Suzuki Harunobu expanded the number of color blocks to five or more, producing the first true multi-color Japanese prints (known as nishiki-e). Edo period prints from inception in the 1670s right through the 18th century primarily featured kabuki actors and courtesans as their subject matter. The earliest figures were portrayed as androgynous, with a later shift to generic male and female figures lacking in individuality.

  • Saru Kani Kassen: Riscritture E Reinterpretazioni Di Un Mukashibanashi in Periodo Tokugawa
    Corso di Laurea magistrale (ordinamento ex D.M. 270/2004) in Lingue e culture dell'Asia Orientale Tesi di Laurea Saru kani kassen: riscritture e reinterpretazioni di un mukashibanashi in periodo Tokugawa Relatore Ch. Prof. Bonaventura Ruperti Correlatore Ch. Prof.ssa Luisa Bienati Laureando Elena Follador Matricola 815685 Anno Accademico 2012 / 2013 要旨 今日語られている『猿蟹合戦』は次のような内容で知られている。

  • Pictures of a Floating World Japanese Woodblock Printing Ukiyo-E: Pictures of the Floating World
Pictures of a Floating World Japanese Woodblock Printing Ukiyo-e: Pictures of the Floating World Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica. The term ukiyo-e translates as "picture[s] of the floating world". In 1603, the city of Edo (Tokyo) became the seat of the ruling Tokugawa shogunate. The merchant classes, positioned at the bottom of the social order, benefited the most from city's rapid economic growth, and began to indulge in and patronise the entertainment of kabuki theatre, geisha, and courtesans of the pleasure districts; the term ukiyo ("floating world") came to describe this hedonistic lifestyle. Printed or painted ukiyo-e works were popular with the merchant class, who had become wealthy enough to afford to decorate their homes with them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H4XjIgloQE&t=121s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lX6xT4efQs Hiroshige (1797-1858) Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his horizontal- format landscape series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō and for his vertical- format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld1lD m56dfY Hokusai (1760-1849) Katsushika Hokusai, known simply as Hokusai, was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period.
