Carol A. Senf points to how the 19th Century “witnessed unprecedented scientific discoveries and technological developments that have helped to determine the shape and nature of our own age” (5). These advancements had not only a profound impact on everyday life, they also fuelled the imagination of artists. Mary Shelley, Robert Louis Stevenson and Bram Stoker are all children of the 19th Century, inspired by its dynamic and thought-provoking qualities. Living and working in an era where, to Christa Knellwolf and Jane Goodall, “the magic and mystique of science was crossing paths” and where “it was impossible to determine which of a range of mind- boggling prospects might become an actuality”, it is not surprising that scientific development was to become a abundant source of inspiration (8). From this source, both hopeful and horrifying questions could be posed, questions concerning the direction of scientific progress. Was it an entirely positive force aiding people in their lives or were there darker elements and unseen dangers? These questions are at the core of three classic horror stories of the 19th Century: Shelley’s Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus (1818), Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) and Stoker’s Dracula (1897). -

Reading works belonging to this genre, this thesis sees writers treating approaches to masculinity not as something simple and monolithic, but as diverse and fraught with uncertainty of definition. This thesis demonstrates that the ways in which men in these novels deal with threats to their masculine identity, clearly show that masculinity is experienced as a concept no less complicated than femininity. The specific threats treated here are the role of women, men's sexuality, and mental illness. In the interest of equality, and in an academic setting where “gender studies” are frequently synonymous with “women's studies”, it is hoped that an academic approach to the male quest romance genre will lead to new understandings of the complexity of masculinity as a basis for identity. -

Brides: Voluptuous Devils or Fallen Angels? The Transgressive Sexuality of Female Vampires and its Subversion in Bram Stoker's Dracula Introduction From the nineteenth century on, a vampire is by definition a highly erotic creature carrying in itself a strange mixture of nourishment, disease and sexuality, making it so threatening. It feeds on living people through an act of oral sexuality while spreading its own contagious illness. Especially if it is a female, it is highly likely that she would be depicted as a lecherous beast. Throughout the text, dozens of sexualised images can be encountered of both sexes but here the focus is limited to sexuality of vampire women. In this paper, I will analyse how feminine sexuality is conceived of and I will pay special attention to the subversive aspect of female vampiric sexual power in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Vampire -woman – a Fallen Angel? To begin with, one ought to note that there are indeed vampirised women in Dracula, a fact usually forgotten by readers of the novel and often left untouched by critics in connection with this masculine late-Victorian text. However, vampirism of the “weaker sex” is worth investigating especially in this specific repressive Victorian context. Turning women into vampires is seen as an extremely erotic feature because vampire women can be considered the most dreaded kind in this era: fallen women. Fallen women are the total opposite of the spiritual ideal, the “angel in the house” who has no body at all, hence creating what is “often referred to as the virgin/whore dichotomy” (Dionisopoulos and Leah 209). -

After some discussion, it was decided to use the Dracula character, one of the most famous vampire to the general public. The Tomb of Dracula is an American horror comic book series published by Marvel Comics from April 1972 to August 1979. The 70-issue series featured a group of vampire hunters who fought Count Dracula and other supernatural menaces.
