CLERGY CORNER

As I write this, the Corona Virus continues to spread. We cannot help but be fearful. We’ve never lived through something like this before. So how can we cope with our fear of the future, both near and long-term? Well, I’d suggest that we confront our fears of the future by doubling down on our appreciation of the here and now. I find that every moment I spend worrying about the future eclipses my appreciation of all that is good in my life at the present moment. In my Pirkei Avot class on Wednesdays we have been studying the words of the sage, Ben Zoma. He teaches, “Who is rich? The person who is content and happy with what he or she has.” The meaning behind this aphorism is obvious. True wealth is measured in richness of spirit. So, while we indeed hope for the best, we must also be grateful for the here and now, for the many blessings we too often take for granted. Doing so adds spiritual stability to our lives and better equips us to face whatever challenges Rabbi Krupnick may come.

Modim Anachnu Lach. We are grateful for the many acts of loving kindness at our shul. We have so many opportunities to perform mitzvot, from our MLK Day of Service, to our newly created Social Action/Social Justice Task Force, from the tzedakah boxes that fill our classrooms and chapel, to visiting friends in need and singing at Lions Gate and Saltzman House. The list goes on and on… Our 3rd Annual Mitzvah Mall was another tremendous success. I want to express gratitude to our extraordinary chairs, Debra Kelberg and Marla Rosenthal, with incredible support from Paula Luborsky and Leora Waiche. We had nearly 50 community organizations represented and about a dozen post B’nai Mitzvah students who continue to inspire us with their incredible mitzvah work. Mark your calendars for next year’s Mitzvah Mall on Sunday, February 21st! Being a Jewish adult means being responsible for the performance of mitzvot, of Gd’s commandments. We are in partnership with Gd to make our world a better place. Hazzan Pomerantz-Boro We can make a difference by welcoming a new friend, sitting next to someone new in shul, or simply by smiling and saying “Shabbat Shalom”! As the prophet Isaiah beautifully expressed, “our house is a house of prayer for ALL people”. Let us all continue to be welcoming and accepting to all.

From March 1-3, I led more than fifty members of our Beth El family to the 2020 AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington DC. It was my 11th time attending the conference and I love the way it brings diverse people together in celebration of the Jewish State. I like to call it “the greatest Israel experience a person can have outside of Israel” and one of our teens described it as “the Jewish Super Bowl.” My favorite moment of this year’s conference began with watching a clip of 2013 conference footage showing a paraplegic marine able to ambulate upright thanks to the Israeli technology ReWalk. In the footage, the marine says he wants to thank the man who gave him legs. He then rolls out Amit Goffer, the quadriplegic inventor of ReWalk, who explains that he’s working on it, and that ‘one day,’ he will have a technology for quadriplegics to move upright. The footage ends. The lights rise, and the segment host sends chills down my spine as she says “That day is today,” and out comes Amit Goffer, with a new reWalk technology for quadriplegics walking upright. He explains Rabbi Green he finished this just in time to stand under the chuppah at his daughter’s wedding and to walk he down the aisle. I teared up and wasn’t the only one. If you’re interested in joining our Beth El delegation to next year’s conference, March 7-9, 2021, talk to me or register at policyconference.org.

In my last article, I spoke about how our Beth El ECC is like a family; the teachers, the administrators, and the students are one big family.

There is one major component of that family that I neglected to mention, and would now like the opportunity to shine a spotlight on: Our Volunteers. Our ECC laughed, danced, and sang at a special music show with Mr. Jon and Friends. Everyone had a blast! Our Parent Volunteers are a big part of the heart and soul that is Beth El's ECC. The Parent Teacher Group, Room Parents, as well as all of the other parent volunteers, work tirelessly to raise money; schedule assemblies; organize special events for students, their parents, and for the families as a whole; as well as special events for our teachers. Our volunteers are the unsung heroes of our ECC community.

We had a beautiful Tu BiShvat seder full of food, song, and a A most recent example is our spectacular Purim special performance by our teachers and clergy! Carnival! Both the Religious School and ECC PTGs sponsored the fantastic day. They coordinated sponsorships for all of the extra special activities, and spent time volunteering to set up and decorate, run booths, and helped clean up the event.

We cannot thank the volunteers enough for the time, energy, thought, and love that goes into all of these events!

We are looking forward to our spring holiday celebrations including the Passover Seder, Yom Our entire ECC, even the infants, got to enjoy a special Mad Science Show called “Wacky Science.” We learned about slime, Ha'Atzmaut Celebration, and Lag Ba'Omer Picnic. We polymers, super absorbents, static electricity, and dry ice! will also be getting ready for summer reading with our Spring Scholastic Book Fair. So many fun ways to celebrate together before the end of our school year!!

Lastly, our Kindergarten Graduation is just around the corner!! It's hard to believe that our Kindergarten class has almost completed their final year at Beth El's ECC!! Some of these children have been with us since they were toddlers!

What an exciting few months we have ahead of us!! We were treated to a very special puppet show from the OTS Amiel BaKehila program. Avishai Sheetrit, puppeteer, actor, B'Shalom! narrator and television personality in Israel, taught us about puppets and made us laugh. The kids loved it! REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN
