Elvio Ceci, PhD* The Constantinian University, New York ANALYSIS OF ORGANIZED CRIME: CAMORRA Abstract: Organized crime is a topic that deserves special attention, not just in criminal science. In this paper, the author analyzes Italian crime organizations in their origins, features and relationships between them. These organizations have similar patterns that we will show, but the main one is the division between government and governance. After the introductory part, the author gives a review of the genesis of the crime, but also of the main functions of criminal organizations: control of the territory, monopoly of violence, propensity for mediation and offensive capability. The author also described other organizations that act on the Italian soil (Cosa Nostra, ‘Ndrangheta, Napolitan Camora i Apulian Sacra Coroina Unita). The central focus of the paper is on the Napolitan mafia, Camorra, and its most famous representative – Cutolo. In this part of the paper, the author describes this organization from the following aspects: origin of Camorra, Cutulo and the New Organized Camorra, The decline of the New Organized Camorra and Cutolo: the figure of leader. Key words: mafia, governance, government, Camorra, smuggling. Patrizia is send to one orphanage and she came back to her family when she is almost 14, feeling detached and different. At this point her mother sells her to a man, and for Patrizia starts a life of violence and abuses. when she is finally free she meets Aniello Cirella, a very young boss in that area. He treat her like a human being and for the first time in her life she is happy, even if meantime she become a camorra queen. with the death of Aniello Cirella her dreams crash and she needs to rethink her entire path. EPISODE 2: Rosa Amato Synopsis: This story starts with a bloodbath: it’s 1999 and we are in a club. Carlo Amato, a 19 years old guy, the son of Salvatore, a businessman from Santa Maria Capua Vetere, is stabbed to death during a fight. Carlo joined the fight to protect a girl from the aggressive advances of the killer: the son of Sandokan, the leader of the Casalesi clan. This is how the story of the Amato clan begins. The father Salvatore tries to convince his friends and the witnesses to talk with the Carabinieri, but we are in the province of Caserta during the golden years of the Casalesi clan, in a world ruled by the code of silence and mafia. Rosa, Carlo's sister, lives with her mother because the parents have divorced.

The column, which since its inception until the end of 2016 was written by Adrian Wooldridge, ranges widely over the entire landscape of business. It takes a scalpel to business theory, separating the sense from the nonsense, the analysis from the hoopla. It provides portraits of great business leaders and business organisations. It shows how management ideas can revitalise (or retard) government. It pokes fun at fads from open plan offices to happiness consultants. The column is relentlessly global in scope, which makes it required reading across the world: columns take you from the campuses of giant Western corporations to the back streets of Calcutta to the boardrooms of Swedish public hospitals. It demonstrates the truth of Joseph Schumpeter’s great theory: that business people are heroes who can summon up vast business empires from thin air with the sheer force of ideas and will. But it also shows that some of these business heroes have feet of clay. Too much business writing is worthy and long-winded. The Schumpeter column is the opposite: week in and week out it captures the essence of a topical business problem in a mere thousand words. It wears its learning lightly yet is the product of prodigious reading and travel.

    RE YE S C O LL-TELLECHEA ~e mernbering Sepharad Accompanying Christopher Columbus on board the Sal/ta Marfa as it left the Iberia n Pe ni ns ula on August 3,1492, was Luis de Torres. De Torres, a polyglot , was the expedition's inkrpreter. Like many other Iberian JeWS , de Torres had recently converted to Christianity in an attempt to preserve his right to live in Sepharad, the land Iberian Jevvs had inhabited for twelve hundred years. The Edict of Expulsion, dated March 31, 1492, deprived Jews of all their rights and gave them three months to put their affairs in order and go in to exile. Implicit in the edict was exemption if jews con­ verted to Ch ristianity. It was only implicit, of courSe, becaLlse neither the laws of th e land nor the laws of the Catholic church provided for forced conversion. Although conversos would be granted full rights of citizen­ ship, the Inquisition, in turn, had the right to investigate and persecute the "new" Ch rist ians in order to prevent deviations from church doctrine. Those who did not accept conversion would be expelled from the land forever. The fate of Sepharad was irreversible. Now We can only remember Sepharad. Remembrance cannOt restore that which has been lost, but it is essen­ tiul to recognize the limitless power of human action to create as well as to destroy. Memory is not a maner of the past but a fundamental tool for analyzin g the prese nt and marching into the future with knowledge and conscience.

    AN/SO/PO 350 ORGANIZED CRIME IN ITALY: MAFIAS, MURDERS AND BUSINESS IES Abroad Rome Virtual World DiscoverIES Program DESCRIPTION: This course analyzes the role of organized crime in Italy through historical, structural, and cultural perspectives. After an overview of the various criminal organizations that are active both in Italy and abroad, the course will focus mainly on the Sicilian mafia, Cosa Nostra. Discussion topics will include both mafia wars, the importance of the investigators Falcone and Borsellino, the Maxi Trial, and the anti-mafia state organizations, from their origins to their role today in the struggle against organized crime. The course will highlight the creation of the International Department against Mafia and the legislation developed specifically to aid in the fight against criminal organizations. It will examine the ties between Cosa Nostra and Italian politics, the period of terrorist attacks, and response of the Italian government. Finally, the course will look at the other two most powerful criminal organizations in Italy: the Camorra, especially through the writings of Roberto Saviano, and the Ndrangheta, today’s richest and most powerful criminal organization, which has expanded throughout Europe and particularly in Germany, as evidenced by the terrorist attack in Duisburg. Like a Cautious Woman: Joyce’s “Eveline,” Immigration, and the Zwi Migdal in Argentina in the Early 1900s Laura Barberan Reinares Bronx Community College of the City University of New York n his 1972 essay “Molly’s Masterstroke,” Hugh Kenner challenges Ithe “conventional and superficial” readings of “Eveline” that suggest this (anti)heroine remains paralyzed in the end, unable to embrace a promising future with Frank in Buenos Aires.1 Katherine Mullin, for her part, presents compelling evidence on the discourses of white-slave trafficking circulating in Europe around the time Joyce was writing and revising “Eveline” for publication.2 In this note, I will provide further key facts supporting Kenner’s and Mullin’s read- ing of the story, since a historical look at the circumstances of Frank’s tales further reinforces questions about the sailor’s honesty. “Eveline” was first published in The Irish Homestead on 10 September 1904. One month later, on 8 October, Joyce moved to Pola for a brief period and later to Trieste, where he began his permanent exile.
