He enjoyed fishing from Hartland Quay and was often sat at the end of the bar, ready with local information - but wasn’t always to be trusted on whether the tide was coming in or going out! Philip was always full of good ideas and perhaps having been inspired by filming in the area, one plan he and his friends came up with was to make an action movie of a car, in flames, flying off the warren cliff. They filled an old car with mattresses with a plan to set it alight, drive towards the cliff edge and at the last minute jump out. In a moment of clarity, they decided it might be a little dangerous to jump out of a moving car near the cliff, so tied the steering wheel with a rope and wedged the throttle open with a piece of wood. As action was shouted, and the mattresses were burning well, they set the car off hurtling towards the cliff. However, the rope holding fast the steering wheel soon burnt through and the car veered out of control, missing the cliff edge and headed down to Blackpool Philip - Phil - Fly - Uncle Flip - Flip Flop Mill, setting fire to the gorse as it passed, before ending up in GDP (Grand Dad Phillip) - Uncle Phil - Fidget the river. The children were able to ask questions about where the authors got their ideas for their books.
