It’s no mean feat, handling a group of 98 members, one of the largest groups in the AWA. Luckily, in 2013, Kumiko was joined at the helm by Cynthia, an equally passionate art afficionado. Cynthia has a minor in Art History, and has worked as a docent at the Royal Academy in London, as well as a museum educator at The Frick Art and Historical Center in Pittsburgh. The Art group meets at least once a month. The outings can be from visiting an art gallery, where the coordinators have arranged beforehand for interesting talks by the gallery owners and curators, to visiting artist studios in order to have a personal interaction with the artists themselves to better understand their creative process. The Art Lovers Group also makes it a point to attend all the major art events of note in Hong Kong, which, in keeping with Hong Kong’s rising image as an Asian art hub, have been increasing through the years. “Hong Kong was earlier called a Cultural Desert”, says Kumiko. Nothing could be more different at this moment. Hong Kong is now host to an impressive array of prestigious art shows, starting off with the crown jewel that is Art Basel, followed by Art Central, the Affordable Art Fair, the Asia Contemporary Art Show, the Fotanian Open Studio and Fine Art Asia. Stay Cool This Summer – The Chinese Way By Dimple Shah

According to Chinese food therapy called “shi liao”, the energy content of food is divided into five different kinds, based on the capacity of the food item to generate sensation within the body. The five kinds of energy are hot, warm, neutral, cool and cold. This does not refer to the temperature of the food, but on the effect that it generates in the human body. In the Chinese diet, the notions of heat and coolness in the body relate to the balancing of the main Yin and Yang energy flows in the body. The Yin energy flow is associated with coolness, and the Yang energy flow is associated with heat. If one eats predominantly Yang foods, the body produces more Yang energy – faster, hotter, and more energetic. To balance this out, the body must consume Yin foods, which produces more Yin energy – cooler and slow moving. This is the principle behind consuming tea to cool off. Tea laden sport drinks. June/July/August 2015 AWARE 13 volunteering A beautiful experience By Patty Tarallo

I recently had the honor of serving on the AWA Board as Community Services Chair. And let me tell you, knowing about the work that the AWA does for the community, and actually being involved in helping accomplish this goal are two very different things. What an enriching experience this has been, and what an eye opener! I truly believe that in the process of carrying out my responsibilities, I have seen a different side to life in Hong Kong. It is so easy to get lost in our everyday lives here, surrounded with the fashion and architecture and good food we are used to. And yet, just beyond the glitter and the gold lies a darker reality, filled with the imagery of starvation, homelessness and despair. As Community Services Chair, I got the priceless opportunity to interact with this side of Hong Kong, and to be helper community here in Hong Kong. personally engaged in the effort to make things better. I One may think that interacting with the often desolate visited praiseworthy initiatives like the Soup Kitchen run by aspects of the human condition in this manner can leave one the nuns of Madre Theresa, where the lines of the hungry depressed and demoralized. I want to take this opportunity to convey my sincere gratitude both personally, as well as on behalf of the AWA, to the Coordinators of the different programs that work with us. And of course, a huge thanks to all the volunteers who take out the time and take up the challenge of making things better. You truly are an army of angels, and you all should be very proud of the difference you make to the community in Hong Kong.

AWA Buddy Program Celebrates its First Year!

By Alison May

I was in a meeting in the Spring of 2014 when someone said they remembered when the AWA had a Buddy Program and how they missed it. A light bulb went off in my head. I have run the Buddy Program at my children’s school for several years. I thought, “That’d be a simple thing to start up for the AWA.” Nicky Cooper was VP of Membership at the time. She loved the idea and asked me to run with it. So I did. The AWA Buddy Program is a program whereby existing members are paired with new members who wish to have a buddy to ease their transition to Hong Kong if they’re new to the city; and to introduce them to the many AWA offerings, if they are just new to the AWA. Buddies are first introduced by email and can take their friendship down any road they like - simply as a source of information, someone to have a coffee with, or to become a good new friend in Hong Kong. I do my best to pair buddies by district

and whether or not they have children living with P h o

them in Hong Kong. t o by

The program turned one year old in May. In that R time, 91 volunteers have been paired with 137 new ach e l members! I thought I’d use this anniversary to check S tr in with some of the program’s participants (both oze ski volunteers and new members) and see what they think of the program so far. I did hear about a few AWA Buddy Program members, (from left to right) Miriam Graff, Jill Baxter, hitches; but for the most part the response was Alison May & Sarah Baur overwhelmingly positive. Some of them have said: “I think the buddy program is such a 'hug' on arrival in a new and strange city.” - Sue Dean “It was great to be contacted by my Buddy...Although we are in different seasons of our life, she provided a warm welcome and I was happy to meet with her.” - Michele Goulding “We became fast friends both literally and figuratively, and did other things together as well in the time she had before she went back home. I’ve moved around quite a bit, and my AWA buddy was such a welcome source of friendship.” - Stephanie Guyett “It was nice to meet new people and hopefully I was able to provide some helpful info on Hong Kong for them.” - Jessica Cutrera “There does seem to be a real appreciation for reaching out to say ‘Hi’ and offer to answer questions and get together. She’s back! By popular demand – a magical, mystery tour of Sai Ying Pun – A Foodies’ Delight By Frances Nicholls

Originally in the 70s Sai Ying Pun was planned to be the western end of the blue MTR line however at that time it was thought there wasn’t enough foot traffic to make it financially viable. Clearly that prediction turned out incorrect and the Sai Ying Pun MTR station opened in March 2015. Sai Ying Pun translates in English to West encampment as the early British Military resided in this area which explains the naming and regimented pattern of the streets – First, Second, Third, High, Western and Eastern. Built on the steep lower slopes of Victoria Peak an escalator has been built going up Centre Street travelling between First, Second, Third and High Street. Ingredients

1 med. Green bell-pepper, minced 1 can Whole peeled tomatoes (1/2-2/3 C), chopped 1/2 Cup. Liquid from canned tomatoes or water 1/2 tsp. Salt 1 ½ tsp. Coriander powder (dhanna) 1 tsp. Garam masala 1/4 tsp. Turmeric powder (haldi or pronounced as hadda) 1/2 tsp. Red chili powder 1 T. Ketchup 1 Cup. Spiral pasta, elbow macaroni or penne pasta Some fresh minced cilantro, (opt.) for topping

Method: Cook the pasta in slighty salted water and a little oil till it is al-dente. Drain and keep aside.

Heat two tablespoon’s of oil in a saucepan and combine everything except the ketchup and the pasta. Cover and cook on medium heat for about 7-8 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and mash the contents in the pan. Do not use a blender as we need the sauce to have some texture.

Adjust the seasoning and gently fold the pasta in. Add the ketchup, mix and transfer contents to a serving plate. Sprinkle top with minced cilantro if desired.
