This volume is divided into four books. Essentially all of philosophy. The book is easy to read and assimilate compared to the works of other philosophers I have read. To be blunt: I cannot recommend this work to anyone. The Will wills, and the character and motivation of the person make it possible to learn, to gain knowledge, and this might alter the way the Will objectifies itself in us. If the whole world as representation is only the visibility of the will, then art is the elucidation of this visibility, the camera obscura which shows the objects more purely, and enables us to survey and comprehend them better. The happiness that we seek is more inclined towards self preservation and satisfaction of vanity. True, compared to Kant, Schopenhauer developed a more consistent and complete philosophy. With Schop, the Will, the thing-in-itself, is in you as much as it is in anything else. More generally, although S was an atheist, there is a lot of religion in the book, more of the order of religion as philosophy. Conceived and published before the philosopher was 30 and expanded 25 years later, it is the summation of a lifetime of thought. The only hope for the individual is to save his own soul; and even this he can do only by avoiding worldly entanglements.

Arthur bemängelte an diesem Wechsel mehrere formale Fehler, die Frommann dann be- seitigte, drang aber — von Ganslandt in Hamburg beraten — vor allem auf pünktliche Bezahlung der Wechselsumme, wodurch Frommann in größte Verlegenheit kam. Schließlich gelang es der Vermittlung Johanna Schopenhauers, eine Losung herbeizuführen, indem sie ihrem Sohne einen Wechsel über 1000 Taler auf das Danziger Bankhaus A. L. Muhl aus- stellte, Frommann ihm einen durch Nichtzahlung dés fälligen Wechsels evtl. entstehenden Spekulationsverlust bzw. entgehenden Spekulationsgewinn zu decken versprach und Arthur dafür den Frommannschen Wechsel seiner Mutter zurückgab. Johanna, die sich in der Sache nervös und aufgeregt zeigt, schließlich aber doch e.ine Lösung findet, wirft in ihren Briefen an Frommann dem Sohne vor, er sei „der mißtrauischste" und „argwöhnischste aller Menschen" und „sehr geizig", und erklärt sich sein unnachgiebiges Verhalten in der Sache daraus, daß er wisse, ex täte der Mutter einen Gefallen, wenn er sich anders benähme. Arthur nimmt seine Rechts- ansprüche und finanziellen Interessen mit kühler Festigkeit, Überlegen- heit und Genauigkeit wahr, bjttet aber, nachdem er Anfang 1816 wegen seiner Forderung in einem (nicht mehr vorhandenen) Briefe an Frommann sich heftige Ausbrüche hatte zu schulden kommen lassen, in dem abschlie- ßenden Brief „aufrichtig um Verzeihung" für sein unberechtigtes Miß- trauen und versichert den Buchhändler der vollkommenen Diskretion über die nunmehr beendete unangenehme Angelegenheit. Frommann hat 1815 und 1816 in zwei Teilbeträgen Arthur Schopenhauer den Zins- und Speku- lationsverlust mit 123 Talern 35 Groschen ersetzt und in den nächsten Jahren der Mutter den geschuldeten Betrag zurückgezahlt.

Adeles Leben mit Sibylle Mertens wurde so nicht nur von deren Ehemann und ihren sechs Kindern beein- trächtigt, die ihre Beziehung als »Unrecht, Wahnwitz, Tollheit«torpedierten.Auch Sibylles Hang zu neuen Eroberungen ebenso wie ihre enge Freundschaft zu An- nette von Droste-Hülshoff lasteten schwer auf Adele.     Seite Mein erstes Lied. An Ottilien, die mir zugeredet hatte 63 jp1, Seite 3f. Strophe 3, Vers 3, lautet In der Abschrift: »Will den Retter von so trüben Sorgen"; Adele unterstrich die Worte „von so" und schrieb darunter: „all der". Im 1. Vers der 5. Strophe hat „trauen" statt „glauben"; Sibylle bemerkt dazu: »glauben hat die Abschrift bei O.L.B. Wolfs". Der Reim gibt der letztern Version Recht. — Sibyllens Signatur: 38. Das Bild vom Abgrund und den Blüten an seinem Rande begegnet bei Adele oft; so heißt es in Ihrem Tagebuch vom Z.Juni 1819: „ . wir gewannen Mut, am Rande des Abgrunds die Blüten des Moments zu brechen". Auch Ottilie sprach gern von ihrer „einsamen Lebens- Alpe" (an Charles Des Voeux, 6. Dezember 1827, Nachlaß II 179) und schwärmte von der Hütte auf höchstem Bergesgipfel, die „über den Abhang zu schweben scheint, und man jeden Augenblick fürchten muß, daß der Blitz es zerschmettert oder ein Orkan es in die Tiefe schleudert" (an Adele, 2. Ohne dieses ausdrückliche Zeugnis Adelens selbst möchte man fast vermuten, die Verse feien von Ottilie oder doch in ihrem Namen gedichtet, denn ihre Voraus­ setzungen treffen auf Ottilie mehr zu als auf Adele.
