The political changes which occurred in the former Soviet Union in the last part of the 1980s resulted in the opening of this area to foreigners. Director Gennady Matishov of Murmansk Marine Biological Institute deserves much of the credit for this. In 1990 an international cooperation was established between the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (MMBI); the Arctic Ecology Group of the Institute of Oceanology, Gdansk; and the Norwegian Polar Research Institute, Oslo. The purpose of this cooperation is to develope scientific cooperation in the Arctic thorugh joint expeditions, the establishment of a high Arctic scientific station, and the exchange of scientific information. So far the results of this cooperation are two scientific cruises with the RV "Pomor", a vessel belonging to the MMBI. The cruises have been named Sov Nor-Poll and Sov-Nor-Po12. A third cruise is planned for August-September 1992. In addition the MMBI has undertaken to establish a scientific station at Tikhaia Bay on Hooker Island. This is the site of a former Soviet meteorological base from 1929-1958, and some of the buildings are now being restored by MMBI. -

The polar desert biome of the Canadian high Arctic Archipelago is currently experiencing some of the great- est mean annual air temperature increases on the planet, threatening the stability of ecosystems residing above temperature-sensitive permafrost. 2. Ice wedges are the most widespread form of ground ice, occurring in up to 25% of the world’s terrestrial near-surface, and their melting (thermokarst) may catalyse a suite of biotic and ecological changes, facilitating major ecosystem shifts. 3. These unknown ecosystem shifts raise serious questions as to how permafrost stability, vegetation diversity and edaphic conditions will change with a warming high Arctic. Ecosystem and thermokarst processes tend to be examined independently, limiting our understanding of a coupled system whereby the effect of climate change on one will affect the outcome of the other. 4. Using in-depth, comprehensive field observations and a space-for-time approach, we investigate the highly structured landscape that has emerged due to the thermokarst-induced partitioning of microhabitats. -

There are around 283 species of hoverfly found in the British Isles, and 176 of these have been recorded in Birmingham and the Black Country. This atlas contains tetrad maps of all of the species recorded in our area based on records held on the EcoRecord database. The records cover the period up to the end of 2019. They truly can be considered the gardener’s fiend as not only are they important pollinators but the larva of many species also help to control aphids! Great places to spot hoverflies are in flowery meadows on flowers such as knapweed, buttercup, hogweed or yarrow or in gardens on plants such as Canadian goldenrod, hebe or buddleia. Quite a few species are instantly recognisable while the appearance of some other species might make you doubt that it is even a hoverfly… Mimicry Many hoverfly species are excellent mimics of bees and wasps, imitating not only their colouring, but also often their shape and behaviour. Sometimes they do this to fool the bees and wasps so they can enter their nests to lay their eggs. Most species however are probably trying to fool potential predators into thinking that they are a hazardous species with a sting or foul taste, even though they are in fact harmless and perfectly edible. -

Hoverfly Newsletter
Dipterists Forum Hoverfly Newsletter Number 47 Autumn 2009 ISSN 1358-5029 I thank the contributors to this newsletter, particularly Roger Morris, without whom this issue would have been a rather thin one. In the first sentence of the recording scheme update he and Stuart Ball have clearly rated 2009 as so far yet another disappointing year. Yet my experience of this year has been somewhat different as, although I have not found hoverflies to be abundant, I have seen an excellent diversity of species. During 2009 to date I have seen two species I had never seen before (Dasysyrphus friuliensis and Myolepta dubia) and the hoverfly species list for my garden has increased by four. International interest in hoverflies continues to grow as witnessed by the completion of yet another successful international sympo- sium (the fifth). In Roger’s write up of this year’s event he refers to two newly-published books on hoverflies. I can recall that when I began recording the only reference work I had was a photocopy of R. L. Coe’s out-of-print key. This was supplemented in 1969 by a reprint of Verrall’s book, to be followed in 1981 by van der Goot’s Zweefvliegen.and in 1983 by the first edition of British Hoverflies. How things have changed since then! Once I have obtained copies of the two new books I shall have at least seventeen hoverfly books on my shelves. Articles and illustrations (including colour images) for the next newsletter are always welcome.
