Digital Tablets YouTube 28 April 2017 It works similarly on Android and iPad What is YouTube? • YouTube is a video hosting service that lets anyone view its content. It includes home movies, TV show clips, film trailers, video blogs, and tutorials on how to do almost anything. • The videos are streamed, so take no space on your tablet but you need an internet connection. • Unregistered users can only watch videos. Registered users can do more - e.g. upload videos (e.g. using the Share button in Photos) and comment on videos. There is quick registration via a gmail account. • YouTube earns advertising revenue. It targets adverts according to site content and audience. In Feb 2017 one billion hours of content were watched on YouTube every day. The short ads precede the video and have a Skip button if you do not want to watch them. YouTube Red is an ad free option you can buy. History February 2005 YouTube was created by former PayPal employees - , , . November 2006 bought YouTube for US$1.65 billion. How to view videos on YouTube OVERVIEW. Hold your tablet in landscape orientation and tap the YouTube icon to Open it. Tap the magnifying glass and type a topic of interest in the search slot. Select from search results noting • duration of clip • number of views (popularity) • date uploaded

EXAMPLE. Tap YouTube icon - YouTube is sometimes slow to load. 1. Type topic in search box and wait for video to load (e.g. Metamorphosis of Queen Elizabeth 2). 2. Expand the window to full screen by tapping the frame icon in lower right hand corner. 3. Tap the triangular Play icon to start the video. 4. You will briefly see video controls mid-screen and a progress bar at the foot of the screen. These will disappear but tap the screen to bring them back, e.g. if you want to pause or fast forward the video. 5. Turn off Autoplay if you do not want YouTube to load the next video of its choice. 6. When the video ends tap the lower right corner to shrink from full screen and see the controls. Tap the V in the top left to return to your search list. To remove the video thumbnail in lower right corner, flick it off screen to the right. 7. Press the tablet’s Home button to quit YouTube. Video quality depends mainly on how it was made. To adjust picture quality tap the 3 dots at top right of video, then tap Quality and select from list. 1080p is the highest video quality (HD). Tap Autoselect to ensure the video will play at the highest quality possible. Choose lower quality if you need to save on data usage. After viewing • If you tap the top right icon you can Save the video either to Watch Later or add it to a Playlist. To access these saved videos later, tap Library at the foot of the screen. • Playlists are folders for videos that you like. When you tap Add to Playlist you will be asked to Create Playlist (i.e. give it a name) or just tap to choose an existing Playlist. • You may be asked to create a Channel. This will serve as your YouTube home page from where others can access your Playlists, etc. • To Share a video after viewing, tap the arrow at top right. You can then e.g. email the link to somebody. • Tapping the back arrow at top left of screen returns you to YouTube’s opening screen. • Some videos have a Subscription button; click this if you would like to be alerted when that person / organisation uploads a new video. Subscriptions are usually free. To upload your own video: Navigate from Photos > Albums > Videos. Tap video thumbnail then tap UpArrow box (the More menu) and tap the YouTube icon. Enter info about your video (title, description, category, privacy settings) then tap Publish. You can also upload from within YouTube and this offers a few video editing options. Within YouTube navigate from My Account > tap video icon. Censorship • YouTube asks people uploading videos to adhere to a set of principles of ‘good behaviour’. • Videos deemed potentially offensive are available only to Registered Users over 18 years old. The Report button lets you tell YouTube that you find a video offensive, but people differ. YouTube (among others) is trying to use software to detect inappropriate material because the volume of uploads is too great to handle by other means. Some countries ban YouTube completely (China, Iran, Pakistan, Syria, etc). § YouTube is available in 76 languages. With localized (‘edited’) versions, its content reaches 89 countries. § More than 400 hours of content are uploaded to YouTube each minute, mostly by individuals but also by organisations (e.g. BBC, educational bodies, sport, entertainment and government organisations).
