The Gospel does not say what Mary was doing, but all Christian painters always portray her praying. And it is the most logical thing, because God speaks when one prays, when one is silent in one's soul. Certainly Mary was praying, as she will do so many times in the Gospels: We see her praying and singing gratefully when she arrives at her cousin Elizabeth's house, “my soul magnifies the Lord.” When the shepherds are going to adore the Child Jesus, the Gospel says that Mary “kept all these things and meditated on them in her heart.” (Lk 2:19) The same prayerfulness took place upon finding Jesus in the Temple. (Lk 2:51) She turned to Jesus at the Wedding of Cana asking for a miracle for the bride and groom. And, to be sure, she prayed at the foot of the Cross. What is prayer? To pray is to speak with God. As St. Thérèse of Lisieux said: “For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.” Prayer is necessary for every Christian. If we do not pray, God is a stranger to us. What friendship is preserved if we do not talk to friends? As the Catechism puts it, “a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God,” and this relationship is prayer. (CCC 2558) Today we want to take as a model the prayer of Our Mother. What was Mary's prayer like? Her prayer was at times silent; at other times it was one of joy, thanking God for His benefits; at other times it was painful, suffering at the foot of the cross, uniting her will to God's Will. But she always had the same characteristics: she was humble, persevering, praying for all men and asking only what was necessary for salvation. For whom did she pray? She prayed for all men: for the most sinful, for the most distant from God. She also prayed for the good ones, so that they might persevere in doing good. She fulfilled what the Apostles would later write: “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.” (James 5:16) And that when “we have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” (1 Jn 5:16) What did she ask for? Only those things necessary for salvation; the rest she put in God's hands. She knew that the most important thing is God's grace. As Jesus says to Saint Paul when he asked for something that God did not give to him: “Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’” (2 Cor 12,7-9) How did she ask? Above all, she asked with humility and confidence. Because God always looks at the humble, as the Virgin herself says in her Canticle: “my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness.” (Lk 1:47-48.52) Finally, She asked with perseverance. How many times do we not get what we ask for because we do not persevere in prayer! Our Lady's prayer was persevering: we see her praying in Nazareth; we find her praying at the foot of the Cross on Calvary; and we see her again praying together with the Apostles when they were waiting in Jerusalem for the Coming of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:14) Through all of this, Our Lady prayed always, perpetually and obtained everything she asked for. We too should pray in imitation of Our Lady. A life without prayer is not a Christian life. Without prayer it is difficult and nearly impossible to overcome temptations, or keep the commandments, or come out of sin, or enjoy a relationship God in Eternity, i.e., be with Him in Heaven. With prayer, however, nothing is impossible. Let us ask Our Lady, Our Lady of Peace, to give us the grace to imitate her in prayer. May she bless us and obtain this grace for us. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 W O L P! We invite you to join our parish family! Tau Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order – Herndon, Virginia St. Margaret of Cortona Region September 2019 MINISTER’S MESSAGE Peace and all good! Your new Tau Council has met, and we hope to soon share with you the vision for our servanthood. I’ll provide you with an update of our recent deliberations during the Business part of our next fraternity gathering. Remember, we are here to serve you — so you can always approach us with your thoughts, ideas, and concerns (or even praise, ‘tho it’s a bit early for that yet). Speaking of the change of Councils reminds me that the approaching fall season is typically a season of changes, too. Temperatures will (hopefully) cool, leaves will turn, children and young people will return to school and college to encounter different surroundings, subjects, and faces. I can still recall the thrill of a new school year: new clothes; new supplies; etc. With it came a mix of both excitement and trepidation — but the feeling that, this year, anything might be possible (except good grades in Algebra). But do we always have to wait for the calendar, or the seasons, or some other kind of shift, to think about or make a positive change in our lives? Sometimes, this is indeed easier, because it provides a k ind of structure we may crave. Sometimes, our own doubts, or habits, or fears — or all of these — may hold us back. But a quote frequently attributed to St. Francis gives us another perspective: “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly, you are doing the impossible.” The lesson? Change doesn’t have to happen all at once — it can be gradual.

  • The Pieta Prayer Book and the 15 St. Bridget Prayers
The Pieta Prayer Book And The 15 St. Bridget Prayers C.H.G. J.M.J To the Reader This booklet on prayer is an effort to apply the scientific method to the Truths of our Roman Catholic Faith, to obtain more grace to better serve God, drawing particularly on that gigantic source of God’s Infinite Goodness and Mercy ‐ a source virtually untapped – PROPHETIC REVELATIONS. “When it’s a question of prophetic revelations the Pope is the SOLE judge!” (Pope Leo X 5th Council of Lateran 1513) Dedication The Blessed Virgin said: “You love Me and make others love Me.” This revised edition of the Pieta Prayer Booklet is dedicated to The Dear Lady of Ephesus as an act of love to honor thine Assumption. “I am all thine my Queen and Mother and all that I have is Thine”. Purpose Scripture says: “Pray without ceasing.” St. Paul of the Cross wrote: “We enter on the broad road of perdition when we neglect prayer.” Dr. Alexis Carrel wrote: “If you make a habit of prayer, your life will be profoundly altered.” As a scientist he turned to prayer as man’s highest activity; that conversation with God to be an art of all arts. May this Pieta Prayer Booklet serve as a spiritual tool for souls who wish to increase their daily prayer life. May the Dear Angels who carried the Holy House of Loreto carry this booklet to all persons who wish to pray more after reciting the daily rosary. 3 Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Books for the Soul 2005 Catalog MÉDIASPAUL A DIVISION OF THE SOCIETY OF SAINT PAUL It all began in the heart of a young man, a youth of sixteen, James Alberione. A powerful idea came to life in him and altered the course of his whole life. At first, a simple intuition, a “tiny idea” as small as a speck of sand. The tiny idea grew into a great design. The great design, in its beauty, sparked off enthusiasm among those who adopted it, a radiant fire that has gradually spread beyond all frontiers. All this came about as the answer to a calling, the unconditional response of a child inspired by the God of the burning bush. This was the beginning of the Society of Saint Paul, an apostolic religious congregation founded by Father Alberione in 1914 and made up of priests and brothers pursuing the same vocation and mission in the Church, that of communicating the Word of God through the most rapid and efficient means of communication, such as the press, radio, television, movies, videos and records. Established in Canada since February 1947, Médiaspaul is directed by the priests and brothers of the Society of Saint Paul who are happy to present to their Customers this catalog. We hope that this selection of religious books will be a valuable spiritual nourishment. Bestseller Since 1969! #1 HE AND I Gabrielle Bossis He and I is the story of God and Gabrielle - Gabrielle Bossis - a French woman who has given us a document that is not only timely but time- less.

  • Hearing Voices, Demonic and Divine
Hearing Voices, Demonic and Divine Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of “hearing voices” than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theo- logically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God. Christopher C. H. Cook is Professor of Spirituality, Theology and Health in the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University, an Honorary Minor Canon at Durham Cathedral, and an Honorary Chaplain with Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV).
