The Gospel does not say what Mary was doing, but all Christian painters always portray her praying. And it is the most logical thing, because God speaks when one prays, when one is silent in one's soul. Certainly Mary was praying, as she will do so many times in the Gospels: We see her praying and singing gratefully when she arrives at her cousin Elizabeth's house, “my soul magnifies the Lord.” When the shepherds are going to adore the Child Jesus, the Gospel says that Mary “kept all these things and meditated on them in her heart.” (Lk 2:19) The same prayerfulness took place upon finding Jesus in the Temple. (Lk 2:51) She turned to Jesus at the Wedding of Cana asking for a miracle for the bride and groom. And, to be sure, she prayed at the foot of the Cross. What is prayer? To pray is to speak with God. As St. Thérèse of Lisieux said: “For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.” Prayer is necessary for every Christian. If we do not pray, God is a stranger to us. What friendship is preserved if we do not talk to friends? As the Catechism puts it, “a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God,” and this relationship is prayer. (CCC 2558) Today we want to take as a model the prayer of Our Mother. What was Mary's prayer like? Her prayer was at times silent; at other times it was one of joy, thanking God for His benefits; at other times it was painful, suffering at the foot of the cross, uniting her will to God's Will. But she always had the same characteristics: she was humble, persevering, praying for all men and asking only what was necessary for salvation. For whom did she pray? She prayed for all men: for the most sinful, for the most distant from God. She also prayed for the good ones, so that they might persevere in doing good. She fulfilled what the Apostles would later write: “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.” (James 5:16) And that when “we have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” (1 Jn 5:16) What did she ask for? Only those things necessary for salvation; the rest she put in God's hands. She knew that the most important thing is God's grace. As Jesus says to Saint Paul when he asked for something that God did not give to him: “Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’” (2 Cor 12,7-9) How did she ask? Above all, she asked with humility and confidence. Because God always looks at the humble, as the Virgin herself says in her Canticle: “my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness.” (Lk 1:47-48.52) Finally, She asked with perseverance. How many times do we not get what we ask for because we do not persevere in prayer! Our Lady's prayer was persevering: we see her praying in Nazareth; we find her praying at the foot of the Cross on Calvary; and we see her again praying together with the Apostles when they were waiting in Jerusalem for the Coming of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:14) Through all of this, Our Lady prayed always, perpetually and obtained everything she asked for. We too should pray in imitation of Our Lady. A life without prayer is not a Christian life. Without prayer it is difficult and nearly impossible to overcome temptations, or keep the commandments, or come out of sin, or enjoy a relationship God in Eternity, i.e., be with Him in Heaven. With prayer, however, nothing is impossible. Let us ask Our Lady, Our Lady of Peace, to give us the grace to imitate her in prayer. May she bless us and obtain this grace for us.
