Catherine was the youngest Sof twenty-fve children – a large family even by the standards of the day. However, her father was a well-to-do businessman and supported the family well. At an early age, Catherine spoke of visions; those visions sealed her vocation. Her parents coaxed her toward the usual interests of personal appearance and marriage, but she would have none of that. She cut of her golden-brown hair and dedicated her life to God. She was a fery, determined and, at times, pompous woman. She eventually joined the Dominican order – not as a vowed religious nun, but as a member of the “third order,” in which women dedicated their lives to God in the Dominican tradition but lived in their own homes and worked to support themselves. To keep the numbers of clergy at a sufcient number, little attention was paid to the quality of the candidates for C4 Meditation Nineteen priesthood.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

  • The Role of Creatures in the Spiritual Life
THE ROLE OF CREATURES IN THE SPIRITUAL LIFE To what extent should the Christian love and use the good things of this world, and to what extent should he renounce them? This is the question at issue. It is the problem of the transcendent, supernatural vocation of the Christian and his existential condition in the world on the practical level of ascetical attitudes. It is the problem of engagement and detachment. We take the term creatures in a dynamic and not a static sense, as objects of human acts rather than entities existing apart from man. Creatures embrace the whole hierarchy of humanistic values, all human goods that are legitimate objects of man's love and effort.1 We include whatever natural and supernatural goodness that is found in these human values under the one notion of their created goodness and prescind from the controverted question of the objective permanent value in terrestrial realities.2 1 Created goods are personal, e.g. health, money, love and being loved or social, e.g. culture, civilization, temporal structures; they include the goods' of nature and of art and technology, whether these directly serve the body, like the comforts of climate or furniture, or the mind, like recreation or work! or the human spirit, such as knowledge and love. The classification of these goods and their objective relation to the supernatural economy of grace is the object of the theology of terrestrial reality; our viewpoint, that of spiritual theology, is their subjective repercussions in the spiritual life and ideal attitudes to be fostered toward them.

  • Tau Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order – Herndon, Virginia St
Tau Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order – Herndon, Virginia St. Margaret of Cortona Region September 2019 MINISTER’S MESSAGE Peace and all good! Your new Tau Council has met, and we hope to soon share with you the vision for our servanthood. I’ll provide you with an update of our recent deliberations during the Business part of our next fraternity gathering. Remember, we are here to serve you — so you can always approach us with your thoughts, ideas, and concerns (or even praise, ‘tho it’s a bit early for that yet). Speaking of the change of Councils reminds me that the approaching fall season is typically a season of changes, too. Temperatures will (hopefully) cool, leaves will turn, children and young people will return to school and college to encounter different surroundings, subjects, and faces. I can still recall the thrill of a new school year: new clothes; new supplies; etc. With it came a mix of both excitement and trepidation — but the feeling that, this year, anything might be possible (except good grades in Algebra). But do we always have to wait for the calendar, or the seasons, or some other kind of shift, to think about or make a positive change in our lives? Sometimes, this is indeed easier, because it provides a k ind of structure we may crave. Sometimes, our own doubts, or habits, or fears — or all of these — may hold us back. But a quote frequently attributed to St. Francis gives us another perspective: “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly, you are doing the impossible.” The lesson? Change doesn’t have to happen all at once — it can be gradual.

  • The Pieta Prayer Book and the 15 St. Bridget Prayers
The Pieta Prayer Book And The 15 St. Bridget Prayers C.H.G. J.M.J To the Reader This booklet on prayer is an effort to apply the scientific method to the Truths of our Roman Catholic Faith, to obtain more grace to better serve God, drawing particularly on that gigantic source of God’s Infinite Goodness and Mercy ‐ a source virtually untapped – PROPHETIC REVELATIONS. “When it’s a question of prophetic revelations the Pope is the SOLE judge!” (Pope Leo X 5th Council of Lateran 1513) Dedication The Blessed Virgin said: “You love Me and make others love Me.” This revised edition of the Pieta Prayer Booklet is dedicated to The Dear Lady of Ephesus as an act of love to honor thine Assumption. “I am all thine my Queen and Mother and all that I have is Thine”. Purpose Scripture says: “Pray without ceasing.” St. Paul of the Cross wrote: “We enter on the broad road of perdition when we neglect prayer.” Dr. Alexis Carrel wrote: “If you make a habit of prayer, your life will be profoundly altered.” As a scientist he turned to prayer as man’s highest activity; that conversation with God to be an art of all arts. May this Pieta Prayer Booklet serve as a spiritual tool for souls who wish to increase their daily prayer life. May the Dear Angels who carried the Holy House of Loreto carry this booklet to all persons who wish to pray more after reciting the daily rosary. 3 Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

  • The Stages of Christian Mysticism – a Summary © Robert J
The Stages of Christian Mysticism – a Summary © Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. May 2016 The Lord calls some people to a special life of contemplation that frequently includes mystical encounters with Him. Much of the time this takes the form of a call to monastic life – though not necessarily. Such a life requires great humility, discipline, and commitment to prayer, and in many cases, such as those of St. Theresa of Avila1 and St. John of the Cross,2 it is a call to mystical surrender. The three major stages of mystical life – the purgative, illuminative, and unitive – are described in detail by these two authors as well as contemporary mystics and scholars of mystical life3. If one is called to a life of mystical union (i.e. mystical surrender to the unconditionally loving Absolute Being), it will entail dedicating several hours per day to contemplative prayer. This generally involves joining a contemplative monastery 4or living in a hermitage.5 In this 1 St. Teresa of Avila was a 16th century Carmelite mystic responsible for the reform of the Carmelite order. She was a spiritual colleague of St. John of the Cross, and wrote extensively about the spiritual and mystical life – though in simpler and more autobiographical terms than he. Her most influential book which describes the stages toward mystical surrender-perfection-union is Interior Castle. In it, she describes seven mansions, the first three of which concern the stages of preparation from prayer and meditation to humility, openness to God’s will, and the repudiation of sin in all its forms.

  • Authority and Religious Experience
9 Authority and religious experience Lawrence S. Cunningham Introduction K ILIAN MCDONNELLRECENTLY OBSERVED that the use of 'experience' has been problematic in modern Catholic theology both because it is notoriously difficult to give precision to the term and, in the wake of the modernist crisis and the reaction against modernism in Catholic circles, experience was seen as a code word for mere psychological impulses or subjective states of mind described at the expense of doctrinal clarity, j That visceral reaction against experi- ence is now very much on the wane. A contemporary Catholic theology, it is commonly argued, that does not account for the wit- ness of experience risks becoming abstract, ahistorical and bloodless. The contemporary efforts to heal the breach between theology and spirituality may be seen as a serious attempt to re-establish religious experience as a category for creating a more comprehensive, more nuanced, theology. Religious experience, however, is a complex phenomenon. One can speak of the experience of religious awe, peace, love and reli- gious desire, but one can also speak of locutions, visions, ecstasies and other such charismatic manifestations. These latter experiences may foster love of God and neighbour but they have also been the occasion for schism, bitterness and self-destruction. When we speak of religious experience in the Christian tradition we must ask, of necessity, about the relationship of such experience to the authority embedded in the believing community and its representative auth- orities. It is upon the relationship between religious experience and ecclesial authority that these reflections will focus. Religious experience as a problem Ways of authenticating religious experience are many.
