A powerful idea came to life in him and altered the course of his whole life. At first, a simple intuition, a “tiny idea” as small as a speck of sand. The tiny idea grew into a great design. The great design, in its beauty, sparked off enthusiasm among those who adopted it, a radiant fire that has gradually spread beyond all frontiers. All this came about as the answer to a calling, the unconditional response of a child inspired by the God of the burning bush. This was the beginning of the Society of Saint Paul, an apostolic religious congregation founded by Father Alberione in 1914 and made up of priests and brothers pursuing the same vocation and mission in the Church, that of communicating the Word of God through the most rapid and efficient means of communication, such as the press, radio, television, movies, videos and records. Established in Canada since February 1947, Médiaspaul is directed by the priests and brothers of the Society of Saint Paul who are happy to present to their Customers this catalog. Some base their beliefs on the teaching of Scripture, or perhaps on role models and people they admire. Some say they've been convinced by the Holy Spirit of His presence in their lives. Others had an emotional experience or even saw something amazing that led them to believe God is real. The Holy Spirit is at work in the world, but we need to ensure that the spirit we choose to listen to is in fact the Spirit of God. While supernatural signs and wonders have drawn many to God—including Saul, who became Paul, the world’s most famous missionary—we must be careful not to be guided exclusively by circumstances and emotions. In fact, Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the evidence of what we do not see. As humans, what we can see is never the whole picture. When Jesus was on Earth, He performed many supernatural miracles and signs. But even then, many people still didn’t believe He was God (John 12:37). In Matthew 12, we read of some of the Jewish religious leaders who ask Jesus for a sign from heaven. Jesus responds by telling them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign” (Matthew 12:39). Later He tells the Jews through a parable that if the ancient law and prophecies He had given them could not convince them, neither could a miraculous sign (Luke 16:19-31).

I had learnt the night prayer to Jesus, Mary and Joseph for assistance ‘in my last agony’ when at school aged eight. In later life I had developed the habit of asking St Joseph’s help with practical matters such as problems with the car or computer. It was a reference to St Joseph during an Advent retreat in December 2016 that prompted me to explore his life and mission in more detail. The retreat master mentioned two things about St Joseph which intrigued me: within the Holy Family Joseph held ‘a primacy of authority’ while Mary held ‘a primacy of love’1 and secondly that a recent mystic had experienced inner locutions from St Joseph indicating that he had been sanctified in the womb. A search of the Internet on Sister Ephrem Neuzil confirmed that St Joseph had reportedly said to her that he had been freed from original sin soon after his conception.

Your new Tau Council has met, and we hope to soon share with you the vision for our servanthood. I’ll provide you with an update of our recent deliberations during the Business part of our next fraternity gathering. Remember, we are here to serve you — so you can always approach us with your thoughts, ideas, and concerns (or even praise, ‘tho it’s a bit early for that yet). Speaking of the change of Councils reminds me that the approaching fall season is typically a season of changes, too. Temperatures will (hopefully) cool, leaves will turn, children and young people will return to school and college to encounter different surroundings, subjects, and faces. I can still recall the thrill of a new school year: new clothes; new supplies; etc. With it came a mix of both excitement and trepidation — but the feeling that, this year, anything might be possible (except good grades in Algebra). But do we always have to wait for the calendar, or the seasons, or some other kind of shift, to think about or make a positive change in our lives? Sometimes, this is indeed easier, because it provides a k ind of structure we may crave. Sometimes, our own doubts, or habits, or fears — or all of these — may hold us back. But a quote frequently attributed to St. Francis gives us another perspective: “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly, you are doing the impossible.” The lesson? Change doesn’t have to happen all at once — it can be gradual.

  • Maria Valtorta Was Born in Caserta, Italy on March 14, 1897
    In Response to Various Questions Regarding “The Poem of the Man-God" Published on April 15, 2006 by Dr. Mark Miravalle, Professor of theology and Mariology at Franciscan University of Steubenville. [Note: The Poem of the Man God has since been published under the title The Gospel as Revealed to Me, but they are the same book.] Maria Valtorta was born in Caserta, Italy on March 14, 1897. Deeply pious, Maria was strongly attracted to God from early childhood, but it was as a young woman that she started reporting mystical experiences. In 1920 she was randomly attacked by a young man who hit her in the back with an iron bar. Badly injured, she was bedridden for three months and her health began its gradual decline. In the years to follow she made a personal offering of her sufferings to the two Divine attributes of Love and Justice, and by April, 1934, she was permanently confined to her bed. It was in 1943 that Valtorta began to write down in her notebooks the “dictations,” the mystical visions and messages she reported receiving from Jesus and Mary, and the years between 1943 and 1947 were the period of her greatest output. She wrote almost 15000 pages of dictation, a little less than two-thirds of which comprised The Poem of the Man-God, a substantial work on the life of Jesus Christ beginning from the birth of Our Lady and ending at her Assumption. Maria Valtorta died on October 12, 1961. In 1973 her remains were moved to Florence and entombed in the Capitular Chapel in the Grand Cloister of the Basilica of the Most Holy Annunciation in Florence.
