These inspired "lessons" (1946-1947) take as their starting point fifty-eight Masses found in the Roman Missal of the Catholic Church which reflect the liturgy prior to the reforms introduced in the wake of the Second Vatican Council. In view of the genesis of the commentaries, Maria Valtorta initially termed this work Angelical Masses, adding the subtitle Directions. The first Italian edition (1972), however, adopted the name of her guardian angel, "Azariah," with its biblical precedent,' as the title for these meditations. For the present English-language version of the complete original the publisher has chosen to indicate after the title of each Mass the scriptural passages corresponding to that day's liturgy and include the text of the various prayers contained therein.2 Scriptural references identifying the sources of biblical quotations or clarifying allusions in the commentaries have been placed in the margins. The Gospel passages forming part of these Masses, as Azariah himself explains, have not been commented upon since the Gospel has been broadly dealt with in the monumental life of Christ which Maria Valtorta was inspired to write.3 The Book of Azariah translates the ecstatic flame of heavenly love into human language with an intensity and fervor fully confirming its angelic origin. It resounds with limitless adoration of the Holy Trinity. The book is pervasively "Catholic," or universal, inasmuch as it unceasingly affirms and illuminates the mystical reality of the one Church founded by Christ-in its institutional, sacramental, and doctrinal concreteness-as the authentic embodiment of the Gospel legacy on earth and unfailing channel of supernatural grace for the whole of humanity. It offers abundant inspiration to those praying and laboring for the visible return of all Christians to their primordial unity in the Holy Spirit-with one Shepherd and one flock. As with all of Maria Valtorta's writings, the themes of continuous prayer and the generous offering of suffering, as well as the spiritual importance of intimate identification with the Person of Christ and his Sacrifice, are paramount in this book. Ample instruction is devoted to humility, unreserved forgiveness of one's "enemies," and loving intercession on behalf of others as so many keys to reaching and possessing union with God. Other typically "Valtortian" notes are profound, creative awareness of God's Fatherhood and the unboundedly joyous, vigorous, and liberating discovery of what it means to be his "children." Above all, The Book of Azariah is mystical speech-that is, the inspired articulation of God's Being-in-Love with man and man's being-in-Love with God-as mediated, in this instance, by an angel, and a guardian angel at that: the privileged witness to and participant in the enamored exchanges between Spirit and spirit, Divine Persons and human person. In this burning language of mystical dialogue, words are brands which both wound and heal, revealing God to be at once supremely powerful and supremely tender, the consummate Romantic of eternal poetry. The Book of Azariah has thus been written for true "lovers," present and future, and it is to be hoped that it will find its way into their hands-and into their hearts. Rome, Easter 1993 David G. I had learnt the night prayer to Jesus, Mary and Joseph for assistance ‘in my last agony’ when at school aged eight. In later life I had developed the habit of asking St Joseph’s help with practical matters such as problems with the car or computer. It was a reference to St Joseph during an Advent retreat in December 2016 that prompted me to explore his life and mission in more detail. The retreat master mentioned two things about St Joseph which intrigued me: within the Holy Family Joseph held ‘a primacy of authority’ while Mary held ‘a primacy of love’1 and secondly that a recent mystic had experienced inner locutions from St Joseph indicating that he had been sanctified in the womb. A search of the Internet on Sister Ephrem Neuzil confirmed that St Joseph had reportedly said to her that he had been freed from original sin soon after his conception.

  • Maria Valtorta Was Born in Caserta, Italy on March 14, 1897
    In Response to Various Questions Regarding “The Poem of the Man-God" Published on April 15, 2006 by Dr. Mark Miravalle, Professor of theology and Mariology at Franciscan University of Steubenville. [Note: The Poem of the Man God has since been published under the title The Gospel as Revealed to Me, but they are the same book.] Maria Valtorta was born in Caserta, Italy on March 14, 1897. Deeply pious, Maria was strongly attracted to God from early childhood, but it was as a young woman that she started reporting mystical experiences. In 1920 she was randomly attacked by a young man who hit her in the back with an iron bar. Badly injured, she was bedridden for three months and her health began its gradual decline. In the years to follow she made a personal offering of her sufferings to the two Divine attributes of Love and Justice, and by April, 1934, she was permanently confined to her bed. It was in 1943 that Valtorta began to write down in her notebooks the “dictations,” the mystical visions and messages she reported receiving from Jesus and Mary, and the years between 1943 and 1947 were the period of her greatest output. She wrote almost 15000 pages of dictation, a little less than two-thirds of which comprised The Poem of the Man-God, a substantial work on the life of Jesus Christ beginning from the birth of Our Lady and ending at her Assumption. Maria Valtorta died on October 12, 1961. In 1973 her remains were moved to Florence and entombed in the Capitular Chapel in the Grand Cloister of the Basilica of the Most Holy Annunciation in Florence.

Among the apostles is, of course, counted Paul but the object of this study \vil1 be restricted to the Twelve, focusing in particular on the composition and significance of the group after the death of Judas. We shall be asking ques- tions ~iboutthe theological validity of the Twelve and seeking to establish whether, as the narrator, Luke intended his audience to approve of their deci- sion tci replace Judas or whether, on the contrary, he meant to express some criticism of their action. We have used mathematical and statistical tools developed for specifically studying deep linguistic aspects of texts. The general trend indicates that the literary works explicitly attributable to Maria Valtorta differ significantly from her other literary works, that she claims are attributable to the alleged characters Jesus and Mary. Mathematically, they seem to have been written by different authors. The comparison with the Italian literature is very striking. A single author, namely Maria Valtorta, seems to be able to write texts so diverse to cover the entire mathematical range (suitable defined) of the Italian literature of seven centuries. I just want to see if there is any global similarity, and if so, should it be so profound, among what Jesus was for St. Francis and what Maria Valtorta urges to be each reader toward Jesus, with her writings. Let us then try to understand “that” Jesus of Saint Francis.
