Ledaig Dùsgadh 42 YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky

1 x 700ml, donated by Distell

This extraordinary and unique whisky is the oldest Ledaig bottled since the distillery reopened in 1972. Dùsgadh means ‘Awakening’ in Gaelic and it shares its birth with the first Ledaig distilled in 1972, making it the most significant whisky they created. However, this is only the beginning of Dùsgadh’s story. Distilled with peated barley, the inaugural run was laid to rest in hogsheads and butts in their warehouse on the Isle of Mull. This cherished liquid was then masterfully transferred into Olorosso sherry casks where for 14 years it blossomed to become the glorious Ledaig. Only 500 bottles were produced.

Included in the box is a handcrafted copper memento cut from the now retired spirit stills that produced this original liquid. In 2024, it entitles the bearer to inherit a bottle of the last ever Ledaig (Ledaig Déanta) distilled in them, a personal reminder of their fabulous legacy.

Tasting Notes: Colour: Chestnut Nose: Rich and complex, intense phenolic sherry aromas. Sooty smokiness, fragrant wood, toffee apple, briny with some sweet biscuit maltiness. Palate: Quite dry evolving to a rich smoky oloroso sherry character. Massive complex layers of dark chocolate, coffee and cherry liqueurs. Extremely smooth, well balanced with spicy ginger and black peppercorn overtones. Finish: Dry, smooth and spicy, satisfying and very long with a salty smoky tail.

The Aristargos is their Chenin Blanc based white blend, with 2018 being it’s 9th release, it truly expresses the reason why they love white blends. This wine remains old vine focused, but they also include grapes from younger plantings.

Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Pinot Noir 2014 Jeroboam

1 x 5L, donated by Newton Johnson Family Vineyards

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley has seen an explosion of quality Pinot Noir over the last decade. The focus at Newton Johnson Family Vineyards is ever more on perfecting techniques in the vineyard and cellar that resonate the best of their conditions. Dave's enthusiasm for wine and Pinot Noir in particular, has been passed on to and eagerly adopted by his sons, Bevan and Gordon. They have taken this family cellar and vineyards to new heights in exploring the nuances of this grape and their vineyards.

The ‘Family Vineyards’ Pinot Noir is the embodiment of their most definitive and consistent vineyard sites on the estate.

Platter’s: 5* (2016): Uniquely remarkable record of five-star ratings – it’s never failed. Low yields in 2014 meant all the fruit from the farm’s top three sites were combined here, with no single vineyard bottlings. As always, a triumph of subtle insistence; pure fruit integrated with succulent acidity, understated tannins & sensitive oaking in an elegant composition. Its power belies its demure demeanor.

Château Mouton Rothschild 2016 signed by William Kentridge

1 x 750ml, donated by Michael Fridjhon

NOTE: A personalised message can be added at the buyer’s request to the bottle by William Kentridge. This item will only be shipped after the Charity Auction.

In the nexus between art and wine, the artist label series of Mouton Rothschild stands comfortably at the apex. The concept was launched by the late Baron Philippe back in 1924 – when it was well ahead of its time – with the commission to Jean Carlu to produce the label for the first vintage bottled entirely at the chateau. The market did not embrace the idea. It was only in 1945 that Philippe de Rothschild returned to it, dressing the Victory vintage with a label designed by Philippe Jullian.

Every year since then Mouton Rothschild has had a different label. On a few rare occasions the vintage has been marked by something other than a label designed by a famous living artist – for example, in 1953, to celebrate the centenary of Rothschild ownership and again in 2003 for the 150th anniversary, in 1973, with homage to Picasso and in 2000, where the millennium vintage appeared in an engraved bottle depicting the Augsburg Ram.

Unavoidably, there is no connection at all between the fame of the artist and the quality of the vintage: the artists are engaged long before the grapes have ripened on the vines.

It is a matter of great good fortune that the work of William Kentridge, the first South African artist to be invited to produce a label for Mouton Rothschild, adorns the legendary 2016 vintage. Critics everywhere have hailed the 2016 Mouton as the wine of the vintage, with most international commentators scoring it 100 points on release. With the exception of Château Latour, none of the other First Growths are vaguely close in terms of ranking. This perfect symbiosis, a great Mouton bearing a striking work of art - the iconic Kentridge silhouette images of the Triumphs of Bacchus procession - is pretty much a first since Baron Philippe first hit upon the idea almost a century ago.

The Label: William Kentridge is the first internationally renowned artist from the African continent to illustrate a Mouton label. Exhibiting in the world’s leading galleries and the winner of prestigious prizes, he asserts a “political art” that is nevertheless open to both humour and poetry.

In Kentridge’s work for Mouton, The Triumphs of Bacchus, the silhouettes he assembles in a joyful procession are inspired by Bacchic characters from the paintings of great masters from Titian to Matisse, underlining the truth that a great wine, although first and foremost a pleasure, is also inseparable from a cultural tradition which demands respect and moderation – not least Château Mouton Rothschild 2016!

Cheval Blanc St Emilion 1971

1 x 730ml, donated by Libertas Vineyards & Estates Tabernacle

Chateau Cheval Blanc is unique - not just amongst the top properties of St Emilion, but amongst the handful of top growths of Bordeaux.

It lies at the limit of the appellation, next to Chateau Petrus, the undisputed top growth of Pomerol, with which its shares exactly the same crasse de fer iron rich soil, alongside its own gravelly alluvial “dirt.” As a result, its plantings are wholly different from any other Right Bank property: mainly Cabernet franc, followed by Merlot, then small parcels of Cabernet sauvignon and Malbec.

Rare, even in generous vintages, Cheval Blanc is a wine to cherish and treasure.
