LAST OF THE BLUE LIONS: THE 1938 BRITISH LIONS TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA SportsBooks Ltd. Paperback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, Last of the Blue Lions: The 1938 British Lions Tour of South Africa, Steve Lewis, In 1938 the British Lions visited South Africa to take on the team generally recognised as the best in the world and led by legendary scrum-half Danie Craven for the three match series. The task awaiting the Lions was huge and to their eternal credit they recovered aer losing the first two Tests to secure victory in the third, a match recognised at the time as the finest played in South Africa. Seventy years may have passed but the names of Craven, Gerry Brand, Fred Turner, Flappie Lochner, Tony Harris, the brothers 'Boy' and 'Fanie' Louw, Ferdie Bergh and Jan Lotz are still revered in South African rugby circles. And the Lions? Under strength due to the absence of several leading players unable to aord the luxury of six months overseas travel the party still included players of the calibre of Vivian Jenkins, Charles Grieve, Bill Clement and Harry McKibbin - both destined for high office with their respective unions - Haydn Tanner, Bunner Travers, George Dancer, Bob Alexander and the enigma that was Blair Mayne, who won four DSOs, the Croix de Guerre and the Legion d' honneur in the Second World War which followed the tour. Memorable as events on the playing field may have been the 1938 tourists saw much which helps make their story one of the most interesting in the long history of Lions' rugby. The extended journeys by sea and the thousands of miles by train which took the visitors the length and breadth of the country make touring in the twenty first century seem nothing more than a brief interlude - all subsequent tours to South Africa would involve the... In South Africa, the tour was expected to reopen the doors to international competition for the Springboks after an anti-apartheid sporting boycott had forced the sport into relative isolation during the 1970s. In the face of much international condemnation, the Springboks toured to New Zealand and the USA in 1981 where they encountered large and often violent demonstrations as those who opposed the tour attempted to scuttle it.

  • At Stellenbosch University
A HISTORY OF “KOSHUISRUGBY” AT STELLENBOSCH Isabelle E. Huys Thesis presented for the degree of Master of Sport Science at Stellenbosch University Study leader: Prof. F.J.G. van der Merwe March 2008 Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za DECLARATION I, the undersigned, hereby declare that the work contained in this thesis is my own original work and that I have not previously in its entirety or in part submitted it at any university for a degree. ……………………. ………………… Signature Date I Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za ABSTRACT The Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club is the largest club in the world and the men’s residence rugby competition is a component of that Club. The purpose of this study was to document the origin, formation and activities of men’s residence rugby (koshuisrugby) at Stellenbosch University. The history of the University, the history of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club and a little of the history of rugby in South Africa, and particularly at Stellenbosch, are given as background information in the introduction to provide a global view. The nucleus of this study concerns the development of koshuisrugby at Stellenbosch University. An attempt has been made to reconstruct all gathered information as accurately and as thoroughly as possible. Although there is much popular writing on sport in South Africa, the supply of scientific information is minimal. Studies such as these are thus hampered by the unavailability of primary sports history information. As this study is sport-historically orientated, the historic-scientific method has been implemented. Preference has been given to primary sources of information.

THE S.A. • Different Perspectives in Researching Genealogy by Abrie De Swardt - Chairman of the Southern Cape Branch of the Genealogical Society of South Africa
Different perspectives in researching Genealogy by Abrie de Swardt - Chairman of the Southern Cape Branch of the Genealogical Society of South Africa. Introduction. The family research enthusiast can follow various approaches , when they delve into family history. Some use a story line, for example the story of a ring, inherited by the latest in the line of daughters. She has the same names as the original ancestor, coming from the early 1800's of the previous millennium. A second approach may have history as departing point like the family-history of genl Jan Smuts, born in Riebeek-West in the Western Cape, to eventually become Chancellor of Cambridge, Prime Minister of South Africa, and member of the British War Cabinet during both the first and second World Wars(1914-1919) and (1939-45). It can also be looked at from a political perspective, for instance the relationship between the Smuts and Malan-families, both from Riebeek-West in the Western Cape, both becoming Prime Ministers of South-Africa. The location and family connection is a third possibility. Prof. Christiaan Neethling Barnard, famous doctor and professor from Groote Schuur Hospital, and the University of Cape Town, fitted into the genealogy of the de Swardt-family from Gwayang, George. In the fourth instance, it may have a church related bearing, for example the role that the de Swardt- family played in the Dutch Reformed Church in George from its establishment in 1813. Guillaume de Swardt (53 years) and his wife, Anna Sophia Weyers (39 years) were the first persons to be adopted in the church on 30 April 1813.

  • Narrating the Springbok Tour
(Re)Presenting 1981: Narrating the Springbok Tour by Sebastian JS Potgieter University of Otago School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science June 2020 A Doctoral Thesis Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Otago (Re)Presenting 1981: Narrating the Springbok Tour Abstract The extent to which historians impose themselves on the past through their narratives remains contentious. While historians of sport have engaged these debates (e.g. Phillips, 2002; Nathan, 2003; Booth, 2005; Liberti and Smith, 2015), most continue to assume a realist correspondence between historical narratives and the past. In this thesis, I draw on Alun Munslow’s ‘deconstructive consciousness’ to analyse competing popular and academic narrative representations of the 1981 Springbok rugby tour of New Zealand between 1981 and 2019. In order to practically deconstruct these texts, I draw on Hayden White’s Model of Narrative Explanation, which focusses on the form of historical narratives and directs attention to their tropes, emplotments, arguments and ideologies. In applying White’s model, I demonstrate the literary dimensions embedded in all historical texts. Furthermore, I argue that historians are ideologically embedded in the present and project this back onto the past. As a result, changing material contexts means that our representations of the past are never static and always shifting. I map how representations of the 1981 tour have changed across three distinct epochs – 1981 – 1986; 1987 – 1994; 1995 – 2019. In deconstructing these representations of the 1981 tour, I demonstrate that history is both an empirical-analytic and narrative-linguistic discipline.
